The Kings will very likely be picking in the Top 5-6 again next season, and next years draft looks to be very defense heavy. I just don't see how the Kings can pass up drafting a potential franchise center at this spot. Take Byfield and address defense next season with someone like Clarke, Power or Hughes.
No way. Kings will be contending for a playoff spot. The Pacific still looks to be incredibly weak and if GV stays healthy and Blake finds a top 4 shutdown D to play with DD (Brenden Dillon please) they are on the way.

Disagree. The Kings have a LONG way to go. Just like the Kings are getting better, the Ducks and other teams will too. Vegas still has another couple before the wheels fall off

I wanted to disagree with this a second time

The Kings are not going to be better than Edmonton or Vegas by a long shot. Then you have to deal with Calgary, Vancouver and Phoenix. Two of those three teams will make sure the Kings are no better than fifth, and probably sixth in the Pacific next season.

I wouldn't have cared this much if it was the Sens or the Red Wings winning the lottery and we ended up 2nd. I would've been fine with that. I'm just absolutely livid that the Pens, the Hawks, the Habs all get an equal opportunity at Lafreniere. NHL should have protected the 1st overall pick from those 8 teams.

Why montreal? We totally deserve a French born hockey player in our city. We havent had a superstar offensive player since when?

Depends on your definition of "contending for a playoff spot", if that means playing meaningful games in march, but probably windup finishing 10th or 11th in the west, I think that's possible. I also think they will have many peaks and valleys due to their youth, which could result in the season getting away from them in the first 25 games.

I read your first line in Bill Clinton's voice

I would define contending for a playoff spot as actually having a chance to make the playoffs and finishing 9th or 10th

But look at the drop off after 8 the last few seasons around the 10th and 11 spot. Did 10th or 11th place really contend for a playoff spot?

Did the flyers or panthers really contend here?

Who knows if the Kings can sneak in next season during what will most likely be a shortened season similar to the lockout years. I wouldn't necessarily bet on it but an infusion of young talent could help them sneak in. They won't necessarily be adding some sort of elite scoring talent so scoring will still be an issue; however, they can win some games through hard work and good goaltending.

The layoff will be good for the vets as well since 11 and 8 eat so many minutes. Only concern is what Doughty is eating now that he isn't eating said minutes.

I still stand by my timeline that 2021 is all about being in the hunt for a playoff spot up to around 15 games to go. See more growth from prospects and have T-Mac's system become more ingrained. 2022 is playoffs or bust with this being even more of a necessity due to moving up to #2 in the draft.

Cap might stay stagnant for a few years. ELCs will be even more important. Kings will have an abundance of forward prospects plus cap space. Look for a trade next off-season to bring in a legit NHL'er at a position of need: be it defense or at wing.

If Lafreniere goes to Montreal he will never be able to go outside. I'd rather him go to Carolina or Florida than subject him to that media circus.

What about the fans? Don’t we deserve anything? We been stuck with a mediocre team since 1993. Middle of the pack team that overachieve at times. We breath hockey around here, we deserve laffy. Our media don’t, I get that but the fans does

Obviously not. But I think 80-85 points (assuming 82 game season) would be a good step.

If the Kings are in the bottom 5 again, then that's not progress. They should be aiming to compete for a Wild Card spot.
Bottom 5 of the league? No
Bottom 5 in the conference is almost a given

If next season is a thing and does start on time, this will be the last season with 15 teams. The 5th bottom team finishes 10th. I thinK that is the Kings likely highest finish point, I think 11 or 12 is far more likely

First of all , why are even here discussing this and not kings hockey?

Second. Nobody deserves anything.

Third- Nobody cares bro

 A fan base talking about deserving when they have the most cups wins out of any of team in the league. Get the hell out of here with that nonsense. Now if you don't have anything constructive to say in the LA KINGS forum, then I suggest you find the nearest exit and complain about deserving in the Montreal forum

Exactly, picking in the bottom 6 next year means that they not only don't improve at all but arguably get worse. Had last season been completed I think the team actually moves back a few more spots in the draft.

Despite the relative inexperience of the D they were actually average this year, dump Ryan and Hutton for a seasoned shut down guy and the team just needs to give up 1 fewer goal every 10 games to finish top 10. Just lighting a fire under DD alone should do that trick.

Clearly the biggest improvement will need to be 5 on 5 offense and the PP. Give GV a mostly full season and add a Stutzle and goal scoring should begin to increase. No reason to not expect this team will be a middle of the pack team next year. I also think Blake will be under pressure to somehow begin earning playoff revenue.

Can someone tell the Kings front office you should ALWAYS talk to as many prospects as possible , you never know when a player will become available via trade/waiver/ drop in the draft ranking or the opportunity to move up in the draft becomes available.

We are not making the playoffs next season we are in the Lose for Aatu sweepstakes. This team has ways to go before we can contend again. My two cents.
