So the Wings-Flames brawl was fun.

Flames upset that Kulak got his ass kicked (he was a willing combatant) and perhaps Witkowski took a liberty after knocking Kulak down in the scrap but it didn't seem egregious. As Witkowski is off the ice and starting to head down the tunnel Tkachuk gives him a tap on the back of the leg and all hell breaks loose. At some point Hamonic is on his back in the tunnel getting pummeled by Mantha of all people.

Now Tkachuk shouldn't have received the 5 min major for spearing but he did touch someone that was off the ice so he still should have been removed from the game given the entire situation. So I don't really understand the Flames fans complaint on that. Maybe the penalty call wasn't correct but the end result of him being removed from the game was.

Witkowski should get an automatic 10 game suspension as he was directed off the ice due to his fight, took that direction and then came back onto the ice. If I recall the rule book that is a 10 gamer.

Lack....GG defended Lack and placed the blame solely at the feet of the guys in front of them. Called them out for not having Lack's back (i.e. not putting forth any sort of effort) after he has been working so hard in practice the last month.

Yeah I thought Tkachuk's spearing call was weird too, maybe like you said they weren't REALLY calling for spearing, but just use it to penalize Tkachuk for contacting someone who's already walked off ice?

That was a pretty fun brawl though haha.

Just watched the highlights... sure wish Benning would have tossed some picks + at Anthony Mantha when it was rumoured he'd be available.

Ugh. I wanted *so badly* to trade up for Mantha in 2013. You absolutely never see players with his size/skating/shot combination available outside of the top-5 in the draft, and he was sitting there at #20.

That was the rumoured deal for Edler was it not?

I was expecting the Wings to be bottom 5 bad this year...They've exceeded my expectations so far.

Even then, they're no guarantee, from Beach to Virtanen. Mantha is bigger and handily outscored either of them. Looks like he'll make multiple teams kick themselves. We'd have a completely different future with him next to Pettersson ...

Edler was apparently the main target, but IIRC they wanted to re-coup a pick + some assets after publicly calling him out for a "disappointing" stretch.

Hitting on Mantha and Larkin has definitely helped as those two are driving their offense. Howard has also had a nice bounce back year (out of nowhere...honestly figured he'd be out of the league soon)

Had a quick look at Dallas-Tampa game, Stamkos and his two bros are putting on a show for the 20th time.

When I think about what they will do to this team when we play them, it kinda makes me feel excited.

Eh, 6 pts in 15 games, not sure if that contract is warranted.
I'm thinking the previous 163 games with a 57 point pace had more to do with the contract. His last 4 seasons have been 40, 40, 53, 62 points.

Yep saw that too. Maybe he's just having an off-season.

Still, signing a player at this age with a contract this size based on this kind of performance is a very Benning move.

he gives me hope for virtanen

They play almost nothing alike. Mantha's awareness and IQ actually allow him to be a dynamic player. Virtanen is a blunt instrument compared to Mantha.

One *very* funny thing about Mantha was that Detroit fans have been saying that last year management was trying to force him to be a power forward due to his size (where have we seen this story before), and now that they are starting to accept that he's a skill player who does not need to drop a shoulder on his way to the net or make-board-go-boom-boom to be effective, he's absolutely flourishing. If Mantha was 5'10 it would have been easier for coaching to see that.

Always really interesting watching many organizations trying to micromanage and pigeon hole their developing players into roles they are only suited to based on their height and weight.

yeah what we need is to lose more draft picks in trades

It would definitely be a shame to acquire an incredibly talented young player.

That seems likely to be very bad value through a players age 35 season.

Atkinson was pending UFA so that's really just the market rate they had to cough up. Seven years is tough, but Jarmo is clearly trying to get long contracts to get the AAV's down to keep the team together.

Saw the slash on Gudas.

Let's see what the league does about this, that was pretty flagrant. Surprised they didn't throw him out of the game.

If you mean Gudas' slash to the head of Perreault then he was kicked out of the game. He got 5 and a game, and has been offered an in-person hearing.

That Atkinson contract...his stat line to date:

Code:
Season Age Tm Lg GP G A PTS +/-
2011-12 22 CBJ NHL 27 7 7 14 1
2012-13 23 CBJ NHL 35 9 9 18 9
2013-14 24 CBJ NHL 79 21 19 40 -4
2014-15 25 CBJ NHL 78 22 18 40 -2
2015-16 26 CBJ NHL 81 27 26 53 -8
2016-17 27 CBJ NHL 82 35 27 62 13
2017-18 28 CBJ NHL 15 4 2 6 -1
Career NHL 397 125 108 233 8

Looks very similar to another undersized sniper's numbers through the same age:

Code:
Season Age Lg GP G A PTS +/-
2002-03 20 NHL 28 5 3 8 -4
2003-04 21 NHL 31 9 6 15 1
2005-06 23 NHL 80 26 29 55 -14
2006-07 24 NHL 81 34 46 80 5
2007-08 25 NHL 63 19 28 47 -16
2008-09 26 NHL 81 39 43 82 -2
2009-10 27 NHL 65 26 24 50 7
2010-11 28 NHL 67 19 28 47 2
Career NHL 856 290 330 620 -50

If you'd given MYSTERY PLAYER B the Atkinson contract, right now you'd still be on the hook for a huge cap hit to the end of this season and he'd have given you this production:

Code:
Season Age Lg GP G A PTS +/-
2011-12 29 NHL 66 20 21 41 -10
2012-13 30 NHL 44 13 19 32 -15
2013-14 31 NHL 63 26 19 45 -13
2014-15 32 NHL 68 27 15 42 2
2015-16 33 NHL 42 14 24 38 15
2016-17 34 NHL 61 10 21 31 -9
2017-18 35 NHL 16 3 4 7 1
Career NHL 856 290 330 620 -50

Oof.

Mystery player is left as an exercise to the reader :)

Cool, my mistake.

Probably gonna be 10+ games, that was worse than Keith's slash to Coyle's face.

That's actually pretty good production lol.

But, personally wouldn't have given atkinson that contract. the 28-35 contract is just one of those I'd never do.

Players are smart to set themselves up for it. Horvat did it. He's going to get paaaaaiiidid like Kesler did when his contract expires.
