GDT: 2016 Trade Deadline Day Part II : 3 PM approaches

I'm not particularly excited, but not unhappy with the deadline either.

I never liked Liles, but I've read a lot about him having a good season on here, or that's what I've seen Canes fans saying. Not a savior for our defence by any means, but could be a solid player and help a good bit.

If Clode were to play:

Chara-Krug
Morrow-McQuaid
Liles-Seidenberg

I think that would be a solid three pairings. Only one right handed shot so I'm worried Clode might not be willing to do that and will sit Morrow instead... but I'm gonna give it a chance anyways. A 3rd, 5th and Camara (who is basically a contract dump at this point) ain't much to give up.

Stempniak is a good player and helps our weak RW a lot. Also forces Connolly and Hayes to really fight for keeping their spots in the lineup. Should be good with Bergy, or as a veteran with scoring ability to help out Spooner on the 3rd. 2nd+4th ain't that cheap, but we're getting a better 2nd basically for free for Chiarelli from Edmonton... so let's not act as though our future is being ruined here.

I'm still hoping they can come to an agreement with Eriksson, and maybe if the team has a good playoff run, he'll be more willing to sign as well. Even if he goes to UFA though, we have plenty of prospects and picks that can still be used to get a defenceman in the offseason. Getting some of those assets for Loui would have helped, sure, but we can get something done with what we have right now as well, no doubt about that in my mind.

Are we gonna win the cup? Still very unlikely. But we could very well get to the ECFs at least. And then who knows what happens. Maybe someone else took out the Caps already. Maybe they have injuries. Going even further than that is not impossible, even if unlikely. Most importantly though, the playoff experience should be worth a lot to the kids we have. That, and developing them in a competetive, winning atmosphere is worth a lot more to me than perhaps a late first and a decent prospect we could have got for Eriksson.

At least the second is a 2017 second and not this years.

The 2017 pick may be more valuable than the 2016 2nd. I have no idea how the draft classes shape up compared to each other, but heading into the 2016 draft, all the guys taken in 15 will still be big question marks, by 2017 they will have a better idea what hey have, maybe Carlo and DeBrusk don't progress, and that 2nd could be more...i dunno, accurately? used.

Anyway, very minor quibble

Stempniak is probably gonna be a 50 point guy this year, those cost 2nd rounders. We made 6 picks in the first two rounds this year and have another 4 upcoming. For the love of god stop whining over the team improving at the expense of picks when we have A) brought in 10 guys in the top 2 rounds the last two years and B) are probably gonna recoup some of the lost picks for the rights to Loui if he doesn't resign

Collecting picks are why teams like the Hawks and Kings are so great in this cap era.

So yeah, people have a right to be upset over giving away valuable assets for rentals/depth guys.

No it's not. That have studs at the important positions and they develop there high picks well. We have a ton of prospects and picks. Claude rarely plays them anyways we still have two first again next year

This team is better right now than it was last night. And Sweeney didn't give up anything of significance. Hopefully the locker room settles now that the trade deadline is behind them.

Liles has been skating over 20 minutes per game. Is he a better option than Morrow? Will Clode use him on PP in place of Chara (thus bringing Chara's TOI a tad)? Does Liles play right side or left? If left, this allows Seidenberg to swing over to right side.

Stempniak is an upgrade over Connolly & Hayes. I like that move. I think he'll be playoff Michael Ryder. Below the radar move

Russell is better then Liles and folks here said he stinks. Now folks are going to try and sell Liles here.:shakehead And he shoots left too boot.

I think that 2017 is supposed to be a stronger draft than the one this year.

Instead of Marchand being a casualty to sign Eriksson, maybe it will be Krug (and Seidenberg).

That creates more holes on defense. We need money to add to D, not subtract money from D to add to F.

repeat of draft day when everyone and their uncle wanted to crap on bruin decision making...

I guess its the same as when the former management team dealt joe thornton and let young phenom phil kessel leave over a contract negotiation

history teaches us that whenever possible the masses will want to crap on bruin's hopes and chances

the truth is the team has only 1 cup win for the last 40 years so if you want to bet against them winning a cup you have a damn good chance of winning your bet

my team has missed the playoffs like 3 times or so in the 40 years I have been cheering them... finished under 500 in the regular season roughly the same amount of times. theres not another franchise in the entire nhl that has had that level of success.

theres only around 7-8 teams that have won more cups. people might think its easy to win cups but theres only 7-8 franchises that have won it more than once in the past 40 years.

todays deals don't wow me... but honestly neither did the moves at the draft. the seguin and boychuk and kessel and wheeler and thornton deals didn't wow me. I always understood the 'logic' behind these moves but they weren't specifically deals I proposed or I would have personally made.

we do have 2 trips to the finals in the past decade though... around 9-10 trips to the finals in the 40 years ive been a fan. I am not going to do the math right now but I'm sure weve had more trips to the finals than any other franchise.

we might all feel deprived and crapped upon by this ownership group but I don't think that's fair at all. obviously, they could do things to make Jason happer... but then frank wont like it. joe might have an idea what to do but sam will not like it. and I know what makes Michael happy but I'm sure steven and jack would freak.

the moves we did end up making today make us a better team tonight and next month. that's the entire purpose of deadline day when you are a playoff team. we are a playoff team. we were supposed to make ourselves better. we did make ourselves better.

I'm not wowed... but I understand the logic. Sweeney did his job. now as a fan its my job to get with the program and hope for the best.

Bruins 2016 picks: 2 1sts (SJS), 1 2nd (NYI), 5th (MIN), 6th, 7th.

Dealt away: 2nd-TBL (Connolly);3rd, 5th- CAR (Liles),4th- NJD (Stempniak)

we still have picks and the ones that matter

It is a 2017 2nd rd pick for Stempniak which makes more sense. The B's will keep Edmonton's which is more likely to be higher.

Future:
Heinen
Lauzon
Bjork
Fitzgerald
Donato
Senyshyn
JFK
Gabrielle
Carlo
Zboril
DeBrusk
Vatrano
Acciari
Kuraly
McIntyre/Subban

And I may be forgetting some. You are overreacting.

This is true. Today wasn't a major good day or downer day for boston,. You can argue about loui but its tough to rip a teams heart out as I said last week but was corrected by most the experts on here Don will have no issues doing it.

We'll probably have Edmonton's 2nd in -17 though, I imagine they won't give up theirs this year. That's probably one reason why they were willing to part with their own 2nd for next year.

Russell is better then Liles and folks here said he stinks. Now folks are going to try and sell Liles here.:shakehead And he shoots left too boot.

We need defensive depth, period. Give me any defensive depth and I'll take it.

Clearly the goal is making some noise THIS postseason. Not sure I like it, but if that's the goal, then both of these moves today are fine with me.

I'm fairly confident 90% of the board is too pissed off about the Loui situation at the current time to take any sort of objective stance or give DS any sort of credit. I get it, but just don't expect everyone to cave into the debbie downer attitude.

So after today....this team;

1. Still isn't good enough to win a cup

2. Sent out pieces that could be used to build for the future

3. Didn't move a guy who could have brought back significant pieces toward building for the future

4. Added a mediocre defenseman, that will further gum up the works and give Clode another reason to stunt the development of CM and Morrow.

Sounds very O'Connell-esque.

I just can't believe how they think this roster can make a run.

Chara-Kevan
Krug-McQuaid
Liles-Seids
is still the same nightmare we have seen all season long.

I strongly disagree with the decision to keep Loui, unsigned. I think that's a mistake.

But if you're going to take that gamble then you have to try and improve your team. That is something I do understand. To stand pat and leave them with that glaring vulnerability without making an attempt to improve is too risky to blow up in his face as they enter the toughest part of the schedule and still could miss out.

We get a strong forward who fights

Kind of meh on Liles

But we keep Loui, one of the best forwards on this team

I'm in the minority, but I'm happy. We didn't sell the farm. We will have some entertaining hockey in April (and possibly longer) and still have a very bright future with all of our assets.

How easily forget how hopeless this team looked this spring

I agree. And Sweeney has bought himself 3 more months to sign Loui. If he can't make it work, he still flips him for a pick in June, so worst case scenario we still cash Loui in for;

1.) late round pick 5th or 6th round
2.) major cap dump
3.) better chance at long run of playoff hockey
4.) playoff experience

Not bad for a rental
