I remember being so excited about getting the #1 pick and buying a brand new AM jersey (the jersey design was new for that upcoming season too) before the season started. Then he scored 4 goals in his first game. Finally felt like we were going in the direction of the Penguins / Blackhawks, whom I had watched with much jealousy for the previous decade.

Such a shame what AM has devolved into. There isn't a player on the team now that I dislike more. I haven't worn that jersey in years and likely never will again. Matthews used to be so relentless on the puck, used to work his ass off every shift. Tenacious. Now he's a lazy floater who can't shoot the puck anymore and has been invisible in pretty much every big game scenario he's ever been in. All that money, endorsements and fan worship went straight to his head and it's been all downhill ever since. What an absolute waste.

didn't he score 47 goals and have the most productive post UFA year in like decades or something
Playing with one of the top playmaking wingers in the league, and still only finishing with 88 points. That ain’t worth 11m, 9m sure, not 11m

How am I reading stuff like this after a series where we never scored more than two goals. I bet we could literally lose every game 1-0 and I'll still hear morons talking about how we need to tighten up defensively.
Brodie was a mess
Holl need I say more
Lilly had major hiccups in his game
Gio has run his course

Rielly Schenn McCabe were really good.

We were caught running around in our end way to many times.

But thar is a morons point of view

When Rielly isn't on the ice, there is no organization from the d-zone up the ice. Keeping Sandin would have helped with that.

You need transition from defence to be successful. We don't get that, and we also don't get defence period when rielly/schenn wasn't on.

Liljegren looks like he's busting. The rest you mentioned are finished. What a disgrace of a build for 2023 team.

I disagree with you on mccabe. Had a few nice blocks and hits but looked like typical low IQ mediocre defence we are used to.

Yeah, speak about revisionist history.

If there was a poll asking if we should sign Tavares to that contract, I bet you it'd be 80% yes. Now that we didn't win, it'll be 80% no.

If we're sitting here with the same cap situation but have a Cup or two under our belt because we added a PPG centre for just cap, no one would care.

The problem wasn't Tavares, it was the team underperforming. Keefe also needs to go, he cannot get this team ready. I would try this team with a new coach before I would blow it up.

Washington core couldn't win until they got a new coach... and then they won.
Tavares underperforming the most is the problem

Reg season hes underperformed

Playoffs hes giving us ~55 pt production when hes expected to be a star player.

Hes giving us 5-6M production at 11M caphit

The problem is absolutely Tavares

He never lived up to that 11 million contract even once. We pretend he did in year one, but he got carried to that

He was an 80 point player with the islanders. He played with plumbers and Kyle okposo

He was an 80 point player with Hyman Marner. He was an 80 point player with nylander and other wingers

If he actually got better with his lines mates and produced 90+ points then we could say otherwise. He alone underperformed his contract grossly his entire tenure

He is a huge reason as to all the failure that has come our way. Both contractually and play-wise
Our horrible JT was 16th in goals for centres, 15th in points, up near the top of the league in faceoff%.
32 teams.

Does that make JT a #1 centre on other teams...I think so!!!

11m should get more, much much more. He got destroyed by Panarin the year after. Pietrangalo was much better the year after as well

We got the worse of the three. Best FA to hit the market my ass

The Leafs scored 14 goals in our last 7 games. Get out of here with this "our team is too offensively inclined and can't play defense" nonsense. If there's a criticism of Tavares, it's that he doesn't bring enough offensively

It's the funniest thing about reactions to this playoffs. The consistent problem for the Leafs ahs always been post season scoring.

The more relevant debate is whether it would have been better to have spread JTs caphit on a cheaper 2C + more forward depth.

people on this board are selling Marner for peanuts so which is it is he one of the top play making wingers in the league or is he expendable trash?

He's not just better. He's infinitely better.
No he isn't. He's quantitatively* better.
Draisaitl's agent who no doubt thinks more highly of him than anyone (or at least should present like he does) wouldn't even say infinitely better and would welcome a comparison to Tavares.

Holy f*** you have no comprehension skills

He is expendable, he should garner a return, he must be dealt. That doesn’t mean it should be for peanuts, he just has to be dealt

I can't remember any negative comment here back then when we signed Tavares.
I was one of the very few lone soldiers (might have been a different account)

What about a proper rebuild you all complained about and wanted to cancel your rogers internet for? What about we’re tired of signing other teams’ stars when they will be on the decline and want to draft our own stars? What about let’s draft superstars and have them play on ELC’s instead of sign other team’s superstars to massive contracts? What about all of that?

Yet all these people who incessantly complained about a proper rebuild went completely goo goo f***ing gaga the minute this team had a few half decent prospects and was salivating and orgasming at the mere thought of signing one of Stamkos/Pietrangelo/Stamkos. What happened to wanting a proper rebuild! Oh it’s an “accelerated rebuild now” and I remember people typing stuff like “look, when you get a player of this caliber you never pass on him.” Complete hypocrisy.

This made me realize: Leaf fans do not deserve a rebuild. We just don’t. And we proved it. We don’t have the patience for it. If you can’t stick to your principles even a little you can’t be mad if things don’t work out.

Shoulda traded Bozak and JVR, never sign Marleau, not trade for Boyle, etc etc.

My issue was not the goals against; it really wasn't too, too bad. My issue was the amount of time spent in our end. We spent way too much time running around in our own zone which in turn means we spend less time in the O-zone and thus scoring less goals. Getting boxed in was a huge issue, IMO.

To be fair that is the fall out from too much cap invested in too few players to ice a competitive team around that cap heavy spending.

When you have 3 X $11 mil players produce 1 goal combined in a series then to expect more than 2 goals GF from the supporting cast is unreasonable. IMO

Leafs have 3 of the top 7 highest cap AAV on the same team and also have the least playoff success of all teams in a cap world.
