There isn’t a snowballs chance in hell Schneider or Lundkvist or Robertson or Jones for that matter spend their entire ELC in the AHL. A trade would take place before that would happen. They aren’t going to stash them their just cause there are players in front of them.
1. It’s bad for their development once they prove they belong and fine tune their skills in the A..
2. By letting an asset just sit like that instead of using it to upgrade a weakness on the big club is poor asset evaluation.
3. How long does it take for one of them to become disgruntled and have their Agent demand a trade out of the organization once they show they have the skill to play in the NHL full time? That’s not good for the player or the organization

Let’s take Schneider just as an example, he’s already got an NHL body and attitude. He has some games already in the AHL where he has not looked out of place coming off of being one of if not the best D in the WHL. Nils comes in this year and NYR gives him the 3rd D spot. The year goes by and Schneider plays really well in the A fine tuning his game and has an excellent season.
Now it’s next offseason, Schneider is chomping at the bit to get in the league. He’s proved he’s got the goods, but he’s blocked by 3 players in the NHL. One with a NMC for 2 more seasons, one is Adam Jesus Fox, and the Third is the rangers golden boy as far as prospects go. Do you think he is going to be happy to sit on his hands in Hartford for 2 more years? How is that better for his career?
He wants in the NHL so bad he can taste it. He got nothing left to prove. If you keep him there, you run the risk of stunting his development and ruining a prized asset or ostracizing him to the point he he demands a trade so he can break in the league elsewhere. No kid, once he proves he belongs, is going to sit and wait his turn for 3 years. It usually doesn’t happen like that. Especially these kids who come highly touted out of the first Rd. Schneider has already been projected by a lot of scouts to be ready for NHL duty sooner rather then later. I’m going around Harvey’s barn a little bit here, but the point I’m trying to make is there will be a trade of 1 of these 2 guys before it ever gets to that point. It’s far more likely 1 is dealt, and then when Trouba’s NMC is a NTC, the one that stays is bumped up and ready for top 4 minutes with Fox then the other scenario of 1 prized guy sitting on his hands in Hartford hoping that the rangers maybe deal trouba before his contract ends so he can finally break into a league he’s been ready for, for the better part of 2 years already. It’s just not logical or realistic

Agreed. And it's champing.

He’s had an absolutely fantastic season. Borderline perfect.

The fickle minds of HF were upset because he wasn’t dominating offensively in the first few blowout games of the WJC. When the games mattered, he was the team’s best defenseman alongside Drysdale. Wasn’t on for a single even strength goal (or goal in general maybe?) against the entire tournament and made some really clutch offensive plays. Really, it’s funny how people were sleeping on him.

Comes to Hartford and plays like he not only belongs, but like a good AHL player. Shame he couldn’t spend more time there.

Rips up the WHL and takes defenseman of the year, showing an offensive game most didn’t see coming.

Earns himself a trip to the WC and wins gold with Canada. Who gives a f*** how much ice time he got. If someone told us he would be dressing for Canada in the WC eight months after we drafted him, we’d be freaking out. Amazing experience.

Curious to see where he ranks among prospects around the league at this point. Outside of Guhle fanboys in Montreal and Devils fans, most recognize he’s legit at this point.

I don’t think anyone thought he wasn’t a good pick in a vacuum. The problem is there’s a logjam with Fox, Trouba, and Lundkvist all RHDs. There’s no room for Braden. So what do you do?

Take it one step at a time. Start one in Hartford, and when it's time to make a decision, we pull the trigger on who we trade. There's no need to worry about that now. Kick the can down the road.

Schneider and Lundkvist are both RFA in 2024 (Robertson as well, FYI) but Schneider, unlike Lundkvist won't be arbitration eligible so that makes the negotiations a bit easier.

Trading Skjei to draft Schneider was such an underrated move. Barely talked about but we’re walking to the bank from this one at the moment...

Skjei just played 24 minutes per game in the playoffs. Schneider plays against children.

Braden doesn’t have to come here and be a offensive dynamo. He should be focusing on being a defensively sound rugged Canadian farm boy who isn’t going to let any asshole in Igor’s crease. We need that.

I think the fear with Schneider when we drafted him was that he would just be defensive and not have enough of an offensive game. He is a defense first type of defenseman. A shutdown type of guy.

Curiously Nils Lundkvist’s defensive game also gets underrated because of the offensive numbers he’s put up the last two seasons in the SHL. But really he made that league as a 17 year old because of his calm and steady defensive game.

I think we should probably look to kick the can down the road on all of Schneider, Lundkvist, Jones and Robertson—maybe two, three, four seasons each. IMO they’ve all got the goods. Might even add Miller into that group. I think both Lundkvist and Schneider are very exciting prospects to have and I’m thinking that maybe one of them could switch over to LD.

Matthew Robertson was named the WHL’s Central Division Defenseman of the Year.
So we also got that going for us.
Maybe we should try something new. Start playing 3 defenseman and two forwards instead of the other way around. :sarcasm:

His team just lost the series 4-1. He plays against no one now.

what a horrendous take.
Add it to the pile of horrendous takes. It grows by the day.

Skjei should have some whiplash with how much he was getting turned around tonight. It was a typical skating around like a chicken with its head cut-off performance from Skjei.

Not impressed at all with Skjei in the playoffs. Definitely one not to lose any sleep over. Good trade.

There's definitely room. In fact, at this moment, there's more room for Braden's brand of hockey than Lundkvist's.

I thought the only people who lost sleep over Skjei being traded were 16 year old fan girls on twitter.

great post certainly a prospect to be excited about.

our forwards are deep and have a lot of talent but it’s our blue line that has me so excited for the future. I never would have imagined the rangers would have such a solid stable of guys back there. The icing on the cake is Fox as a rookie. That’s where the true strength of this team lies. Shesty In net and a bunch of big talented kids protecting him and moving the puck out of the zone
