“Blues lost tonight, so mathematically the kings are still in it.” -Faust

Not to rag too hard on our crew too much, but I've spent most of this season listening to the opposing broadcasts and I realized how bad we are. The Avs announcers tonight spent so much time talking about Kopi, Kempe, Byfield, Vilardi, hell they even were talking up Turcotte.

one of our guys is to busy thinking about wine and the other one sounds like he learned about hockey last year. Just want Bob back. Let Stoll call the game. At least he knows and talks about hockey related stuff and is in tune with the game.

Our crew milked all they could from Kopitar’s 1000 point milestone and also the cup runs from 7-9 years ago during the broadcast. AEG needs to wake up, organization is getting stale.

Todd alludes to Byfield being a roster player next season with support. That support better be some sort of acquisition or signing because it's not on this roster.

Well that was fun while it lasted. Pretty much the past 6 games were the best games to watch all year win or lose. Yes watching Byfield finally get a cup of tea made my season. Future is bright for the kid.

It’s obviously too late in the season to do anything about this now, but the Kings have to abandon this 1-3-1 business, especially against a team like the Avalanche. Way too passive. It’s 2021, Todd. Get with the times.
The 1-3-1 has been around since the 20s when the Leafs started using it. If a team isn’t fast, it is supposed to prevent odd man rushes. League tried to stop teams from using it by eliminating the two line pass rule and allow stretch passes. Teams adjusted it is still one of the best defenses in use. Until the kings have speedy defenders they will use the 1-3-1

Odd man rushes are the least of their worries. They are too soft and have too much trouble breaking out to give the other team half the ice with speed and momentum to enter the zone or dump it in.
Their forwards have speed and are better suited to forecheck hard and relentlessly and try to play a little chippy. Not something used since the 20s for teams with size that play a brute style and clog things up when leading by one goal.
The Kings were down 2 goals tonight and were still playing 1-3-1 with 4 minutes left in the game.
They scored when they had forwards deep.

Well it's a pretty good sign that Gabe and Quinton were the two best players according to my eye test tonight. Really liked Andersson's game as well, and surprisingly I noticed Lemieux a couple times.

On the flip side, Cal looked pretty shaky. Definitely not his best game.

Younger Bob. Older Bob wasn't making the broadcast any good either.

Is this what McLellan used in SJ? I know he never took them all the way, but he won a lot of games with that team if my memory serves me right.

I'll be at the game tonight (Saturday). I'm bummed we won't get to see Byfield in person, but I was hoping someone else would get called up for a cup of coffee like Turcotte, Kaliyev, or Thomas. Either way, excited to see some Kings hockey in-person. Our last game attended was actually the Airforce Academy Stadium Series which is nuts to think about. So much has happened between then and now.

Breakouts are one of the biggest problems they have. They always look for stretch passes and forwards almost never come down to be available for a short pass like they used to. It seems like its always 2 dmen handling the puck behind the net and 3 forwards skating around the blue line. Just terrible.

Bob always stuck to calling the game and very rarely provided commentary and left that for Fox. I wish Faust stuck to calling the game because I think his pbp is pretty good, it's just too much of the other stuff.

I think that'll come with time. I feel like with age you grow out of overcompensating, and I think Faust probably still feels a ton of pressure coming after Bob even though it's been a few years now.

Cal's last few games has been pretty meh. Vilardi on the other hand, has looked good since he was benched and even more so in the last 4-5 games. Maybe there's something to a young guy watching from the stands, resting the body for a couple of days and working on his game in practice. In his last interview, it sounded like he needed that break to let his body recover and get his game back.
