2020 Redraft - Top 5

Coach McLellan is comparing Raymond to Redwings great Henrik Zetterberg.

“I said one day he reminds me a little of (Henrik) Zetterberg,” McLellan said. “You could open up a whole book of adjectives to describe Zetterberg. I could probably do that for Lucas right now. He’s a complete player. He plays all three zones; he plays them equally hard. He values each of the three as importantly as the stat sheet. I don’t want to say it’s hard to find players like that but when you do you treasure them.”

Raymond was doing fine before McLellan became Detroit Red Wings coach on Dec. 26. Since then, his game has reached another level. He has 23 points (seven goals, 16 assists) in 16 games under McLellan. He ranks second in the NHL in points during this time, one behind Boston’s David Pastrnak.

With 20 goals and 56 points in 50 games, Raymond is on pace to reach 90 points. No Red Wing has done that since Pavel Datsyuk tallied 97 in both 2007-08 and 2008-09. Zetterberg also hit the mark in 2007-08 (92 points) both players of which were also known for their 2 way game.

“He’s got an abrasiveness to him that I wasn’t aware of,” McLellan said. “I’m going to use a name, and he’s not that player, but a little bit of Zetterberg in him like that determination and a little bit of abrasiveness, the fire kind of.”

McLellan added, “I think they’re both winners. The difference right now is Hank has the jewelry to prove it (2008 Stanley Cup ring) and it takes a team to do that. But I think you could win with Raymond for sure. Competitive, two-way, high hockey IQ, leader.”

Raymond also became the fourth Swede in NHL history to score 20+ goals three different times before the age of 23, joining Mats Sundin (who did it four times), Filip Forsberg, and Gabriel Landeskog.

I get where he's going with the comparison, but he's got a long way to go defensively before he becomes Zetterberg.

I'll still say I don't think anybody ever got into Crosby's head the way Hank did. Those back to back Cup Finals Hank pretty much neutralized Sid, and you could tell in the years that followed (After the concussions, there was about a 2 year period there that Crosby didn't play Detroit) that Crosby hated Hank, from a competitive standpoint.

Hank had the advantage of playing and practicing against Pavel everyday. They were always practicing against each other even after training.

Only Connor Bedard is younger than Lucas in this group. I rate Raymond a bit higher than Stutzle because of his overall 2 way game while having similar offensive abilities overall. Lucas is also younger than Stutzle.

Stuzle and Raymond are at 1-2 in whatever order you want to give. There's valid arguments for both at the no. 1 spot.

Then you have Jarvis, Sanderson, Faber to round out the top 5 and I think these 3 can be interchangeable as well.

Rossi, Lundell, Laf in the next group. Rossi with less track record but absolutely climbing this year

What am I refusing to admit? I said he wouldn’t be 7th currently. What’s cringe is the Wings fans thinking anything is decided by 50 games of pace and continuously pretending like a redraft is a current best player list.
It’s not 50 games, he also led all 2020 players in scoring last season as well.

It’s was a bad take then

This is pretty much my feeling, too.

As a Sens fan, I put Sanderson ahead of Stutzle

If you feel like Stutzle should be down in tier 2 then that’s fine. I don’t think you would get buy in across the league on that but Sanderson is certainly a very good player and worthy of the top 5 ranking. But this would be a matter of moving Stutzle down based on something you don’t like about his game more than moving Sanderson up.

The impressive thing about Rossi is everyone thought he was carried by Kaprizov. But when Kaprizov got injured, Rossi has increased his scoring to PPG rate. At the moment he plays with scrubs like Foligno & Hartman but he's still scoring.

Another bonus is that he plays a very mature and responsible game on defense too.

Can't ask more from this kid and I think he should definitely crack the top 5 on any 2020 redraft list.

If Norris and Pinto were ironmen, and Raymond was offered for Stu, I would accept the trade no lie. Sens need that gamebreaking winger and if it wasn't for Norris and Pinto always getting injured, running Norris-Pinto-Greig down the line is still a strong centre core. Now league wide I'd say Stu is marginally better than Raymond both due to being a centre and better producer 5on5 (Along with elite defensive metrics there), but it's super close. Raymond still has an elite skillset.

Believing Stutzle is superior to Raymond but offering to trade him 1 for 1 under the scenario where Norris/Pinto can stay healthy and be your top two centers is... Certainly interesting.

Sens need that gamebreaking winger more. Norris-Pinto-Greig is still a strong centre core. Also Stu is a bit better, but it's very marginal imho.

Stutzle/Norris is a drastically better one two punch than Norris/Pinto. Like... Not remotely close.

You're basically swapping an elite talent for an elite talent and filling your "Gamebreaking winger" need while crippling yourself down the middle.

This Rossi kid is looking like a 10 year vet. I'll take him over Laf at this point. Kid makes good decisions all game. Laf seems lazy after getting the bag and perhaps playing with breadman may have inflated some numbers. Early enough in his career to turn it up. Solid draft but Rossi is climbing fast

Stutzle
Sanderson
Faber
Raymond
Jarvis
Lundell
Peterka
Lafreniere
Rossi
