ECHL Kelly Cup Finals Preview: Florida, Toledo Meet For Top Prize

When the Toledo Walleye and Florida Everblades meet Friday night in the first game of the ECHL Kelly Cup Finals, it will be a clash of similar styles.

May 31, 2022 by Mike Ashmore

The cream always rises.

That is certainly true of this year’s Kelly Cup Final, where the ECHL’s best team in the regular season, the Brabham Cup-winning Toledo Walleye, are set to host one of the league’s perennial powerhouses, the Florida Everblades. The best-of-seven-series gets underway in Ohio on Friday night, broadcast exclusively on FloHockey.

These finals mark Toledo’s second straight appearance in the Kelly Cup Final in a “traditional” regular season format—they lost to the Newfoundland Growlers in the Final back in 2019. Florida advances for the fifth time in franchise history (2004, 2005, 2012 and 2018), tied for second-most in league history.

Now a decade removed from their only championship season, the Everblades have been one of the ECHL’s best teams since their inception in 1998, missing the playoffs just once since then, in 2014.

They’ve won ten playoff rounds since then, including an increasingly dominant run this postseason. After needing only six games to beat the Greenville Swamp Rabbits in the first round, the ’Blades needed a total of nine over the next two rounds to jettison the Jacksonville Icemen and the Growlers to advance to the Final. ...

Don't let anybody tell you that ECHL hockey isn't popular. This Kelly Cup Finals wrap-up article reports otherwise. Though the notion of 1,200 extra fans cramming into Huntington Center in Toledo does give me pause ... :shakehead
Four of five games in Finals feature capacity crowds

Games 1 and 2 in Toledo and Games 4 and 5 in Florida all welcomed standing-room only crowds. There were 8,600 fans for both games in Toledo at Huntington Center (capacity 7,431). Game 3 in Florida had a crowd of 7,535 while Game 4 welcomed 7,674 fans at Hertz Arena (capacity 7,181). ...

What does the season ending rosters mean that were announced is it a good thing to be on it? It says maximum of 8 can get a qualifying offer what does for the rest?

As described (but never very succinctly) in the League press release, the ECHL's "season-ending roster" rule is simply a way for a team to extend their rights to a small collection of players into the summer. This allows extra time for the teams to flesh out their next season's roster possibilities without losing potentially key players to other League teams in the process. I reckon the feelings of the players on these lists will be mixed, depending on whether they wish to continue with their 2021-22 team or whether they want to jump to another team for 2022-23. The players not on a list are free agents, unless they are still under a rare multi-year contract (if those even exist any more in the ECHL).
