Lance Lysowski's line combos
How will the Sabres' lines look with Taylor Hall on Jack Eichel's left wing?
Taylor Hall – Jack Eichel – Sam Reinhart
Jeff Skinner – Eric Staal – Dylan Cozens
Victor Olofsson – Cody Eakin – Tage Thompson
Zemgus Girgensons – Curtis Lazar – Kyle Okposo

He gives his rationale in the article. I think Rieder will be in the lineup.

I’m concerned about how skinner-stasl will be together given how little they did in Carolina.

I’d rather flip olofsson/Skinner or Reinhart/Thomoson
Girgs could play middle 6 center and Eakin playing 4C.

Girgs and Reinhart are defensively strong they could play against other teams top line.

Skinner is stronger defensively than olofsson to play in this role.

Staal with Cozens and Olofsson could be a very strong secondary scoring line.

Thus thrn could lead to 3 strong lines in goal scoring.

Hall and Eichel can carry themselves so the RW doesn’t matter as much.

For S&G...

Would Buffalo trade for Kane? He has 3 yrs left and plays RW

The deal would be something like

Kane for Reinhart+Miller+2nd

Not trading top prospects ( Samuelson, Quinn, Peterka, UPL , Pekar)

10.5 vs 3.875+6= 9.875

It needs to be near cap neutral since both teams are near the cap.

Looking 3 yrs from now when Cozens gets a raise

Peterka(1) Eichel(10)-Qinn(1)
Skinner(9)-Cozens(7)-Olofsson(4)
Pekar(2)-3C(4)-Thompson(4)
Bottom 5=(7)
F=49

Dahlin(8)-Joki(4)
Samuelson(2)- vet(5)
xxx-xxx
Vet(3)

Goalie(4)
UPL(2)
G/D= 28

Total=77+ 2D

I dont see how this team can even afford Reinhart in 3 years

This deal could happen next year

Dumb idea to go after Kane especially using Reinhart to do it.

With the Hawks announcing a rebuild Kane might force his way out and I feel I he did Buffalo would be his destination. It would be cool to see Patrick Kane play for Buffalo. He would be at a high level for the next 3 years. Because of his contract it would probably take deal like yours or Reinhart+Montour+pick. In a fantasy world the Hawks would take Skinner’s $9 million deal back but that isn’t happening.

Easily, your assuming Cozens pans out and for some reason are giving Thompson a raise.

Will fix everything
I'd like a small hockey deal to even out the sides on defense.

Miller to Colorado for Ian Cole, with Colorado retaining $1.25M. Miller adds more firepower for Colorado. Cole is a better defender and evens out the sides for Buffalo.

Colorado structured their contracts specifically so Cole would expire when Makar was up for RFA.

I don't think Miller adds a ton to their D, while Cole provides them with a solid, more stay at home option. I certainly don't think they'd retain salary to make it work.

Earlier in the offseason I asked avs fans about Cole and it sounded like they only wanted to move him if it meant clearing space for a good ufa like pietrangelo. Seems like they value him a lot

Buffalo Sabres
Wins Added: 2.8 wins
Salary Added: $5.9 million
In: Taylor Hall, Eric Staal, Cody Eakin, Tobias Rieder
Out: Dominik Kahun, Johan Larsson, Marcus Johansson, Wayne Simmonds, Jimmy Vesey, Michael Frolik

The Sabres made some questionable calls this offseason. Letting go Dominik Kahun was a strange one, as was spending more money on Cody Eakin over Johan Larsson, who had come into his own the prior year as a strong defensive centre.
But in the end they come out ahead in a big way thanks to their two biggest acquisitions, both of which add value to the top six. The first was swapping Marcus Johansson for a cheaper and much more effective Eric Staal, solidifying the centre depth behind Jack Eichel. The most important addition was getting a running mate for Eichel in Taylor Hall, the best free agent forward available. Hall is coming off a down year but still projects to be worth 2.7 wins. Next to Eichel, the best centre he’s ever played with, there’s potential for more and it’s enough to push Buffalo toward the playoff conversation.

NHL offseason by the numbers: Which teams have improved the most (and least)?

Yeeeeah. Sure, this is an on paper calculation. But I think it shows just how silly it is to favor big splashy moves over quiet solid ones.

Hall and Staal are great.....we still need to resolve the ongoing issues with this team.

If they are going to go after a Chicago vet, sign me up for Duncan Keith and not PKane.

I'm fine with going after one of the Chicago pieces (I'd rather go after Toews as he would fit our team, and role better), but if you're doing a deal with Chicago, you need to know they NEED you to clear space out to do their rebuild, so using a top 5 organizational asset to do so, is something I'd want to stay away from doing as you are doing THEM a favor.

Of which there are many. Ugh we need like 2 bottom 6 forwards, top 4 D and a goalie. Impossible to rank in order of importance because they're so lackluster in all those areas.

What are the stats for Skinner and Staal together?

Stall is such a different player now those stats are probably pretty well meaningless.

I think at some point we probably see Skinner back with Eich and Hall driving the Staal line.

Eichel and Hall will still play the PP together every game and rack up PP points.

I'd flip Montour then instead of Miller. Montour has more value than Cole, so the retained money should be no issue.

Colorado has nearly $6M, with Toews and Kamenev to re-sign, plus two more ELCs. Shouldn't be much of an issue for them.

Toews at $10.5M against the cap is a hard pass for me.

Keith at $5.5M per fits within the cap quite nicely.
