Extra incentive to watch as many ASU games as possible.
Could help with recruiting, too. They’ve got two draft picks headed there next season with Doan (2nd-ARI) and Murcheson (5th-PHI) as well as a Niedermayer. Hopefully that brings a lot of additional NHl scouting attention to the team and inspires other talented kids to commit to ASU so they can benefit from that increased attention. Could be great for the program.

This is a feel good story for sure, but man, it is one of those things that doesn't really pass the smell test lol. Draft +1 year and he was the third fiddle on a stacked line. I hope he continues to improve, and being at ASU means they'll be able to track him closely, but there were a lot of interesting players at 37. Too bad we just didn't throw a 7th at him last year.

Dont really like those types of picks but at least we had other 2nd rounders for high-end gambles like Fedotov. Even as an overager, Doan wasnt going to fall far in this poorly-scouted draft class and it would have really sucked to see Josh progressing at another organisation. Impressed by the passion he had for Arizona and the sport here, he'll be an asset as not just a player but beyond that as well, just as his dad is today. Need those good vibe stories when we're about to spend a year in the basement.

GMBA said they selected Doan because of the hockey player, not the name.

I think its a good pick. USHL is a tough league to score in. He's done nothing but improve drastically every year. He's kind of a late bloomer. I watched him a bit when he was on the Jr Coyotes teams and he never really stood out or was even the best player on the team. He's clearly putting in work and found his game. No reason he won't keep improving.

Plus, you can tell in the interview they did on the draft that he still looks extremely young, so he still looks like he's growing and will fill out his frame in college. Could end up being a very large RWer for us.

Just realized that this was with the Stepan pick from Ottawa. Nice!

Listening to the Draft Class podcast from the NHL hosted by Adam Kimmelman and Mike Morreale (this is a fantastic show and everyone here should subscribe to it - I’ve been listening to it for years, it’s a super positive and just nice thing to listen to). Anyway, they’ve got Craig Button on. He mentioned Guenther being the surprise faller in the consensus 3-8 and felt he could have gone anywhere in there (he had him 3rd in his final mock). They asked him for his top pick from day two that may really surprise people and when we look back we wonder how they weren’t a day one pick. He answered EMPHATICALLY with Josh Doan.

Damn this is exciting. Can't wait to see Shane and Josh at the new rink

Remember in the pre-draft show they asked Sam Cosentino to talk about his favorite under the radar pick and he did a whole little segment on Josh Doan as his guy. Cosentino incidentally had Guenther ranked 4th on his final list. Safe to say both Craig Button and Sam Cosentino are big fans of our first two picks. Corey Pronman didn’t like the Doan pick, but he had Guenther 2nd overall on his final list.

(Side note: Pronman hated the Hayton and Soderstrom picks)
