I know I'm a little late to the party re schedules but is anybody else wondering WHY Hockey Canada would take one of the more anticipated games for both countries and put it as the first game of the day?

Do they decide the game times by choice/random or does it go by prev tourney standings?

From what I recall (last 3-4 years), it's always been the last game of the day. As a westerner I'm a little peeved as I have to work that day until 2:30pm & the puck drops at 1pm..it's New Years eve tradition to watch live and feels like cheating to pvr.

I was thinking the same thing.

For every other Canadian first-round game (vs Slovakia, Germany, Finland) it's an 8 pm start time

Then on NYE vs USA it's 4 pm! Bizarre.

All the other NYE Canada-USA games in North America (1999, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2012) were all prime time as I recall.

Tivo, and then simply avoid hearing the score. I do it for Rangers, Giants games. Did it for the Olympics.

They'll get way more viewers then having the game in prime time when everyone's on the road to getting smashed and bringing in the new year.

We certainly are gracious and accommodating hosts though, giving up the prime time slot.

I do wish it was the prime time game though... don't like afternoon games.

I dunno, everyone I know goes out after. good stuff on NYE doesn't start until 11ish and if Canada wins we're pretty jubilant.

I find with pvr I fast forward games until I see a score posted..bad I know but sometimes games can just be a bunch of guys skating around/boring. If it's a team dominating, after the 3rd or 4th goal I generally just skip the rest of the game. Live is better (for me).

Discipline. It works. Just have to be patient. Turn off the cell phone, laptop, whatever. Fast forward through commercials, intermissions. Do it a few times, and you'll be hooked. I do it all the time for Rangers and Giants games. Last night, started watching the Rangers game around 8ish. By the time the shootout was over, I was only about 4 minutes behind.

Having the game at 4:00pm on New Years Eve is great. You can watch the game then go out at like 8 o'clock and talk about the big game with friends and get smashed. Having it at 8 or 9 would be crap. You're either staying in and watching it because it is Can/US or you're missing it to hit up a club with friends. Its hard to stay in on New Years for Can/US but I've don't it before! This year I don't have to.

Thats what I am thinking. I was going to have to make the tough decision of whether to go out and party or watch the Canada game. Now I can do both

I think this is the general point everybodys trying to make. :handclap:

I AM SO PUMPED FOR NEW YEARS!! for like the 1st time ever.

I work in Toronto, but spent the last 4 years of school in Mtl, so I will be meeting friends. The plan for New Years:

1. Drive down 30th night
2. Pre-game drinks at Macleans at around 2:30pm
3. Game at 4
4. Relax / get hyped for the night
5. House party

Seems like a better time for a New Years game to me. I'll be able to watch the game and then go out. If they had it at 8 I wouldn't have watched it at all.

Looking forward to the game again. It's on around supper time down here but I can see this getting more viewers as people would still be at home in the afternoon and during the supper hour.

another reason possibly why the game is at 4 is because the Leafs play at 7 that night. Not sure HC or TSN want to share their audience with Sportsnet if they had the game on at 8. Since they start the game at 4, they'll be able to lock in to a max audience in the Toronto market. Guaranteed TSN would lose some viewership going up against a Leaf game.

during the Sweden vs Canada exhibition game tsn clarified that Canada requested the time slot so they could get to Toronto earlier to be well rested for the quarter finals.
