I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that Jaro, OD, Muzz, CJ and Nellie fill out Blake’s beach volleyball squad nicely as a reason they are the people chosen to work for the team.

I guess all those players the Kings have brought in who have made smooth transitions to the NHL over the past two seasons while they rebuild has been a figment of our imaginations.

It's not at all and I've several times gone out of my way to make sure to give them credit for that. I'll actually even be more specific--they've done phenomenal things with mid-tier NCAA players making the transition. I wouldn't be surprised to see Eyssimont, Hults join Walker, Roy, Lizotte, Iafallo soon.

My concern is the younger players transitioning--though I guess Turcotte sort of fits with the group above. Vilardi, Kupari, Kaliyev, Thomas, and other offensive blue chippers--what will become of them? I know they're not all going to make it, and some of them will be phenomenal regardless of devlopment, but even if I peel back my criticism altogether, it's still an unknown what these guys can/will do with blue chip offensive prospects as we haven't had them for a long while.

If you guys think Blake's hires are upsetting, you should take a gander at Colorado's staff.

Colorado Avalanche Coaches and Staff

Former Avs include Joe Sakic atop, along with:

Craig Billington, Nolan Pratt, Brett Clark, Steven Reinprecht, Brian Willsie, Alexei Gusarov, Curtis Leschyshyn.

They also have journeymen such as Cody Bass, Dan Laperriere, Brad Smith, and former Kings goalie Ryan Bach as their goalie coach.

Not much skill among them.

Here's another example of a GM hiring his old buddies.
Hockey Operations

Steve Yzerman, Pat Verbeek, Nik Kronwall, Jiri Fischer, Dan Cleary, Mark Howe, Kirk Maltby, Kris Draper, Jesse Wallin.

They also have Shawn Horcoff, Dan Bylsma, Doug Houda, and Yzerman's own brother, Chris, on staff.

Want me to go through more of these examples?

You still haven't mentioned much less explained the Willie D hire. I guess he counts as a Blake crony insider because he coached the 2010 WJC team that had Martin Jones on it who of course played for both the Kings and Sharks!

You know what else these guys have in common with Blake?

They haven’t won shit.

Even more bleak: if my math is correct, the last “former assclown player turned GM to win a Stanley Cup” was Bob Gainey 21 years ago with Dallas. It’s just a bad bad idea all around.

Jim Rutherford was a shitty goalie turned GM. And Brian MacLellan was a former player too. In fact, both played for the Kings, and they both managed their teams to Stanley Cups.

Rutherford managed 2 teams to the Cup (Canes and Pens). Dale Tallon built the first iteration of the Hawks team that won in '09. Yzerman hasn't won a ring, but you can't deny how well built his TBL teams are (multiple ECF + SCF appearance to boot). This'll be a popular take around here, but Doug Wilson isn't a slouch GM either even if he flamed out with Karlsson's contract decision (which to be fair, we have our own damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't version of). I'm also a big fan of Sakic's moves.

If we're talking about nepotism related to former stars, Stan Bowman is Scotty Bowman's son, but I don't see Chicago complaining about that specific coincidence post-3 Cups. What they are complaining about is his bad recent moves, which are fair game. Blake hasn't been perfect, but nothing he's done even approaches justification for replacing him IMO, especially given how well he's managed to restock our prospect pool.

31 teams means if you win a Cup once every 31 years you're average. We've got 2 in the last 8 years, and 3 Finals appearances in the last 27. It seems like people were generally happy/at least pleasantly surprised with Blake's moves before the announcement of Futa's departure. It was widely speculated that Futa would be snatched up for a GM role soon anyways. Plus, the fruits of Hextall's labors are showing in Philly, and having him there in what seems to be a similar role I think will help quite a lot. Why don't we see how the draft and next season goes before we call for Blake's head during the pause.

Where are all the strawmen coming from?

No one said Johnson and Modry needed to be Gretzky and Orr.

No one said "any former player hire is bad."

No one remotely approached "fire Blake."

All I said was I have questions about this organization's ability to develop blue chip talent, and the visual of Futa losing influence to two guys with pretty dim resumes who happen to be part of Blake's Point Break gang is questionable. I then conceded I was wrong and should give them a chance.

What exactly is the beef?

There are others who actually think that way that I'm responding to. Like the poster above me in my previous post who incessantly whines about Blake. The injection of young talent in the past couple of seasons who don't look out of place leads me to believe that they're on the right path. When was the last time the Kings brought up young players who looked like NHLers? Toffoli and Pearson back in 2013 and 2014?

Are we now saying that hiring past players is good thing? Or is that still taboo? I'm so freaking lost

I dunno, I think this one is debatable. Murray and Emerson were not complete failures, but they didn't help Pearson and Toffoli stay on the path to becoming dependable 2nd line players.

You have to remember that Pearson suffered a major injury. It was very evident when I came back from injury he had some catching up to do. He was stuck on a crop team and recovered slower than one would expect but at the same time can we really set a realistic goal on how fast a player with his somewhat limited skill set should come back? Watching Peterson from the start his game was more about speed and tenacity the skill itself. Coming back from a major leg injury that affects his speed, you have to expect regression.

Watching Toffoli his problem was not development, it was between the ears. I commented on these boards numerous times how his problem was laziness and lack of compete, that is on the coach and teammates and not guys like Murray and Emerson. Prior to being traded he stepped up his game and looked like the Toffoli of old. In my opinion he was fighting to stay in LA where he was comfortable. After he was traded and continued on that path but with more complimentary teammates helping inflate that total. You have to remember that these two had campy as their best center for quite a long time span. Each player is an addition to a line and not someone expected to drive a line.

The kings have not drafted a true superstar since Doughty. These guys should succeed without any help.

The bigger problem is the kings did not draft for skill for many years and relied on tough, big bodied, hard checking players. You just can’t blame the development stuff for not turning these guys and to 40 goal scores. The real test now is to see how our skill players like Vilardi , Kupari, Kaliyev, and Turcotte pan out. Even guys like Kempe were projected to be more of a gritty energy star player.

Before a crap all over these moves I want to let it play out and see what these guys can actually do with some skill. Like it or not Blake has been in the NHL for 30 years as a rookie, a star player, a protégé to one of the better GM’s in the league, and Has overseen teams at two of the highest levels in the world. Even if people are upset with things that happened 15 years ago you have to admit he seems to be taking this team in the right direction.

I have to wonder what it’s like constantly looking to antagonize anyone on the internet within reach. I’ve made a few posts, today, on this topic. You take this shit WAY too seriously.

Well said. Any time arguments insue and especially dumb ones not ironic to find the same names always attached. Just strange yet alone with the same fan base to spend a life constantly seeking to antagonize at any and all moments presented. No clue why with repeat offenders mods do nothing and rather join the arguments...

Simple to avoid, just tell me I'm the greatest hockey mind on the boards, and ignore me, I'm good lol jk, but in all seriousness when there is no ONE right way to compete, you are going to find differences of opinions, it's how they are hashed out, this is literally a discussion board, so yea, that's going to happen etc.

What's funny is that you weren't the target of my spiel either. It's the guys who whine about BLuc in every post. I made a few posts on this topic too because I'm sick of seeing the same people constantly spewing false narratives, as if what's being done within this organization is exclusive to them.

And what should I be given a warning for? Pointing out facts to those you don't like to hear them? Sorry for injecting some common sense in here. If you guys prefer to bitch and moan over everything Rob Blake does, go ahead and cry about it. You sensitive babies are too soft. If anyone has a problem with me or anyone else calling out someone who posts reactionary crap without any knowledge, I'll still be here.

I'm also not antagonizing anyone. I'm backing up my point and rationale with a set of facts. It's also the same group of offenders who prefer to just bitch and moan about the current management group.

Well... "the poster above you in your previous post" was me so... If I'm misunderstanding then my bad.

I made a general comment and never once used your name and literally wrote "nameS". Sure seem insecure and like you believe yourself you are what I wrote though lol. "Getting sick of people constantly spewing false narratives" Please find me one yet alone all of the posts moaning about Rob Blake or other things. From there once again I never once did what you're accusing me of and greater more you're now making lies about a poster, attacking them, and resorting to name calling clearly showing who is the "sensitive babies are too soft". Differently not going to name call yet straight funny when I did not and do not do a single thing you've named, never once named you or singled out an individual and yet receive a quote along with your usual resorting to ad hominen "spewing false narratives" and not "rationale with a set of fact".... Will not be responding further as not what I come on here for.

You responded to someone who was quoting me (and that was a poster who I wasn't "attacking"), then you go on to write a bunch of drivel stating this isn't what you come on here for when you're adding fuel to the fire about wanting mods to go after people for some unbeknownst reason that you cannot explain.

Some of you take this shit too personally. Try sticking to discussing hockey and stop whining about other posters. You asking for mods to interject is like crying to the school principal over a disagreement. That's petty and childish.
