This year is also a bit of an anomaly with division play only. We’re in by far the toughest division IMO, with 4 very good teams above us, 1 comparable team, and 2 bottom 5 teams. Our goal differential is a bit inflated from playing the devils and sabres. On the other hand, no other division has more than 3 top teams, so we’d likely be in playoff position if we weren’t in the east. We’d also probably have more points since we’d be playing an easier schedule.

Anyways weird year and we’re likely a playoff team as a wildcard in a normal year. It’s really too bad that the nhl didn’t do a mini play-in round of 1 or 3 game series for the 4-5 in each division, as then we’d be in a very interesting/competitive race with the flyers for 5.

Replace the +14 we got from two wins against the flyers with 2 * (GFA-GAA), excluding those games, and I bet you get a rather different picture.

If we're excluding our two lopsided victories, shouldn't we also then by default exclude those of the other teams? It's not our problem that we spanked the Flyers harder than anyone else has been able to spank them this season.

Team has been inconsistent as hell, but we've played well enough overall to be closer to or be in a playoff spot. With that said, as long as they compete until the very end and make every game worth watching and meaningful, it's hard to be hard broken over missing the playoffs when absolutely no one expected us to make it. Plus, we'll get another (albeit tiny) chance at the lottery

Am no sure as to why the two Philly games need to be excluded, but the 4-0 losses to the Bs and Isles do not.

At this point the difference is the Pens series. When you’re playing only division games going 2-6 against the Pens with 3 one goal losses is just a killer.
