I don't know if this is what prompted the Marchand comp, but Berard himself did say that he models himself after Marchand.

Berard will be a steal in hindsight. He’s going to fill out decently and while I don’t see him being a Marchand in terms of point per game production year over year, he could definitely turn out in the Gallagher/Atkinson mould. I personally would love Gallagher on the Rangers, so I’d be more than happy if Berard can even be a 35-40 point Gallagher-lite for us eventually. Even that is an absolute home run for his draft position. Anything more, which doesn’t seem impossible, is a grand slam.

Funny thing is that he has a brother who is also quite skilled, and at 16 he's 6'0". Probably for the best that Berard isn't that tall, because if you added that size to his combo of skating and skill he'd have been gone in the first or early second for sure.

Maybe Brett still has some growth left in him. He just turned 18 in September, so he was very young for his draft class.

Yeah I don't watch the us development program much except the rare occasion when they scrimmage NCAA teams, but just looking at the guys playing around Berard last year and where they were drafted, it seems size could have been a major factor in him being a 5th rounder, not a 2nd.

The 2 -7th rounders got Nyr Berard right ? In a trade up. Imagine that works out

That was Vierling, but a similar principle applies.

Two great mid round picks, which is a nice change from garbage like Jason Wilson and Brandon Crawley.

Agreed. My point is I'd rather take shots at players with upside than pick two guys whose literal ceiling was an AHL player to begin with.

That I can wholeheartedly agree with.

I still believe Berard and Vierling dropping was caused by the pandemic affecting hockey in NA, with so many European prospects playing in the weeks leading up to the draft, it just feels like a lot of them had a late surge in where they eventually ended up being picked.

I haven't really had the time to dive into this to see if it's correct, it's just a theory, but both Berard and Vierling IMO could have easily been 3rd rounders if not 2nd rounders

Vierling really took off after the trade to Barrie, but it wasn't a huge sample size due to the pause, so maybe some teams didn't put much stock into it.

Between 45 and 89 despite his size. We got him at 134. He could have been ranked 30-50 if he were a bit bigger.

hitting on 1st round picks is great, but you need to hit on a few of the late rounders as well.

Thats the difference between Edmonton and Tampa. Be like Tampa.

With Laf and Kakko, we have our McDavid/Drai. now we need guys like Berard and Jones and Barron to be our Cirellis, and Points, and Palats. Those are the guys the Oilers are missing.

dont forget about Killorn as well, if Bolts move him, I hope Rangers are interested. underrated player in my opinion but another another winger. I think he has played center in the past.

Meh, Killorn is one of those guys who people love when hes on another team but tend to sour on when hes on yours.

Gourde OTOH, I'd love to have.

Lay off the booze. They haven't proven anything yet.
