The coldest I have ever been was in cool, damp climates. One year left Edmonton in June when it was 30 above, and landed in jolly old England and they were going through a cold spot. 10 degrees and damp. I had to have a hot bath 3 times a day just to stop shivering. The other time was January at Niagara Falls. Same type of weather then - cool and damp, and I almost died. There really is something to be said for a dry cold.
We climbed Ben Nevis in Late September and it started snowing at summit and raining all over everywhere else. Because we were less familiar with that trail (there is no real trail just boulders and sheep) we ended up having to hike all the way back to Fort William having taken a wrong turn as we missed the trait directly back to where bus ran. Rained the entre way to Fort William. I think it was from summit 10-12miles walk. So cold. Warmed up in our lodging and then went to chinese food buffet and ate everything in sight. I developed a cold at the time too so it wasn't a lot of fun. Lot of the Scotland weather is pretty bleak.

The whole way back nobody picked us up We even had Canadian signs on packs indicating we were tourists. Could have got hypothermia and nobody even willing to stop and give some poor hikers a ride back into town. We were obviously hikers. If that happened in Jasper or Banff people would stop if it was pouring rain. Or even other times. 7miles on a paved road to Fort William and no passers by would even stop. Even a couple busses passed us without stopping.

The reason no one picked you up is likely because some nutcase with a bowling bag had been hitchhiking earlier and a bunch of people went missing.:D

heh

I didn't comprehend it at the time but UK has an odd and differential view of tourists and tourism. In the big tourist oriented cities and spaces tourists are seen as a necessary evil that contribute something to the economy. In smaller towns and less visited spots tourists are seen as a general annoyance. The collective opinion in a lot of sleepy places is "Can't wait for the tourists to fly south" We had heard that the farther north you get the friendlier it gets. This seems not to be the case.

We like rural areas though and seeing a mix of places. But you don't get a lot of welcome in some of those places. Got to see Glen Coe area as well as much of the highlands and lochs and Isle of Skye. Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness as well. Lots of gray granite buildings and grey sky.

Windy AF today... even the water is moving in the toilet bowl... so you know that's a pretty windy day. :)

Not sure how accurate this is.. but apparently wind gusts up to 177 km/h at one Aberta location today...

Lat.: 52°24'N / Lon.: 116°30'W / Altitude: 1917 m

Looking around a bit more... that 177 km/h on the site above is likely accurate because I found this:

Gusts to 166 km/hr

Must be setting some new records with those readings.

Stay safe out there... take care when driving people.

Lots of weather out there happening.. Thats about as astute as the weather forecasts we tend to get.

No sort of coming in mild I guess. Non stop blizzard for days. What was supposed to be a sprinkking of snow, maybe a few hours instead is continuous snow fall. Started yesterday at 3 and hasn't stopped.

Good thing this storm didn't happen one day before or it would've put a damper on Halloween. Kids really got lucky with the weather on Monday. Tuesday and today have been decidedly different.

just did walks and driveways of ours and neighbors. Lets just say this is the worst possible snow. The stuff that sticks to the ground so you can't push it. The stuff that sticks to shovel so you can't throw it. Every shovel full you have to bang the shovel off. Its miserable crap when it snows around 0C. I'd prefer colder, and powder. This is packing into some fine ice slicks on the roadways right in time for first snowstorm of the year people forgot to drive...

People just trucking on like its regular road conditions. Drive home looks to be bad news. Even people walking having a hell of a time as like 5lbs of snow starts sticking to your boots. This is the one kind of snow I don't like.

Ah the perfect weather to head up to Peace river lmfao
That can't be any fun. Stay safe out there. This relative to the amount of people that can't drive, can't stay in lane, and don't heed road conditions at all.

Haha, thanks for posting this. I had no idea this snow was coming and was wondering if I just had my head in the sand.

Not even close to making it to work on time this morning.

Yah, I read that we were supposed to get some of the white stuff, but more in the 1 mm or so range. They only missed that forecast by about 8 inches, lol.

But as you said, nice that it was good for Hallowe'en. But we really are in winter mode now for good, this stuff is here to stay. And next week will really hammer that home to everyone.

AS per usual they absolutely botched the forecast. They called for milimeters, then maybe a few Centimeters. So far we have several inches of pack wet snow. The wet stuff compacts so its a greater snow fall then say 8inches of powder would be in terms of precipitation.

All the advances in tech and meteorology and forecasts are still a joke. Seemingly looking outside is as valid. yesterday I was still getting forecasts of possible snow in the Edmonton area and it had already been snowing for hours. In a winter city in which snow can wreak such havoc shouldn't we have better forecasting,, more vigilant, and predictive?

Apparently the Report an accident Collision centers are packed. (I didn't even know they started these but apparently its just up and running this year. ) Apparently when possible you leave site of accident and just go to the collision reporting centers? This is one of the most closely kept secrets and hasn't even been on the news as far as I've seen. But people are finding out today...

So gone are the days when police spend 6hrs at a scene measuing every aspect of traffic accidents. Now people are being requested to take a few photos, leave scene if possible for "non major" situations and just report to a collision center. But I guess we're in no fault or all fault accident territory anyway now. Sucks. I do everthing possible to avoid driving on the first clusterf*** snow fall of the season. Tons of accidents. I saw a truck speeding down my front street today. What a time for that...

My story like this is the opposite, I left Edmonton in December a number of years back and it was -25 and windy as hell. I arrived in Australia and it was plus 41.

Back to the time of year where living in Edmonton is the worst experience in the nhl. If I didn’t live here in the summer too (only good time to be in Edmonton) I’d be planning my immediate exit.

I don't mind winter most of the time but if all winter were sticky heavy snow conditions then I would feel that way. Conversely I love powder. I suspect everybody does. This current shit is good for getting absolutely everything wet. Have to have multiple sets of gloves and toques when its like this.

The type of snow is a big factor, but the cold/lack of options makes it extra bad. Gotta love the 4 walls in your house except for when you can get out to the mountains on an occasional weekend. But then the knee injuries with skiing say hello. Born and raised here, but for the first time in my life I can’t stand the city lol I know some people move here for that, but I’m starting to plan for a move to the states. The forest fire smoke induced lung cancers that will start popping up is the other major push

Good call on the gloves/toque tho. Gotta have extra socks when it’s like this too.

Id take Edmonton winters over Winnipeg, plus there is an airport to fly to warmer destinations.

Ah, winter is finally here. Called in sick, as I always do on the first day of real winter
Because it seems every year the road idiots are in full force particularly on the first day of heavy snowfall. Either they're oblivious to the ice on the road and continue to tail gate you like it's July, and end up rear ending someone, or they're too scared of the road and drive 15km/h, on a single lane road, holding up traffic and causing road rage

btw, if you're planning to switch to winter tires, all the mainstream places like Kal Tire, Canadian Tire, etc are already booked up the whole month. Probably have to find a non mainstream private auto shop. After calling around and having no luck booking a tire change until December, I called a local auto shop 10 blocks from me, and they had availability tomorrow

Good luck ya'll, stay safe

I always get like this in the winter. I don't get agitated staying indoors for long periods, but I like golfing a lot too. I don't snowboard or ski. I will take the family down to Kananaskis or somewhere every winter to a nice place. Might visit Vancouver for a week too. It's not hot there either, but usually no snow.

I still haven't built my simulator yet. I need that in the winter. Born and raised here, but I HATE snow lol. Especially days like today. Need to upgrade the snow blower.

I am going to 100% start going somewhere for at least 1-2 months during the winter when my kids are older.

Not the best selling point lol “live here so you can fly somewhere else”

If you like the winter cabin or snowboarding/skiing, there is draws. But just compare the night life to La, Miami, New York, hell even Dallas or Montreal or Toronto. Does not compare.

You said Edmonton is the worst winter experience in the league. Winnipeg is much worse...

Winnipeg not having an airport is a long running joke around here.

I realize other places have nicer winter experiences, thanks for the reminder lol
