My idea of it being "spectacular" is that I consider McKeown to have very little value at this point. If somehow we were able to boost his value to the point that he is that add that pushes whatever we offer over the edge to be accepted by Sakic, that represents more value than I believe he will ever have.

Sadly I think we're getting close to the point where McKeown is no longer a meaningful factor in the plans for the NHL roster. Not that he couldn't plug a gap or something, but he's pretty close to being Generic Callup #465. I had very high hopes for him when he came here, but he doesn't seem to have progressed much since then.

That's why it's striking to me that he's still included in the prospect tourney... I don't think of him as a prospect anymore, but as a regular AHL'er who's still trying to break in.

Thing is that last year was just his first season in the AHL, much like with Fleury. FAR too early to write him off. It definitely didn't go as well as we had hoped it would, but I also think we've gotten a bit spoiled by what happened with guys like Faulk, Slavin, Pesce, Hanifin, and even to a lesser extent Fleury having the rookie season he did in the AHL. Guys that can do that are far more the exception then the norm, even among guys that become career NHLers.

It's not just that he didn't break in, but from what I've seen and read he hasn't really progressed much either. That's more of a concern than necessarily which team he played for. Future impact players ought to be making significant steps forward at that age. To me, a guy who starts to flatline at 21 has more of a Brett Bellemore "OK, I guess we can give that guy a roster spot if nobody else is stepping up" type of future.

Dellow did a breakdown on defensemen that didn't dominate their 20-year-old season in the AHL.

Very, VERY few of them became NHL regulars or contributors.

If I recall though I thought I was kinda impressed by Roland at training camp last year and that he made it pretty far before getting sent to Charlotte. Unfortunately his season in Charlotte wasn't very good, but it was his first pro season.

I'm not ready to start writing him off yet and calling him the next Brett Bellemore.

Edit: He was the last player assigned Charlotte during training camp.

Also just discovered that he's training with Gary Roberts this summer.

Was no commentary last year but that doesn't necessarily take away from anything.

Last year was the first year they streamed it there but all indications are they are doing it again this year.

I think I remember that last year there was no comentary for all but the last game. The championship game had commentary, but I don't know if that was because we played the host Red Wings team, or because it was the championship. Either way, the commentary was not good.

I'll be curious to see if foxsportsgo is available north of the 49th. Hopefully it is since this is one of their free streams that didn't require a subscription to log in and watch last year.

Were they just Hurricanes games or every teams games streamed? I'm wondering if it's also region locked regardless of login credentials

I guess it really doesn't matter in this case since he's only interested in the Canes now that I go back and read the rest...

IIRC though, people were saying he did look good before getting hurt, albeit a small sample. I hope he trained hard this offseason. The statement from Ulf that he wasn't in good enough shape to start last season was disappointing, but maybe the injury at Traverse City and then missing some of training camp played a role.

That's interesting as when Fleury was in prospects camp he was, to my eyes, the best player there. He'd bulked up significantly, was clearly stronger, showed off his shot some, and generally felt like he'd made a good impression. Then, as you said, he got hurt in the 1st game of the Traverse City tournament (I watched all those games). Up to the point he was hurt, he was again fairly dominant.

That injury appeared to me to be a slight knee sprain, but maybe it was just a bad bruise. I can't even recall if Fleury came to training camp last year. So it goes without saying he clearly missed a nice portion of training at the end of the summer/beginning of the fall. After getting off to a slow start, Fleury picked it up as the season progressed, but Ulf mixed and matched his lines throughout the season and never really had a dedicated #1 or # 2 pairing that I could glean.

Sadly I think we're getting close to the point where McKeown is no longer a meaningful factor in the plans for the NHL roster. Both BP and GMRF made some random comments late last season about McKeown and how they were both pleased with his progression. Not sure what to read into that. GMRF also seems to always mention Roland when he talks about the excellent depth in Charlotte. But then, maybe all of that is a bit of tire pumping for some potential transaction.

will this become the GDT?

edit - and also here's a link to the discord i made last year now that it is a more popular service that people might want to use to talk about stuff outside the warm and safe confines of vbulletin: https://discord.gg/UQr7Qq6
