What they are looking at is who is number 13-15 and if they can get a guy who can force someone out of the lineup so they have a trusted resource ready for the inevitable injuries or matchup need. Malgin looks like 13, who is really a trusted guy for 14 or 15? Right now its Meyers or Foudy probably in that spot and I doubt they are good with that. You can get a Cogliano type player to take that spot for a low pick, that's the type of move I'm guessing they make. Or maybe they give up on a guy in Loveland like Ranta for a better 3rd liner and move LOC down to the 4th leaving Nieto in the 13th spot which I think they would be very comfortable with. Same thing with a D, its really about being #7 now with Hunt likely dropping to #8 if they make a move. Then add in the complexity of making the cap work in all this.So this is what the forward group looks like when healthy:
Landeskog - MacK - Nichushkin
Lehkonen - Compher - Rantanen
Rodrigues - Newhook - LOC
Cogliano- Helm - Nieto/malgin
This is the roster you have to think about, because nodoby is out for the season yet. Imo the bolded areas are where you can improve. Everywhere else is set.
I wonder if they look at moving LOC if they bring in a forward. He’s kind of in an awkward spot. Not good enough to be a 3rd liner and the Avs are set with their 4th line.
If they get an O’Reilly, or Monahan type, you’d think Newhook, or Compher simply slides over to the wing.
Not that I don't want to see a 2C come in, I just don't see a desperate move for one making sense. The guys out there mentioned in their current state aren't that much better than JTC when you consider the demand for a two-way game for playoff success. Hayes can put up more points for example, but is he going to keep the puck out of his own net that well put in that spot?
