So Allan Walsh is ignoring the fact that bonuses are not taxed to the US players but they are to Canadian players...and players have to agree to move their money to retirement rather than taking it now...so yeah taxation really does matter.
He is misleading in his statement.
Walsh is only being a good agent - his objective, as it should be, is to see as many teams bid for his players services. It doesn’t serve his clients best interest by saying a % of teams have no hope of bidding for his clients services. I do wonder why no one asked him, why a Mtler moved to Cali 30+ years ago and has never bothered to come back?

might be true, but it's still a good example of how taxes are being used as an excuse. Numbers might not be 100% accurate, his specific example might not apply to every single player, but it's pretty much this : if you're european you can do this, if you're american you can do that, you can also do this other stuff wether you're euro, us, or can player, etc. Most of the time moves that would make it up for the tax differences. Guys like McDavid, Matthews, Draisatl, Tavares would not leave 10 or 15 Millions on the table (over the duration of contract), come on now...

i wouldn't take it as a given that Juulsen doesn't beat out 1 of Kulak, romanov or mete to start the season... i'd add Edmundson to the list, but given the new contract, he'll start the season in the top-6 regardless of whether or not the younger guys legitimately out play him.

I would absolutely love to see Juulsen healthy and crack the NHL team out of camp. But I understand that the team can't bank on him at this moment into the off-season. And it has nothing to do with his play, but more about his health.

This 1,000 times. He won’t break lineup opening day because they want him to play a lot and make sure he’s healthy.

I think he’ll be top pairing in Laval and if he does what’s expected then he’ll get first call up. Hope he can do it. He showed a lot of promise before his injuries and I hope this season he can make the leaps to get back to his previous trajectory.

I doubt he gets exposed to waivers if they feel he performs at top 6 level in camp... That would make no sense at all.

Realistically injuries have always been common in Habs land, or at least they have for as long as I've been following the team. Juulsen could start as a number 8 and end up playing 50+ games.

lol that would be so f***ing bad , another washed up player

I will give you that his stay with the Caps wasnt spectacular , but he played well with us earlier this season. I'm willing to take a chance with Kovi at that price tag , you never know . 1.5 it's the salary of a 3rd line guy... low risk possible high reward, i'm in.

He liked his brief stint with us and wanted to return , Yes his best years are behind , but don't disregard what strong motivation could do to a player.

At worst , you play him on the 3rd line with some PP time... Man that one timer on the PP alone is wort 1.5

The thing is we don't need 3rd line wingers

of course we need a top 6 too , but for now one month away from the draft and the FA , i'll take Kovi with open arms . I posted somewhere today that i'm open to make trades for Laine and poolparty . they wouldnt be bad on our top 6
Ya we badly need top 6 wingers , but saying Kovalchuk can play on a top 6 on a regular basis is just a no for me. Literally another Semin.

I would be high on Poolparty + his value is pretty bad , i think that would be a great risk overall... and Laine well its Laine. Id give the moon for him

If that’s the case and all he does is resign Domi and Mete than we may actually be worse than last year my still missing Thompson and Cousins, as sad as that is.

We buy him to trade him to the next guy.

And to be fair you should also bookmark Brian Burke's clip on HNIC.

Yeah, I’m sure it is not exactly that simple. For one, they have to defer the money and don’t get it right up front. I’m sure many guys would not want to do that.

On this, I’ll take Burke’s word over Walsh.

He was good for like 10 games, after that he started fading away. He had 1 goal in his last 12 games here, just 4pts over that same stretch. He had 1 assist in last 7 GP here too.

He's done.

Ilya Kovalchuk was one of the few bright spot in a pretty miserable season. If we are going to suck and we will for awhile, I want to be entertained and 37 years old Ilya Kovalchuk is more entertaining than 90% of the players on this team.

Makes no sense to bring back a guy who’s done and won’t help us. Better to use the money and space for someone who will. A big push for the team doesn’t include Kovalchuk. That’s a recipe for more mediocrity.

There’s no “big push” and we are a mediocre team. If I’m going to watch a lousy team I want to be entertained and Kovalchuk was more entertaining in that 1 month than most of our players.

Kovalchuk will get us more points in OT or Shootout alone than any other scrub that Bergevin will attempt to sign.

Amd with that attitude we’ll always be mediocre. With Kovy, we’d be worse than that. He’s done. He was done when he was with us and it was a miracle to get the 3rd when we did. His last 10 games with us he was invisible and he was worse than that with the Caps. So if you’d be more entertained watched a has been skate around aimlessly for 12 min a night, than you’d be in luck!

Poolparty can’t cost that much. Grab him and Athanasiou’s rights for a 2nd and Byron and boom, we got some wingers for KK.

He was almost about to do the impossible and carry this garbage team back into the playoffs spot when he scored against Toronto in Febuary.

Yes, I want the washed up Kovalchuk back because even at his advance age he was still able to pull some moves and create some plays than most players in our roster.
