How did Faulk not make them team?? And how can you possibly leave off Kessel on the big ice? These are 2 of the many omissions on this team.

Yesterday I came home late, plus the time difference and everything, so let me check again:

Tyler Johnson, Kessel, Okposo, Faulk and Shattenkirk aren't on the team, but Dubinsky, Callahan, Jack & Eric Johnson and Niskanen are?

Yeesh, I feel really sorry for the US fans, now they have to live with the decision that Tortorella was named head coach. You can clearly see whose roster this is. Their group seems pretty weak though, so I think they'll be good enough to make the semis, but there I see a good possibility that they bomb out against the winner of group B.

Anyway, I think the lineup could be smth. like this:

Parise - Pavelski - Kane
Pacioretty - Kesler - Wheeler
JVR - Backes - Oshie
Dubinsky - Stepan - Callahan
Abdelkader

Suter - Carlson
McDonagh - Byfuglien
Johnson - Johnson
Niskanen

Quick
Schneider
Bishop

Most likely it won't be like this, but believe me, you want Pavelski & Kane on the same line

Don't know how they can leave Okposo and Leddy off the roster. Bone headed brass.

I was annoyed that Subban wasn't picked for Canada but USA not picking Kessel? Lol, infinitely worse. I would be so pissed if I was following USA. That's just messed up.

[Edit: and they left out Okposo and Shatty? Lol, even more messed up. ]

Niskanen was an absolute monster this season, he earned his spot on the roster.

Okposo is the 4th best US RW, but I could see taking Oshie over him for the 4th line. If they're already not taking Kessel though, I don't know how both Oshie and Callahan go over Okposo.

well they call this one captain america :)

I'm so glad the NHL already ruined any enthusiasm I would have had for this tournament because it's clear those responsible for assembling the team for USA Hockey would have screwed it up anyway.

With my expectation that the NHL will not participate in at least the next two Olympics and most likely screw up any further "World Cup" tournaments we'll probably never see the next wave of talented young American players represent the country in a best on best tournament. I can't even express how disappointing this all is.

I know there's more than "points" to determine a player's value, but how do you figure he's the 4th best RW?

He's 2nd overall for USA in points per game in the past 3 years for eligible players...

http://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/seasons/last-3-nhl-seasons-players-stats.html

Because Kane, Kessel and Wheeler are all clearly better. Kane is obvious, Kessel's points the last two seasons aren't indicative of the player he is and the seasons before that and this playoffs have shown that, as well as his past play for Team USA, and Wheeler is the better all around player and his numbers are essentially the same those three years (.88 to .86 PPG). Plus, Okposo is pretty inconsistent and when he's off he can be really off, and he can seem so disinterested at times.

Technically he'd be after Pavelski as well who's a RW these days, but I'm assuming he'll be playing center in the tournament. The US has a deep RW group.

Do you really think there's going to be physicality in this marketing gimmick tournament? It's a glorified training camp / all star game for these players. Can't see them sacrificing their bodies for an event no one cares about.

You will be extremely surprised then. I've heard this opinions quite a few times and it's absoultely ridiculous. I would bet my entire house that the pre-tournament game between Canada and the USA is gonna be as physical as you can get, full of effort, and sold out.

I see the Americans focused on two way players and not one dimensional guys. Wise choice.

That's mostly what they did in Sochi and it didn't work. I fail to see how it is a wise choice. Then again, you can't expect much wisdom when Burke is part of the management and Tortorella is the coach.

They lost to Canada 0-1 on a freaking tip by Benn, in what should've been actual gold-medal game. Then they lost the bronze meda game, big deal.

Yeah, they got shut out in two medal games. So instead of trying to add more skill and talent, they added more grit. Beyond stupid.

Yanks were badly outplayed, outshot and , except for the first minutes of the first period, generated almost nothing offensively in that 1-0 game...Score shoulda been, but for Quick playing stellar, much worse...then they got their doors blown off AGAIN in the bronze game...albeit with Quick performing poorly

it should be seen as a BIG DEAL for an American A team with golden aspirations going into Sochi...

Now in the World CUP team USA will fall flat on its face again...And its braintrust, or lack thereof, will be exposed -- neigh have already been exposed -- as IDIOTS!

Team USA's most dangerous offensive weapon vs Canada at Sochi was Kessel. The man is a potential game breaker! Nothing more need be said...

2 days later, I still cannot comprehend how this USA team was chosen.

It boggles my mind that you would leave all 3 of: Kessel, Tyler Johnson and Paul Stastny off the team.

I just dont see how this team is going to be able to score. Wheeler, JVR, Patches all look nice on paper, but they are big guys with wheels that take time to get going, contrasted by the aforementioned 3 who can accelerate much quicker. In a tourney that quality wise will be close to 2010, that will be an issue

Stastny does not deserve to be on team USA.

I wouldn't have minded him on the team. He's a center and his play trended up as the season went on. It was probably between he, Backes, and Johnson and since Backes will probably be centering a shut down 4th line he got the nod.
