He was supposed to slow down 5 years ago yet he is still scoring 40+ goals a season. What sucks is that a lockout cost him his real rookie season. He has a legit chance to pass 99. His career low in goals is 32. And judging by his durable body's history, I like his chances.

People said he would slow down at 29? lol No. He has a chance, but I'm not betting on it. Players don't gradually score less and less. They tend to hit a wall and fall apart when they're done. We don't know what year that will be for Ovechkin.

Yeah they did. Hockey fans tend to think NHL players start declining at 28.

I really don't see the argument against Ovie passing Gretzky unless it's a freak injury that would make him very fragile.

i'm not really sure i'd use "disengaged" specifically because i think under willie they were just collecting checks, there was hardly a game where they did anything more than "get to their spots" while i think under tmac i see them trying to be creative or at least getting to their spots faster, but they're just flat-out not good enough to do anything with it

like, the end result is the same but i like to think i see some effort

So we knew it would be bad this year and that was the "plan", but it is okay for T-Mac's squad to be worse than last year with Willie D? They are behind last year's pace, right?

Also, that "more entertaining" thing they had going on very early in the season doesn't feel like it anymore: or for awhile.

Kopitar's numbers are up from last year, as are Iafallo's. Brown is way down. Toffoli has been better. Doughty is the same sort of there sometimes, sort of not there sometimes. Wagner is playing more per game, but his numbers are down. He's likely just not that good in the first place, and last year was the adrenaline of being in the NHL. Younger and less experienced on defense, without the next Doughty on the horizon anywhere.

They're scoring about the same as last year. Giving up about the same as last year. The PP is about the same. The PK is about the same. They got outshot by 2+ shots a game last year, and outshooting the opponent by 5 this year. They're on pace for 65 points instead of 71. That's 3 wins. It's not a 20 point difference or anything.

But it's not hard to not invest in them. When the players aren't invested, no fan should ever be. At least the players get paid for the hassle of dressing up in their little uniforms in pointless exercises of futility. Fans don't even get a refund.

Last year the effort was gone, this year the effort is there, they compete and are in every game they just lack finish. They are really missing a couple of high end scorers and only have kopi to carry the team in points.

the roster get mostly turned over this year, and if your going to rebuild two 30th place finishes is absolutely the ideal way to go about it. The team honestly plays well most nights, add in a productive Kaliyev and Vilardi and the foundations are there for a good team again.

I still watch and I don’t let it get to me. It’s painfully obvious with the drafting they had that they were going to suck for awhile, just no way around it, when Toffoli is the best player you draft in a decade it’s going to be ugly, but atleast we knew it was coming. It’s a bit frustrating seeing how bad and uninterested guys like DD and Kopitar are, but it’s human nature. These guys have played in massive games and now they are in a situation where no matter what they do the team is going to suck, I know it’s easy to be critical but put yourself in their shoes.
