What can y'all tell me about him?
Absolutely nothing. Punching him into the google machine.
What can y'all tell me about him?
First Russian forward we've drafted since 2004.
how does a guy this huge who plays center and can score in the KHL at the age of 20 last to round 7? even if he's an overager. i dont' get it
Russian factor + overager + had some injury troubles last season + Detroit's Russian scouting is definitely better than average NHL club Russian scouting.
To add on I dont think he really played in any big tournaments that usually showcase many prospects to scouts. Also, we dont draft Russians ever, I think the ability of our Russian scouting today is completely unknown.
Marchenko was drafted at 7-th round as an overager after a serious injury, haven't played at U18/U20 championships and spent most part of that season at MHL, so I think that the scouting quality is at least good.
Red Wings Central @RedWingsCentral
The #RedWings have never taken a Russian they didn't feel confident wanted to play in North America. This could be interesting.
Marchenko was not really an unknown though, before all the injuries he was one of the most popular young defenseman in his age group, when all the injuries and health issues struck NHL teams pretty much forgot about him and the only reason the wings picked him is because their head Russian scout talked to Marchenko sometime before the draft and he expressed his desire to come over seas and play for Detroit.
I like it. Classic Detroit Red Wings seventh-round dice roll.

I really hope this kid wants to come over. I doubt he'll take part in any of the camps while he's still in the KHL but after a year or two he should be pretty much ready to make the lineup.
His actual draft year was 2012 but how many guys picked in that draft would have lead their KHL team in scoring last season? His production is really impressive along with the size.
