Canada Red holds on to defeat Canada Black 4-3 after a very spirited final few minutes. Tag Bertuzzi of Canada Black played one shift from the mid point of the second period against Canada Red. He was benched after yet another selfish and untimely penalty, a completely pointless hit to the head with his team behind.

He needs to be tough but smart to be effective, but has a propensity for bad decisions that I really hope maturity will negate as he gets older.

FYI if anyone is interested, looks like the Canada White vs USA semi will be broadcast on TSN, 9 pm eastern.

Would be cool to see a Lafreniere vs Hughes final as a preview of the 2019 draft.
Lafreniere is 2020. Seems most of Hughes best challengers are on his team (Turcotte and Vlasic).

I was going to watch this semi-final after the Leaf game. Not even sure if there is a point now.

That's right. Not much of a point, White can't skate with USA. Red is clearly the best roster from Canada.

This looks like the best USNTDP roster since the 1997s (Matthews, Hanifin, Tkachuk, Werenski, McAvoy, White, Bracco, Roslovic, Tage Thompson, Christian Fischer, Jordan Greenway, Kunin etc.) and may have the talent to be among the best of all time with the 97's. What Hughes has done to start the year is ridiculous.

I'm not sure about that. I don't know most of these players in detail. A few players have stood out to me other than Hughes and Caufield. Players like Beecher, Turcotte, York, Helleson, Vlasic look pretty good, but I can't really see anybody who stands out in a special way other Hughes. It's obviously hard because there is only so many minutes to go around on this team, they'll likely have a lot more ice-time in NCAA/Major Junior. Regardless, the '97 group is still on another level than this group IMO, I don't think I see a Hanifin, Werenski, or Tkachuk yet.

Some of those guys didn't emerge until later on (Notably Tkachuk but guys like Thompson and Kunin were 3rd liners and not highly regarded until college). Beecher, Turcotte and Vlasic all have top 10 pick upside, so it will be interesting to track their development. It feels like only Hughes will get the bump to the U-18's this year (man I'd love to see a Farabee-Hughes-Wahlstrom line at some point).

I don't expect them to be on the same level as the 97's. That was a ridiculous crop. But, I can see it being on par with the 96's and better than the 98's, 99's (isn't hard) and 2000's.

I don't follow junior hockey that much so maybe someone here can reply.

This US team, at least to me seems unstoppable. Skating speed is nothing short of phenomenal, passes are tape to tape, always in the right position and their checking is relentless.

I do know the system in the US puts priority on skating and puck handling. I think more so than up here.

The question is what makes them so successful, is it more that this is an actual team or are their other factors.

Watching this game is like a peewee team playing a midget team.

Canada has 3 teams with no chemistry....US team pratice together all year or almost...

LHJMQ has been weel represented for Canada...cannot wait to see how Parent-Simoneau-Pelleteier-Lafreniere-Ortiz-Ennis devellop

Don't forget Samuel Poulin, and also Barron, who has been one of the key Dmen on red while being 2020 eligible.

But you're right, Canada can't compete with USA at this tournament in general due to lack of familiarity and chemistry compared, toppped off with your pool being split into 3 teams. USA might be missing some key players in years where US guys are playing in CHL, but generally they get most of the top talent on one team practising and playing together for the entire season.

I'm hoping Red has gained some chemistry after 5 games and we don't get a repeat of what happened between these two teams in exhibition (9-1), and rather get a good, close game.

I'm glad i have a Canadian team in each game tomorrow.
Red vs U.S might just be a good game but Canada will need their best game yet to pull it off. Honestly i liked Black to get through early in the tournament but no such luck.
Hope it doesn't snow too much, it's a long haul.

Impressive Czechs managed to leave the terrible group results behind and played like a whole different team in the playoffs. Beating Russia is no joke, they won all their games but the quaterfinal one.
Unfortunate the GWG in the semifinals against Canada Red was so unlucky, with pretty much no time to respond.

What the heck, why isn't the final being played in Fort St. John? The american team didn't get a single game there, not even the final. I want to watch that team, but the stream in the arena where they've played every game sucks. Annoying.

Czech Republic in the group stage - score 4:17 and 0 wins.
Czech Republic in the playoffs - score 8:7 and 2 wins.
I don't know what they did and how they did it, but it worked. First medal since 2006.
Also, Nick Malik is incredible.

Fun (scary) fact: The last medal (also bronze) was won by the 1989 age group, which eventually got relegated at the U18 WJC the following year. Yikes

Malik was incredible for sure. I also really liked the play of Teply. He stood out the most of the Czech forwards tonight. His goal was pretty impressive.
Have to love the heart of this team though. To come back after such a poor showing in round robin. Don't understand how they could have done so bad after watching today's game. I was really impressed in all positions of the ice. Such good composure. Congrats boys.

The US is just embarrassing us.

Even if we had one team in this tournament the US would win easily.

I realize they're an actual team but they win all the face offs, skate much faster and just want to win more than our guys.

The USA probably has close to 30 shots after one, it actually looks like a PP the whole game, its not even funny how lopsided this result is.

Well Canada has fought there way back into it. 3-1 since I started watching post Leafs. Unlikely they come back and win, but good to see some heart. Canada red has some serious talent.

No weaknesses anywhere on that Team USA squad. Their skating was just unbelievable, and they got clutch goaltending once Canada Red threatened to make a game of it, with Rowe making some great saves after a first period that easily could have lulled him to sleep.
