I know we don't like the phrase "strikes out the side" because it doesn't require everyone in the inning to be struck out. How do we feel about Shulman just saying "retires the side", Semien hit a homerun, he wasn't retired. Does the same logic apply? Go!

No, because the side is "retired" collectively but struck out individually. Once 3 outs are recorded the offence comes off the field as a complete unit (and thus is retired), but strikeouts are an individual thing and any batter striking out has nothing to do with the other batters other than perhaps being the catalyst for the side to be retired.
