I'm sorry we clearly just don't see eye to eye on this matter. Canada winning 2015 WJ Gold and now on the verge of going to the WJC Gold Medal game for 2 straight years (2017, 2018) doesn't come across as flatlining to me...at all.
We’ve medaled twice in the past 5 years at this tournament. Before that we had a 14 tournament streak of medals, including 5 golds in a row. Before we didn’t medal in 1998, we had another streak of 5 golds. That’s a medal in 19 of 20 tournaments including 10 gold medals.
Want to know the last time we only medaled in 2 of 5 tournaments? 1977-1981. The first 5 official world junior tournaments. Playing against the Soviet Union.
World champions? We’ve won the last two but hadn’t placed top 3 in the past 5 and hadn’t won in 7 years before that. Though one can argue that isn’t best on best.
Olympics we have done very well winning 3 of the past 4 but the only reason we didn’t use to do well there’s is because our best players never used to go.
So there is 0 question that we are still #1. We are the best country in the world in hockey. By a lot. But let’s not pretend like that gap hasn’t been closing recently. Because it most certainly has been.
