Strange move for both sides. You stick with the hot hand in that situation. The Jays had one hit to that point and hit the ball hard maybe twice through 6. Seems like a case of over managing by both teams.

Really sucks if you were one of those teams low balling Semien in the offseason hoping for a 1 year, 12 million dollar deal. He's proved to be worth 40+ million this year (as absurd as that sounds). Can't believe he didn't get a better offer. Hope we can re-sign him to something like 3 years,80 million. He's a pure hardworking strong character type of guy.
I wonder if they never watched the whole thing and just saw the initial part where he wasn't touching the base?

What I gather from this is once the runner passed the bag you need to appeal to the umpire. Just touching the bag isn't enough.

That's a horsecrap semanticy excuse to not get something right. If you're looking at a play it shouldn't matter if you see something that wasn't requested to be reviewed or that there wasn't some bureaucratic order followed in terms of making a request on time. If it's wrong, it should be fixed.

I don't understand why they need to appeal. Gurriel touched the bag with the ball before the runner did during a live play. It's not like the play was over and they appealed before the next play. Does the umpire being a blind moron and calling Verdugo safe suddenly mean any attempt to put him out you have to yell at the umpire "hey he should be out".
What happens if the runner if halfway down the basepaths and the umpire spazzes out and yells safe for no reason, the regular putout would have to be accompanied by the 1st baseman telling the umpire that he's appealing? Appeals shouldn't be a thing during live play.
