the more I think about it the more I believe Dean is treading water/biding time until the expansion draft. the draft day will play a big part in shaping the future of this club

If Toffoli puts up another 30G season, he is going to be really expensive, it's why I am glad Lucic didn't get signed.

Would rather Toffoli stay a King.

Toffoli/Pearson coming up.

I believe even at 5 mill per if Dean were to buyout Greene and trade Clifford for picks we would have about 5 million in cap space for next year to resign them. It was definitely doable. Right now i hope we sign Brad Richards on the low and trade Clifford for picks.

Latta and Trotman are underrated signings. Trotman has been a rising defenseman for few years now. I think the Gilbert signing was stupid but see him more to be the 7th defenseman. If Gravel impresses which i think he will if he is given the opportunity and plays a full year then maybe we move Martinez for a long term player like The Carter trade.

The Latta signing is to push Clifford to play better maybe and possibly Shore.

Gaborik-Kopitar-Purcell ( Versteeg would have been better)
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
King-Richards-Brown
Andreoff-Latta/Dowd-Lewis
Shore

Would be one hell of a deep forward group. Purcell can be a stop gap until Kempe is ready next year. Also Richards would help out our powerplay. I know Dean thinks highly of Richards and he signed last year for 2.5 coming off a better season so maybe can be had for 2 million and you move Clifford for picks. Not sure why Dean gave a 4th liner who is expendable a 5 year deal. My personal belief is that they expected Clifford to take bigger strides and replace Kings production but his brain has been smushed and maybe if we didnt rush him he could kd have.

I like their D more. Between Keith-Seabrook, Hjalmarsson-Campbell that's 4 guys that can move the puck.

What happens when Keith or Seabrook get hurt ?

They struggle just like everyone else. There is not a team in the NHL that can afford to lose a top Two or Top Four defender, for any length of time.

Because not every player declines in their 30s and Lucic was a great fit for us. Also Dean gave up a hefty price. I just dont understand why he wouldnt offer 5 mill a year that might have worked. He would be leaving only 2 million on the table.

Toffoli/Pearson coming up.

It doesn't seem to matter how many times this is said.

Brown takes up $6m in cap space, Gaborik takes up $5m, there's no guarantee either one gets taken by Vegas, and nobody knows if Gaborik is going to retire. That, plus Toffoli/Pearson, is why Lucic isn't here. It's why the Kings had to get Boston to retain 50% in the first place.

How many $4m+ or $5m+ wingers can a team pay? If Kopitar wasn't making $10m, maybe throw a few extra dollars at Lucic, but, that's not the case.

Damacles, I know you're trying to stay positive and put out fires here, but do you honestly think the team is closer to contending for a championship after today?

This team is good enough to match the performance of the 2014-15 Kings.

And I wasn't expecting a big splash to be made anyhow. It is what Lombardi has done with this team since summer of 2014 that has led them to where they are today.

We have way too many forwards...

Gaborik, Kopitar, Purcell, Carter, Pearson, Toffoli, Lewis, King, Brown, Mersch, Clifford, Andreoff, Dowd, Nolan, Latta, possibly Shore.

A trade has to be coming. Not saying a big one, just some pieces like King or Clifford being moved.

Only one team gets to win the Cup every year.

If you guys think the 2012/2014 rosters will happen again, you are dreaming.

Those were some dominant rosters with everything going right. The odds of that happening again, are slim to none in our lifetimes.

But the Horses that got a good portion of that done are still Kings. Kopitar/Quick/Doughty. Why not like that ?

Hawks still have Kane/Toews/Keith/Crawford, they are still a threat.

Think of it this way, did the PITT fans think they were cup bound this last season ? I bet a lot of them didn't think so.

It'll never happen again because Toffoli and Pearson were making under $1.5 million combined! Then you had Brown, Gaborik, and Williams making under $10 million combined. And of course Kopitar's cap hit was $3 million lower.

I love Toffoli. I don't want him to go anywhere. But can we keep signing all these big extensions with the cap barely moving?

Its very easy to look back at the cup winning rosters from 2012/2014 and say those teams we stacked, but that's because we are using hindsight. At the time before winning the cup there were plenty of question marks about the roster.

I think Hawk fans would disagree with you.

When Seabrook/Kieth go down, it's bedlam in Hawk country.
If Doughty/Muzzin would go down, the team would struggle in the AHL...
Let me put this way. If either Hjalmarsson/Campbell go down, there would still be 3 bonafide NHL defensman left on the Blackhawks.
If Martinez goes down for the Kings, we turn into Doughty/Muzzin and a lot of pylons...

That is also True,

The 2012 roster especially, cause the core had never won anything.

I don't think that's true, I would disagree with that.

Really, who's gonna play on the 2nd pair (or play the point on 2nd PP/PK unit) if Martinez goes down?

Currently it would probably be McNabb, he is a serviceable Defender, not A-Mart good.

But he is an NHL defender, that can show streaks of playing well. He has done it before playing second pairing minutes. He is just not consistent.

But that doesn't mean someone like Gravel doesn't step up, don't know what he is yet, this season should tell.

The thing that's scares me the most about this team is the tank they pulled after clinching. Amart going down made San Jose more lop sided than it should have been.

I stand firm and think it will be a grind to get in the playoffs.

Once in, they may flip a switch or not.

I like Dowd and Gravel. Maybe Mersch can be that net front presence.

I still think Calgary/Edmonton/Arizona are not going to be push overs.
