Because you would need a lot of injuries before he's even an option. A healthy lineup, he doesn't replace anyone currently playing. An injured lineup, you still have two options on the roster in Backes + Wagner/Kuhlman who go in before he does. He has
zero NHL experience. You can count the amount of AHL games he has on your hands. I'm high on him as a prospect and think he has potential to be a solid NHL player, but I don't think 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs in round 2 against a big/physical Columbus Blue Jackets team is where he gets his first taste.
Also, how does it affect his NHL contract? Does that automatically burn a season? That plays a big part in it as well. I'm not sure of how that works though.
