Lot of Vilardi discussion tonight, I mean I think there were plenty of youthful lessons that happened tonight that would happen more often on a bottom team that NEEDED to happen for guys to learn. Byfield taking a terrible line on that Donato goal, he played himself. Easy mistake to learn from, that's a rookie move. Vilardi with the dzone turnover and some soft coverage, stuff to learn from. Kupari shooting wide on the PK while Durzi makes an ill-advised pinch--I like the aggressiveness but that's a double-rookie mistake. But they don't if they don't get minutes, which is why several of us have been arguing for this all along. They'll be better for those dumbass moves.
But going back to Vilardi, yeah, he's a flawed player. He was never going to be a top end all-around guy, he was a scorer with skating concerns and there should be no real surprises there--the question isn't 'is he an NHLer,' it's 'do we have a coach/staff that care to work with that,' because I guarantee you a more creative coach is going to get 50+ points out of him using him on a top-six that can cover his weaknesses and get him on a good PP. Someone mentioned he'd go on waivers? That's laughable. He's absolutely an NHLer. Imagine someone like Carolina or TO trading for him, good lord. Sure, he's not going to be THE engine, but he's sure going to be a hammer. Be patient, especially given the lack of NHL time for many, many of these guys. Hell, the youth just did what a more veteran lineup could barely do, put up 5 goals on a team that usually gives us grief.
