They have now limited the roadside assistance calls to 4 or 5 per year, depending on your membership level.
Never heard that they did. Good. Its the right thing to do. Like I say we have RV Plus so I never heard they were limiting. will read fine print. Do you know when this took effect?

Should never get beyond 4 or 5 per year. If it does a person is either driving a clunker or never plugs the car in or services anything. Last time I called AMA was about 7yrs ago. I feel like its silly to have the membership but kind of consider it paying dues for something that is a good initiative for people. its a good service to have in any community and in winter climates can be matter of life and death.

Remember the rule peeps. if theres a tow truck anywhere slow down, slow down. lol just heard the slow down advisory on the radio for tow trucks (lots of em out there on roads right now. Especially during Xmas season important to remember to get there, not when you will get there. People often in a rush and the roads are not conducive.

Not sure when changed, but I think it’s been this way for a few years now anyhow.

Bringing back childhood memories for all the wrong reasons. Decided to go out and refill my bird feeding station then also decided to start the truck and shovel off the garage pad to get it mostly cleared. Of course at a couple points i have to take my mitten off and stay out too long thus my one hand and toes got frozen cold.

I get back into the house and the pain of thawing of really cold body parts brings back memories of frozen feet playing hockey on outdoor rinks years ago. If I recall our shut off limit for games was below -15 F (-26 C).

10 year old kids playing hockey on outdoor rinks for an hour at -25C. lol

I recall playing a game at the rink that used to be around where the folk fest takes place in a blizzard and all the snow from down town was being blown down into the rink area. We cleaned the ice after each period with the good old huge metal scrappers. But after about 2 minutes there was 6 inches of snow on the rink again.

I recall finding the puck in the snow and having a break away from my own blue line, i shot the puck between the goalies legs but there was so much snow it stopped before it crossed the goal line. I had to skate around the goalie to slap it in.

Sounds downright tropical. We’re up for one more cold night (-36 with a -47 windchill) and then It starts to move into high teens/20 by Boxing Day. Daughter #2 just drove in fromFort Sask today and said at 6am there it was -41, almost 10 degrees colder than Edmonton or Sherwood Park. How is that even possible?

The amount of heat large cities put out is real. out lying areas and smaller centers will often be colder but it is amazing once it gets to like 5 degrees colder.

I love Alberta. Truck wouldn't turn over after getting gas, within a minute I had someone offering me a boost.
Highly recommend one of these. A self booster pack, you just connect the cables, plug them into the pack, and then turn it on, and voila. My daughter used it last night with no one else around to help her and it took 30 seconds to hook up and away she went. Device uses a USB charger to recharge it, but they say you can get about 20 boosts out of one charge. But note, you cannot keep it in the vehicle obviously, or it may be the one freezing up.:D We are going to have one at the office permanently in case someone needs it, but you they are small enough you can put them in your jacket.

Warmer temps are great, but I'm terrified of freezing rain.

These are awesome and saved my ass many times over the years. I have the 1000amp gb40 and it worked great for any car, suv and cargo van I've tried it on. If I did it again I'd get gb45 1250amp or a little higher just in case, but Im not a truck guy so dunno how high one needs to go. Haven't risked more than 5 boosts without charging but it seemed still full of juice. Like you said, will freeze if left too long in grotesque temps, so I bring in at night and take into work. :thumbu:

I've actually kept mine in my vehicle for years, and never have had an issue when I've wanted to use it. Mind you my vehicle is parked inside at night, so that helps. But it's fine being outside during the daytime at work, etc. Always have one (Microstart XP10, really tiny) in my packpack inthe summer when we are on the boat. Has come in handy numerous times. At the drivein I should have charged people for all the boosting we did after all the batteries were drained at the end of the shows. ;)

Drive in rookies. Most people start the car once in awhile and in between movies and especially in the winter. heh Never drained my battery at a drive in. Radio should be able to work several hours on a charge anyhoo. not that much of a draw.

The Drive in operator also had a portable charger that they used every evening, walking around for half an hour after the show. I would say a minimum of 10 vehicles needed a boost each time we were there. The newer vehicles have all kinds of bells and whistles that drain your battery when in accessory mode, and if you don't run it between shows, and the kids are leaving lights on all over the place, and your battery is a few years old, its not a shock to see a bunch of hoods up after each show. It was always fun giving people a boost, as I literally took my booster out of my pocket, hooked it up in seconds, and asked them to turn their ignition. Have had so many 'WTF just happened' looks over the years. it's always entertaining.

Ditto moi on this. I seem to recall the threshold for not playing when I was a kid was if it was colder than -10F , which is the equivalent to about -23C. Thats f'ing cold. If I hadn't lived it I wouldn't believe.
Yup, those times in the shack , crying, whining as our feet unfroze after the game. Ouch.
Unbelievable in retrospect.
Other memories are when we played in what was then the north end, parents pelting us with snowballs (we were like 10, or 11).
That was something

God I miss going to drive ins. My high school years, we lived at the drive in every Friday and Saturday night, from May to September. Luckily one of the guys in our high school, his dad owned the theatre and drive in, so he kind of turned a blind eye to the party that was full on every night. I owned a 1970 Chev truck, used to back into a stall, 2 lawn chairs and a cooler of beer in between. Everyone walking around, visiting, going from spot to spot. Good, nah, great times!

edit - and I wish I never sold that truck, but youth ya know, I needed the cash to buy another vehicle that was more reliable at the time to go to university.

Used to go to drive ins year round. Both summer and winter had their particular charm. Winter drive ins were better for snuggling with the opposite sex. Kind of a romance to going out in the winter elements at a drive in and some of the best memories. Seemed like the blockbusters would come out then too in drive ins because movies would first hit theaters in say summer and by the time most in demand hit drive ins it would be off peak season. So we saw Slapshot, Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Animal House etc all at Drive Ins first, usually in winter. Multiple drive ins that were open in winter also had the portable car interior heaters. The ones that had the physical speakers you'd attach to window also often had the car heaters.

I've talked about this during the pandemic but the Drive in mode was superior, and of course would be these past several years. In winter climates as well you can still see latest movies on big screen without exposing yourself to all the latest plagues out there in winter.

What I don't understand is how modes like the Drive IN, become all or nothing. Here today, gone tomorrow. So that a city of 1.4M people now has zero drive ins when the city(greater area) had as many as 8-10 of them. people still drive cars and love their vehicles, people still watch movies. Why does the mode have to just disappear? There was enough demand to have several drive ins and the demand was STILL THERE. For instance Millwoods Drive in regularly did good business. It was still popular. Yeah I realize the land could have more value in the city but people would go far out to places like Parkland drive in and willing to go to outlying areas where land prices could still suit a drive in theater.

Lots of pop up drive ins came about during the pandemic as a means of giving people something to do. Like you said, permanent or pop, they were very effective at giving people a safe venue to still have some social interaction and they introduced whole new generations to a fun way to watch Hollywood. But I think you nailed the demise of drive ins, because as suburbia grew, the land these developments sat on was more valued for Costco, and 3 car garages. That coupled with the proliferation of many other ways to be entertained in a digital age has sunk many of these. The Okanagan Valley still has a number that operate through the summer i beleive. Don’t see many in other jurisdictions sadly.

Yeah the popups is pretty strictly kids fare movies. Few and far between and while the graphics is higher resolution the screens are small. Went to a couple any that were either cars or bring your lawn chairs. Unfortunately some of the car ones occur on the ambience of mall parking lots. heh

Yeah I mentioned the land costs. But not all land is suitable for real estate or development. For instance former dump sites (which many of our big parks are) would not be able to be used for any other reasons but parks. These are also better places for drivein pops than some of the places they put these in.

In the U.S, they'd probably fire a bullet through the back window to clear it.

So, basically head towards the north pole and you should be good.
It’s apparently quite nice in parts of NS right now, at plus 11, and minus 50 in the NWT. Only a 61 degree flip. And what’s with Manitoba on the map you posted, they just closed for the winter and not reporting their weather? ;)
