We are hearing from South Korea that the Gold Medal game might be Russia vs Germany instead of OAR.

The IOC is voting to reinstate Russia to the Olympics on Saturday after they paid a $15,000,000 USD fine - and if the IOC votes yes Russia will be allowed to march in closing ceremonies and play in the game as Russia.

So be it. I saw the womens figure skating ceremony today, and it was just awkward. Alina was gracious, but she stood there watching the Olympic flag being hoisted, and the Olympic anthem being hoisted looking somewhat uncomfortable, and just as if she was waiting for it to be over. Obviously he handlers had prepared her well for it, and she was respectful, but there was no emotion, which took away from the ceremony

Have any of you guys seen the documentary "Icarus" on Netflix? I think its nominated for an Oscar and details the Russian doping scandal. Watched it last night and was blown away.... (not sure if this post is appropriate for this Topic. Admins, your call....)

she'll think twice next time before being a figure skater born in Russia. How dare she

sure, punish and ban the guilty athletes.

From what I understand about this situation, it was a policy that was embraced by the Russian Olympic Committee, the FSB, and a lot of higher ups. This wasn’t a onesy-twosy limited thing. Literally thousands of samples were tampered with.

At that point, you assume that everyone is guilty. It’s unfortunate for the athletes that were clean, but it is what it is. I would have banned them altogether.

This whole thing is all smoke and mirrors. The OAR brought 169 athletes, which is the third largest contingent behind the US and CAN.

And now word is coming out that they will pay a $15m fine in order to be reinstated for the closing ceremonies.

It’s a joke.

Oh, by the way, here’s a link to the story about the latest OAR athlete to be caught doping:

I'm fully supportive of punishing and banning anybody who dopes from any country. For the 167 other clean OAR Olympians, they should be proud of being an Olympic athlete as anyone should be. I don't feel the Olympics should be a platform to shame innocent athletes for the sins of others. I'd say the same thing if you were an Olympic athlete

Innocent or not, those athletes are from a country who had a massive doping program going on from the highest levels.

If the IOC wanted to make a difference they would have banned Russia entirely. Instead, they just took the payoff.

many agree with you I'm sure, but in the end I don't think some innocent athletes getting to wave their flag and hear their anthem will be all that of a big deal. It's a good thing to come out of the Olympics with a positive experience.

You are right, it’s not that big a deal, because the IOC let them off easy.

You really should read up on the doping scandal, you might feel differently. The Russian Olympic program at the highest levels made the decision to give their athletes PED’s and had a plan in place to cover it up. We are talking about thousands of tests.

You appear to be saying, “I’m all about the athlete, it’s not their fault.”

What about all the clean athletes from other countries that missed out on medals because of the Russians cheating?

That’s ok?

take any medal from any athlete who dopes if the evidence suggests it. Same with pro sports in America, strip the 90's yankees of all their titles which were won by the scientists like the ones at Balco.

The evidence is pretty damning, and indicates that number of clean athletes would be significantly smaller than 167.
