Even though I was Team Wright, I was very concerned about the lack of urgency in his game and many scouts were too. Clearly. Once considered a generational talent, got passed by 3 NHL teams. 2 of which has a glaring hole at Center needing to be filled.

What scares me is that Wright turns it around, becomes that 90pt player and and Slaf is just your average 50-pt power forward. That’s still a decent outcome, but it’s not 1st OVR outcome and it’s not going to win us a Stanley Cup.

The organization better be committed to The Dishonor for Conor, because we still have a glaring hole at Center. Unless they genuinely love Riley Kidney’s upside and see him behind Suzuki in the future…
Edit: Or Dach finally lives up to his potential.

I was a Wright supporter, but if I’m being honest, the fact that two other clubs passed on him helps soften the blow quite a bit.

I’ve been intrigued about Slafkovsky for quite awhile now. I like the player, I really do. I just always maintained Wright was more of a sure thing. Slaf is a BIG gamble at 1. Boom or bust. But boy if he pans out….

Just shut up man lol don’t make a fool of yourself

Why, it is the truth that team don’t have the time to implement a good system in tournament because players does not have a lot of time to mesh together. There is a basis to it but the play is definitively more open in tournaments like the World and the Olympics.

I feel like Slaf would thrive on that because of his strength.

I also feel like he looks worst the tighter checking is because he really does not know how to get open. My worries with Slaf have never been the toolbox. It’s the IQ. He is a mess defensively and I feel like offensively, when the puck is not on his stick he really does not seem to know where to go.

Add to that the fact that while he is a big player, he is not overly physical. Makes me really worried about that pick. It is just an opinion and honestly I really hope I am wrong.

I’ve just not seen it from Slaf yet and the razzle dazzle and the size of a player as never been things to impress me that much. I’m more about effectiveness and Slaf has not proven to be an effective player yet.

Wright’s “decline” coincides with the Covid lockdown. It’s a different situation. I think it could end up being a huge miss.

Again, we’ll see…
On top of this Europeans didn't have lockdowns so their development and stats were unhindered, thus making them appear better than they may actually be. It could be that Slaf and Mesar wouldn't have gone top 10/first round if there hadn't been COVID.

Well, we have to cheer for the guy, now, don't we?

Should be easy, he's got a great personality and looks like a great kid.

I'm not going to do a 180 and pretend this pick isn't making me nervous. It is. I see it as a HUGE risk for the organization. The floor is pretty darn low and it could backfire in a bad way.

That being said, there are also questions to be raised about the involvement of a guy like Wright, who took the COVID year off to pursue guitar lessons instead of perfecting his skills.

We'll see...

Slaf’s upside is actually much higher than Wright’s. But the probability of reaching that potential as an impact player is much lower than Wright.

Massive gamble, but if it works out we just drafted the best player in the draft.

Seems to be a coaching and system problem rather than a Slafkovsky problem. Get him good coaching and he will know where to be on the ice.

Remember that Liiga is quite structured and defensive, the NHL is a far more open and offensive league. So the fact you believe he thrives in that is a positive.

I'm not sure if this was answered but is Slaf going to the WJC in August? Also was there any info on Guhle going?

Exactly. Was not my choice, but all we can do now is cheer for him to reach his top potential and hope for the best.

Hearing Suzuki saying how he was so happy that Slaf was the pick and how Caufield texted him after the pick in excitement and happiness made me even more happy. The boys are excited!!

Even if he gets the best development in the world for god sake I still don't see it!!

What are his amazing skills?

no some of us would like to see a good player in our lifetime instead of a copium project, we've had those on our plate for 25 years
Suzuki is a good player,CC is a good player and it's way to premature to label this kid a bust, unless you be toting around a crystal ball or something.:dunno:

I have the exact same worries.
