2017 Draft Class downgraded from "Weak" to "Terrible"

Dallas 2017 : Heiskanen, Oettinger, Robertson
Dallas 2021 : Johnston, Stankoven

franchise d-man
all-star goaltender
50% of their top 6

pretty good 2 drafts...

also, 2018 : Dellandrea, who has become from hopefully good top 6 player, to very useful bottom 6 player
2019: Thomas Harley, elite top pair defensman

Then there's 2020 Draft C Mavrik Bourque and 2022 Draft RD Christian Kyrou

Looks like a pretty good draft, and the terrible draft talk kinda reeks of OHL/Canadian bias. The best OHLer is Tippett… The top players are a Finn, a Swede, the Swiss Miss, and a smol boy from the AJHL… lots of Finns and Swedes… bad draft. Declare the 6‘2“ Canadian the best of them and don‘t bother scouting the rest.

I recall an article years ago that said the same thing: pre-draft the quality wa largely based on how the OHL prospects were, which correlates as most scouts are in the GTA area and this it's easier to scout that league. Would be interesting to see holds much that holds up to a proper analysis (of pre-draft hype).

Team 2017

Jason Robertson - Elias Pettersson - Robert Thomas
Casey Mittelstadt - Nico Hischier - Martin Necas
Morgan Frost - Nick Suzuki - Owen Tippett
Fabian Zetterlund - Josh Norris - Drake Batherson
Extras: Eeli Tolvanen, Filip Chytil, Michael Rasmussen, Gabe Vilardi

Miro Heiskanen - Cale Makar
Nick Hague - Nick Perbix
Mario Ferraro - Timothy Liljegren
Extras: Erik Brannstrom, Juuso Valimaki, Henri Jokiharju

Jake Oettinger
Jeremy Swayman
Stuart Skinner

Overall - Offensively this draft had pretty good depth. Some Superstars in Robertson and Petterson as well as some good top 6 players. Defensively, you've got two superstars, but poor depth outside of that. Goaltending is actually quite strong.

Draft wInner

Dallas Stars:

Miro Heiskanen - Top 10 defensemen in the NHL.
Jake Oettinger - A glorified #1 goalie
Jason Robertson - A 109 point winger
Jacob Peterson - 83 NHL games as a bottom 6 tweener
Dylan Ferguson - Nhl goalie with three games under his belt

NOT a great draft but from a Canadian perspective...

* Makar is the best D-Man in the world.
* Nick Suzuki is very good.
* Robert Thomas is terrific.
* Stuart Skinner is a top end goalie.

You can make a decent Canadian team out of this draft.

Morgan Frost - Robert Thomas - Owen Tippett
Gabe Vilardi - Nick Suzuki - Drake Batherson
Michael Rasmussen - Morgan Geekie - Morgan Barron
Max Comtois - Cody Glass - Mackenzie Entwhistle
Extras: Nolan Patrick, Jonah Gadjovich, Mason Shaw,

Nick Hague - Cale Makar
Mario Ferraro - Conor Timmins
Pierre-Oliver Joseph - Jonathan Kovacevic
Extras: Jacob Bryson, Cale Fleury, Ian Mitchell

Stuart Skinner
Michael Dipietro
Matthew Villalta

Elias Pettersson, Nick Suzuki, Robert Thomas - franchise C’s.
Heiskanen, Makar - franchise D’s. Makar is a generational talent in term of D.
Robertson - franchise W.
Hischier - 2C and captain.
Oettinger - one of the best (if not the best) U25 goalies.
Mittelstadt, Tippett, Necas, Batherson, Vilardi, Frost, Hague, Norris, Jokiharju, Zetterlund, M. Anderson, Ferraro - very good top-6/top-4

And many enough bottom/depth guys.
Obviously not a greatest draft ever, but of course it’s not terrible or weird.

Lol, what?

Byfield was head and shoulders over Turcotte on the same AHL team. Turcotte might have a Gilbert Brule like career but Byfield could be another Barkov/Kopitar.
Not remotely true. Turcotte was playing just as well, if not better. Got worse situations too. He had never at any point been given the chances to succeed that Byfield had gotten. But I guess you’ve spun your narrative already that he’s a bust so you gotta exclaim your point with boisterous rhetoric.

As a Condors fan during the Woodcroft era I saw a lot of the Reign + Gulls. Byfield, Zegras, Drysdale, Dostal were the most impressive players back then. Turcotte could barely stay on his skates. Lol. Kings fans defended him but I blame draft-pedigree-itis for their blindness.

When I'm wrong, I will admit it. A player like Durzi was too high risk for me but he's carved out a nice NHL career with his skillset.

Well, the stats say otherwise and that’s playing with worse situations too. I don’t think you’ll suggest Byfield was better defensively either.
