OT: 2017 Red Sox/MLB - PLAY BALL!!!!!!

After trading for Thornburg and Sale, I'd love it if the Sox found a way to add EE...but I'm not sure if they'll be able to. Just not sure about going after Moreland (which was put out there earlier today).

Dav never ceases to amaze me. But I didn't think it would happen in this off-season, after everything he's said about the payroll and (crowded) rotation.
To be honest, I actually like both deals in terms of value. Trading Shaw for a SU guy was something I thought about for a while. He also sold high on Doubon, so I don't mind him being in the deal.
And Moncada is the best prospect you want to get traded...if that makes sense. Why? Because I think he is currently a bit overrated and doesn't have a clear path to the majors. We also don't know how much of an defensive impact he's going to have and exactly at what position.
Gun to my head between Moncada and Benintendi, I would have also picked Moncada.
Kopech hurts. His pure stuff is ridiculous. He's got the potential to be a top starter...and if "everything goes wrong", he could become a high end RP/CP. His fastball is that good already.
And concerning Sale. You obviously don't love a guy who puts so much stress on his arm. You freak about after every start, especially when you gave up the goods to get him. This is a HUGE gamble by Dombrowski.
The point is: my issues with Dombrowski go deeper and have nothing to do with the value of both of those deals or Sale. He just doesn't give a crap about farm systems and is trying to build a super team just like he tried in Detroit. No chance a GM like Theo would have made all those deals...he wouldn't have made that bad deal for Kimbrel and he certainyl wouldn't have given up Espinoza for Pomeranz.
That's the next issue...why did he go after Pomeranz when he wanted an ACE in Sale? That makes no sense.
WOuldn't you like our team better without Pomeranz on it and one of Kopech/Espinoza (I guess the Wsox would have accepted either one) still being on our farm?
The Pomeranz trade should have been reversed when they had the chance. Now the guy lost an insane amount of his former value. Do you guys think any team would think about trading an Espinoza type of prospect for him? No way!

Did Wright die on 2B at Dodger Stadium? Was Buchholz' option picked up to trade him and take advantage of that thin SP market?
And by the way: I am with DKH on this, I wish JBJ was the other main piece instead of Moncada. This would have been awesome as we would have sold VERY high on Jackie.

The sox have certainly made some splashes the past few years. What ever happened to the Yankees, they seem like they dont care as much about winning anymore or making big moves.

read what the scouts say about Moncada. He projects as a 25/25 guy.
Kopech has an electric arm an in the Sunday notes of the Boston Globe two weeks ago there was some very complimentary words on Diaz; Basabe is an intriguing prospect and has been rated 7th in a still strong Boston lineup.

It looks like the Red Sox will check the oil regularly on him, get needed brake job, and monitor tires but because he is a Boras guy, streaky I can see Boston just running him out there until he leaves getting the best they can out of him. JBJ will eventually be the odd man out here.
Dumbo has traded many of a super strong Farm System but still has some excellent corner guys in Dalbec and Devers at third and my favorite- Sam Travis at first.
With the new CBA the Red Sox are going to not have the advantages they have had in the past which is a good thing for the health of the game. No over slot on later round draft picks, no huge international signings, cap penalties and subsequent loss of draft picks for signing premium FA

Well, you are getting the best prospect in all of baseball. Unless you value Dansby Swanson higher, which I don't. And Kopech is absolutely electric. We're talking about a guy that hit 105 on the gun, but also has some secondary stuff that is still developing but looks like it has the potential to be A level stuff. But Kopech is further away.
Moncada could start for you guys this year if you move Todd Frazier or decide to play him at 2b. He most likely is going to struggle initially if the White Sox decide to let him ride it out. He may start at AAA. His K rate has been super high in the minors, but I think his other tools and power potential don't make that quite as concerning as maybe some other guys. But the sample size is wayyyyy to small to judge. That said, he did look pretty over-matched when he was up with the big team last year. He is literally a physical monster (for a baseball player, anyway) and, although it seems like he's already been on the baseball circuit forever, is still only 21 yo. Many of us were super excited to see him reach his potential here.
Basabe I believe was an international signing from a few years ago who has been rising through the rankings. I admittedly know nothing about Diaz, Basabe I am a bit more familiar with as I have seen him rising our prospect list. Not a ton of pro numbers to go off of as he is still only in A ball. He was on a tear when he got to Advanced A ball but topped out a bit when he got to Salem. Not a ton of power but should get on base. Wish I had more info about him, but I don't.

Moreland is fine but...I want EE. Don't care how much it costs. You went all in on Sale. Keep it going.
White Sox wanted Benny and another roster player and the Sox said no. When you think about it that way then it makes perfect sense to pay out the contract.
Give me Encarnacion and I'm a happy girl.
If they could unload Panda that would be the cherry on top. Pipe dream on that.

Yankees GM Cashman compares the Red Sox to the GS Warriors.

New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman turned to another sport to describe the enormity of the Boston Red Sox's acquisition of All-Star left-hander Chris Sale.
"Boston is the Golden State Warriors of baseball now," Cashman said Tuesday at baseball's winter meetings. "They've got their Durant and Green and Thompson and Curry."
Cashman spoke to New York reporters in a cramped hotel room, while 16 floors down at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, Boston GM Dave Dombrowski had most of the rest of the baseball media listening to his reason for acquiring Sale for a four-prospect package headed by Yoan Moncada.
While Cashman spoke with the White Sox about Sale, he never made a serious run at the lefty, despite the Yankees' need for starting pitching. Cashman's reasoning is the Yankees are not in position to give up their top prospects at this point to add what he described as a finishing piece in Sale.
"It is not a deal that we should be doing at this moment in time, but we're going to get to the point where that is a deal that we will be in play on," Cashman said. "But it is a timing thing."
