11 goals and both Caufield and Kaliyev went without having one... Caufield has now seven games in World Juniors and only one goal. Not good enough for player like him.

Austria was always going to struggle this year because their promotion was a bit suprising and most of those players was too old for this year. End of the day our team did what they needed to do. It was total domination from start to finish.

I would like to see Brisson more up in the lineup. He has more to give for this team and Leaman need to realize that too in my opinion. Berard has been one of the biggest positives so far and it is good to see. I personally felt that many teams passed him for no reason. Good for Rangers.

Zegras seems like a real captain of this team. Leading team on and off the ice.

Who knows yet if we have the horses but this is some drastic hyperbole.
Lol. Yes it is wonderful hyperbole. My post was written at the end of the first and clearly I was in an emotional state. My bad. Perhaps I should restate my thoughts.

I have many concerns about our d....almost all based on puck movement. The breakout passes rarely go tape to tape...more often than not they are in skates. The d to d passes are too often thrown recklessly and with questionable judgement. And don’t get me started on the exchanges at the offensive blue line. If I never see another of those cute little drop passes that will be too soon. My heart skips a beat every time.

We won by a zillion and I’m happy about that obviously. I hope it cleans up. Maybe it’s based on the lack of on-ice time to mesh. But I still see a lot of stuff that the Austrians didn’t jump on....but other teams will.

Can't really read much into a game that lopsided, but some of the things I liked:
  • Berard has been a buzzsaw so far. Really playing well and adds a lot of piss and vinegar to the 3rd line. We needed some unheralded guys to step up after we lost so many forwards, and Berard has risen to the challenge.
  • Faber is playing pretty well and has cemented a top 4 role going forward. He made some fantastic passes tonight.
  • Colangelo was skating really well tonight after looking overwhelmed against Russia. Definitely earned himself some more minutes.
  • Farinacci was excellent on face-offs tonight and involved in front of the net a lot. A lot of the shine wore off of him after he was injured his entire draft year, but his versatility is really key for that 3rd line.
  • Zegras and Boldy were excellent again. Zegras has been an elite player for years, but he's still improving a lot. His shot, two-way play, and physicality have improved since last season.
What I'd like to see improve:
  • Caufield is forcing it. He's trying to be too cute and precise and it's leading to him mishandling it a bit or missing the net.
  • I've liked the way Brink is showing up for the most part as he's been involved in the play quite a bit and making things happen, but his finish on plays has been letting him down. He's missing open nets, flubbing the pass after a nice move, etc. If he can clean that up, it'll go a long way to cementing some depth scoring.

Agree about Colangelo...he showed last night that he really wanted to play. If the USA wanted to shake things up a bit they might try him on the 1st line with Zegras and Turcotte. He has a Boldy-lite type of element to his game which that 1st line is missing right now. It was hard to get a read on him in the Russia game since he only played about 5 minutes...mostly in the latter stages of the 3rd period.

I don't freak out about streak scorers like Caufield and Kaliyev not filling the score sheet every game. They both have warts but both get their chances and make things happen multiple times in a game. Are they "snake-bitten"? Maybe, but I would expect that to change as the tournament goes on. If it doesn't, it doesn't mean all that much for their pro careers. What was nice to see is guys like Brink and Berard with a lot of hustle, the D activating and skating/moving the puck well (really liked Faber), and other guys like Colangelo and Brisson get on the score sheet.

Colangelo is not as good as you think, in my opinion. I still think he’s one of the bigger liabilities on the team against real competition. No way would I move him up anywhere past the fourth line.

I agree, he still looks very raw out there and like he's half a second behind. I don't want him anywhere near the top line when you have players like Berard, Moynihan (who looked pretty good alongside Zegras) or even Brink who can bring that tenacity but with significantly more pace. I do think both Zegras/Turcotte would benefit from a "grinder" (so to speak), Z probably more so, that will just create havoc on the forecheck, open up space, retrieve pucks, etc. My favorite combination is still a pairing of Zegras-Boldy.

Agree with the two prior posts (Garrity & Buchnevic). Colangelo is a guy that dominated the USHL in part because of his stacked team and also the league's overall style of play that gave Colangelo more time to do as he pleased. In the WJC against the real competition (Russia, Sweden, Finland, Canada), those teams are all aggressive and boast great forecheckers that supply constant pressure, so it will be hard for him to showcase his abilities when his game is just not at that level yet. (Against Austria, we saw his potential and talent because of the lesser competition; hence he was allowed to carry the puck more) . Seeing the same for Brisson too, I think he is definitely skilled but is struggling with the pace of the WJC where you have to make quicker decisions.

There is no point looking at last year's WJC for Caufield. The coach was a moron and Cole barely played and when he did it was with 3rd and 4th liners. He should have started this WJC on the first line but since he didn't he needs to prove he belongs there. He had good linemates Beniers & Boldy. I don't know if they fit his style but they are talented.

Again, I would be concerned if Caufield wasn't getting chances but he's creased the outside of the post and come close on a number of occasions. He was one of the few forwards attacking the offensive zone with pace in the Russian game. I would be concerned if the chances and touches weren't there, but they are. It will come.

Stop - I can only get so hard.

Caufield is the least talented hockey player of those three.

The 3rd and 4th liners on last years team were Turcotte, Zegras, and Kaiylev . So not sure that was the problem.

I'd make a few lineup changes for the next game.

Zegras-Turcotte-Caufield
Boldy-Beniers-Kaliyev
Brisson-Farinacci-Berard
Colangelo-Slaggert-Moynihan
Brink

York-Thrun
Johnson-Faber
Sanderson-Helleson
Skinner

Wolf
Knight

I'd flip Caufield and Kaliyev. Need to try to get both going. Caufield has had a lot of success playing with Zegras in the past. Kaliyev gets one more chance before I think about moving him down and elevating Brisson/Berard into his spot. I know it was changed last game, but I like York with Thrun. The next two pairs are mostly interchangeable at this juncture in what is the second and third pair, but I think those combinations make the most sense. Skinner should draw in for Kleven. I think Kleven's the weakest link in our defense, and I also think Skinner is better than he's credited for. He would've made this team in a regular role if the OHL was playing games before this tournament.

I'm giving Wolf the easier game against the Czech's. Then Knight gets the next day against Sweden. Open competition. Both gotta prove themselves. I want to see Knight against the better competition after he struggled against good competition his last game. If he does it again, I go with Wolf, regardless of how he plays against the Czech's. If he has a good performance and Wolf also does (or Wolf struggles), I'm going with Knight. But I think both gotta get another start in the next two because it should be a competition at this juncture for the starting spot.

The U.S lost to Russia by 2.
Russia lost to the Czechs by 2.

If the U.S. wants to avoid Canada and Finland in the quarters (assuming they finish 1st and 2nd in their division), the U.S. can start by beating the Czechs by MORE than 2. If they do that, the odds of finishing lower than 2nd in their division drop considerably.

What's up crew????? Sorry been MIA from these threads lately, I miss all of you!

For some reason last year I couldn't really get into the WJ's with work/commuting every day, but this year being home I am really enjoying the tournament. Have loved watching Zegras, Boldy and my guy Cam York. I think it's a well balanced team that bounced back really nicely two days ago, I can't wait for the game tomorrow!

I agree with Knight getting another crack, but I am with @Pavel Buchnevich, I would have done it for the Sweden game.

I understand the move. Put Knight in for the lower risk of the 2 games to see if he steps up. He plays shaky, go with Wolf the rest of the tourney. If Knight plays lights out, put him back in against Sweden. Knight is the better goalie if he’s playing lights out, he gives the US a chance to steal a game or two if they need. Give him the chance to win back the role. You’re also minimizing the risk this way too
