Chicago has lost its series against St.Louis, that means Ehrhoff could be available, provided he wants to play. He has no contract for next year, so maybe not.

While he isn't the player he once was, he still would be of great help to the defense.

Justin Krüger and Bernhard Ebner will miss the WC because of injuries,
Gerrit Fauser,Felix Brückmann,Dominik Kahun,Frank Mauer,Daryl Boyle and Yannik Seidenberg will join the roster for the games against Belarus.

Sorry German isn't my thing but can someone translate this? Topic is coaching search.

"Einer von Hunderten von Namen, es geht aber darum, dass Philosophie besser als zuletzt umgesetzt wird (Akademie-Einbindung)..."

Also I honestly believe this could be a playoff team...especially with Ehrhoff and in the weaker division (games like france and Hungary).

"It's one of several names, it's important that we implement philosophies better than before (integration of academies).

There is also the possibility of David Wolf returning to the roster. He was already with the team early on, but then got injured and was supposed to miss three weeks. Sturm said that he hopes that Wolf will return for the later stages of the preliminary games.

For Germany's level, there really seem to be quite a few offensive options available this time around. We really need some good defensemen for the future though, as that area is still severely lacking, especially when we miss two or three.

The future in D doesn't look to bright but there are some internationally experienced defenders who just chose not to play for the national team anymore: Schubert, Sulzer, Holzer, D. Seidenberg.

I hope they return for the Olympic qualifiers.

it's too bad some of those defenders have retired from international play. I think that if two of them would join, Germany could do ok. While Ehrhoff had an ordinary year, I think his presence will be very beneficial. He can probably QB the power play and brings lots of experience. As always, the key will be to win against the weaker teams. I also hope Marco Sturm does well as coach. I liked him as a player and hope he can be a players coach

I don't think that these players actually choose not to play. Seidenberg did that on occasion, but he was also busy most of the time anyway. Holzer last played in 2011, and always made it at least to the second round of the AHL/NHL playoffs every season afterwards, meaning he simply wasn't available since the last time he played.
Sulzer missed some tournaments because of injuries. He did play two games for Germany in 2014/15, but none this year, I don't know why.

Schubert had some sort of fall-out with one of the coaches, don't know which one, and simply hasn't been nominated since. I don't think that he ever publically stated that he wouldn't play for Germany anymore.

The defense is quite solid if everyone we have is actually available, but that's never really the case. Over the last few years there were always three or four defenders missing, sometimes more, leading to some very weak defenses. Even the good DEL-defenders aren't really young anymore, and compared to the offense there is a clear lack of depth.

I think there are a few really promising young defenders coming up. For the DEL level anyway. I' thinking of guys like Konrad Abeltshauser, Jonas Müller, Kai Wissmann, Tim Bender, Fabio Wagner or Simon Schütz. What I don't see are defenders who look likely to make it to the NHL level anytime soon.

I realize that his contact is ending but do you think that Holzer might join the team like Ehrhoff did now that his team is out of playoffs? Germany could have a really solid team this year.

E: I just noticed that the Gulls are still in the playoffs but maybe if they were knocked down by Texas...

Can Holzer even play for the Gulls?
Wasn't there a deadline where he would have had to have been on the Gulls roster or something? If so I am not sure he was.

Sturm recently stated after Ehrhoff agreed to play, that he is not waiting for any other NHL players, except maybe Holzer. So I guess they are not expecting him to play in the AHL playoffs.

Yes, you need to be on the AHL-roster on a certain day (just prior to the trade-deadline?) to be eligible for the playoffs. Which is why you can often see young players being temporarily assigned to the AHL for a day or two even though they already play a decent role on the NHL-roster.

I don't think they ever sent Holzer down. It's not like there would have been much of a benefit. He's not really young anymore, it's better to have young talent play in the AHL than to improve the roster a bit by sending down Holzer. He would have needed to pass waivers again anyway, as he had been on the NHL-roster for more than 30 days since being waived the last time.

I looked through some of the old rosters and I think technically they had 5 in 2008:

Marco Sturm (Boston Bruins) - played 80 NHL games that season
Christoph Schubert (Ottawa Senators) - played 82 NHL games that season
Marcel Goc (San Jose Sharks) - played 51 NHL games that season
Dennis Seidenberg (Carolina Hurricanes) - played 47 NHL games that season
Dimitri Pätzold (San Jose Sharks) - played 3 NHL games that season

Will be a battle between Slovakia, Belarus and GER for the 4th spot of the group.

I don`t think that team USA is so much better than the other three, that they will have a quarterfinalspot for granted.
