All of the analysis of roster strength is irrelevant, IMO, because it still assumes the players will give a damn.

Why would they?

Why would MacKinnon, McDavid or Eichel go all out for Team U-23? Against their own countries, no less!

What's in it for them? What are they playing for, the distain of their own country?

Still amazes me that the NHL is choosing to put these kids in that position. It's cruel as well as insulting to the game itself.

If I grew up dreaming that I would represent my country someday, I would not welcome the idea of playing against them. With extreme intensity no less.

This would be so weird it would break cognitive dissonance.

It would be funny if this Team North American U23 team faced Canada in the Final (LOL). The Canadian flag would still be flying in the end, and i honestly do not know what team to cheer for. Just to clarify- i think this idea is a joke. Slovakia and Switzerland should have been the 7th and 8th teams in this tournament. I just do not get the point of having these two "All Star" teams. Imagine if they did this in the Soccer World Cup. The outcry would be unbelievable. Anyways, if this North American team does win this tournament, it would be neat to see both the Canadian and American flags flying together.

It would be also nice to see some of the American players carrying the Canadian flag as well in the end if they do win, since this team will have a lot more Canadian players than American. Some of these good young American players should then be given an option to play for Canada in future tournaments, and fastracked to Canadian Citizenship if they desire to do so; since they get a taste of what is like to play for a technically "Canadian team".

I sincerely hope you're just being ironic here.

That D will get muscled around with ease. I would suggest they bring a guy like Samuel Morin who should have 1 full NHL season under his belt (2015-2016 season) by then. They will need his size, grit, and penalty-killing.

Ekblad, Hamilton and Trouba are all huge and strong as they come. Samuel Morin looked out of place at the WJC this yr.

All these kids are trying to make a name for themselves. They all want to be on their full national teams one day, they all want world wide recognition, they all want to test themselves against the worlds best, they all want to enhance their reputations so they can get better contracts. On top of that they are proud individuals, as well as proud to be Canadian or proud to be American.

The idea of them being short on motivation, is simply not going to be the case for this team. Team Euro maybe but not the U23s.

If 92's were eligible, this team could be competitive. 92 was the last of 3 strong age groups for both Canada and the US:

Seguin
Johansen
Gallagher
Schwartz
Saad
Bjugstad
Coyle
Skinner

The 93 - 94 age groups are not as strong.

Friedman spoke of the possibility of some kind of quota to make sure the numbers of Canadians and Americans are relatively close. Now that makes an already amazing idea even better.

No Canadian kid's reputation will be enhanced by how they played against their country.

If on the off chance that U23 team beat the full Canadian national team you can bet there will be a handfull of players who will have made a name for themselves. Check that, they don't even have to win the game. IF they play well especially against Canada their reputation will skyrocket.

There should be a "World 23 and under"

Forseberg-Zibanejad-Landeskog
Girgensons-Barkov-Kucherov
Nich-Lindholm-Yakupov
Burakovsky-Draisaitl-Hertl

H Lindholm-Larsson
Brodin-Ristolainen
Zadorov-Klefbom

Probably missing some. And haven't looked around.

I think this team will win, they will probably be the most motivate team among other factores that points to them being the winning team.

This is silly....

But here we go:

Drouin - MacKinnon - Galchenyuk
Huberdeau - Monahan - Gaudreau
Eichel - McDavid - Larkin
Duclair - RNH - Domi

Can this team win the whole thing?

Discuss and make your own rosters.

Super team in black colour.

Why would they be most motivated?

For them it is a opportunity, while for the others it is just a farce. If we would put a U15 team in this tournament, you do not think they would be motivated to beat the big stars? Off course this U23 is far better than any U15 team in the world, but the same principal is still there, they are fighting upwards, they have something to prove and everything to win.

Would you want to be known as "the guy who defeated his own country's national team"?

it is a farce for them also as they want to play for their own national teams not an all star team.

Bettman has made this event into a complete joke. I have a feeling that the 2016 tournament will look like a bunch of NHL all star games.

I havent really been following the story much, but what does this do for the NHL involvement in the Olympics?

Nothing. Just speculation which is usually tied to what the speculator wants to believe.

Id define the interested parties as such:

NHL: clearly would rather not have an olympic break and participation. But will do it if they get sufficient concessions from the IOC.

IOC: desperately wants NHL participation but has to walk a fine line of giving in to a pro sports leagues demands.

NHLPA: wants to go but doesn't want participation to be used as a negotiating tool for other issues.

Alex Galchenyuk - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - Ryan Strome
Jonathan Drouin - Connor McDavid - Nathan MacKinnon
Jonathan Huberdeau - Sean Monahan - Marc Scheifele
Brandon Saad - Sean Couturier - Johnny Gaudreau
*Jack Eichel and Boone Jenner

Dougie Hamilton - Aaron Ekblad
Ryan Murray - Jacob Trouba
Morgan Rielly - Seth Jones
*Nathan Beaulieu and Cody Ceci

John Gibson
Malcolm Subban
* Zach Fucale

Because Finland has so many NHL players to spare...
