Heard it. He was talking about the Gryba buy-out.

Rishaug said something to the effect that the Oilers are in a situation where they are looking to recover cash. It was about making sense of the Gryba buyout.

the buyout still doesn't make sense to me, nor does the cash recovery explanation.
to save $300000 dollars of actual salary, they are willing to hurt the team $300000/year in cap space for 2 years?

The Oilers have $11,928,834 in cap space once Montoya's contract is subtracted (all but $37,500 can be buried), with Nurse and Strome to re-sign.

Nurse, Strome, another top 12 forward, two extra forwards and an extra d-man.

There was absolutely ZERO reason why Chiarelli would buyout Gryba unless he had something in the works for another Defencemen. There must be a reason as to why he would put 300k on the cap for another 2 seasons. If not, well it just shows his ineptitude to actually manage a team in a Salary Cap League.

Why else would you add 300k to the cap for 2 seasons when you could very easily bury him in the Minors for the year.

This. This is your answer, you can stop looking for some sort of "plan" with our moronic GM. Idiot-Chia is the worst GM in the NHL over the past 20 years - he doesn't need to have "reasons" for making a stupid move, that is just what he does: make stupid moves.

300k isn’t a massive killer off the cap, it’s a small percentage. And I think we all can agree that Gryba is useless to us. I’d take the 600k in real money too. Plus maybe we did a good Karma thing for Gryba, we need some Karma heading into this weekend.

I definitely don't disagree, but I also think we need a great PP dman. I don't know enough about Ty Smith to compare him to Boqvist, but I do think Boqvist on his own has elite hands, skating, and a wicked shot, not to mention great vision and puck moving. I would be quite happy if he ended up an Oiler, but it sure is starting to sound like they might pass on him even if he makes it to 10.
Smith is good offensively but all he has for a shot is a good wrister. A defender without a good slap shot, ove noticed struggles to adapt that offense to the nhl.

Katz is probably tired of wasting money on shit players. Maybe the $600K can be used towards a player who will be of use to the NHL roster all season.

This may be true but thats not really the GMs fault imo. All he can do is trust his scouting staff.

Also, I have faith in Keith Gretzky to identify the best player available.

Yeah Keith is a good scout, I'm actually not upset at our drafting the past couple years, I've like our mid to late round picks more than I can remember in recent history.

that's not good business....pennypinching $300K, and OEG laying off employees.
I'm not feeling good karma.

They save 600k total, That’s a lot of money.
Can’t comment on the lay offs. Heard about it but don’t know any details. You?

but now he's wastig $300000 on non-Gryba and 1.3 mill on non-Pouliot, that's 1.6 million dollars on less than "s**t"players.

After watching the NBA draft and seeing Micheal Porter Jr (a top 5 talent no doubt) fall to 14 and Robert Williams (projected 12-14) go 27, I really truly believe that one of Wahlstrom, Hughes, Bouchard, Dobson, or maybe even Tkachuk will be at 10.

I was thinking along this line as well but after doing some research I think its highly unlikely. Very clear cut top 10 with most pundits having Boqvist at 10.

As bad as we need an offensive RD like him or even Smith who plays right... I want Kotkaniemi. Our center prospects are we weak. He can play wing or center. He is very close to nhl ready. Is another solid big talented two way guy with comparisons to Kopitar... Imagine getting another Leon Draisaitl at ten... That would be sick. Even a Leon light would be amazing.

I was talking about a trade scenario with my buddies. Klefbom and the 2019 NYI 3rd back to the Isles for Pulock.

Lou needs value contracts after signing Tavares and most likely trading for Gruby. Klef is just that is still a young top 4 d with upside.

The Oilers get their RH pp dman in Pulock who can produce offensively and on the pp. He will most likely want a 2 or 3 year bridge and if he keeps producing like he did this year, 6 million at the end of that bridge wouldn't be out of the question.

A trade that helps both teams. Thoughts?

they only save $300K as they have to pay out $600K on his $900000 contract.
and then $300K per year against the cap over 2 years.
If I'm reading the buyout rules correctly.

sorry, forgot to mention the layoffs, but no I don't know the details, just heard about it.

Trying to save real dollars on the gryba buyout is laughable. Maybe fire one of the 100 garbage ex oilers on your payroll who don’t contribute to anything if you wanna save money.
Yeah, this one sounds like an incredible reach by the contingent of loyalists.

Vitali Kravtsov and Grigori Denisenko are my wild cards to get into the Top 10, I think Chicago could look at one of them.

Also during interviews at the combine, Ty Smith gave a few scouts the impression that he is going in the top 10.
