Simply put, who gets your vote for the all-star team

F: Reinhart (CAN)
F: Larkin (US)
F: Petan (CAN)
D: Rafikov (RUS)
D: Forsling (SWE)
G: Godla (SVK)

I really struggled with the 2nd D after Forsling. One of the Swede forwards could definitely make it, McDavid as well depending on how he does in the Final.

Forsling looked terrible today. Otherwise your list is pretty good. I think McDavid has probably passed Reinhart.

The forwards and goalie are cut and dry (the ones you listed), and the defense is a complete crapshoot. I think Forsling would get one just due to points, but I have no idea about the other one.

^^ There is no chance Reinhart gets left off. He's been by far the most consistent Canadian player, let alone forward. McDavid did not have a very strong group stage, which is very important in such a short tournament. If McDavid takes someone's spot, it would probably be Larkin and there would be a clean sweep with Canadian forwards.

I think all the forwards should be Canadians.

F: Petan
F: Reinhart
F: McDavid
D: Forsling
D: Could be any of like 5 guys
G: Fucale/Shestyorkin (Whoever wins gold)

Corey Pronman@coreypronman

My WJC awards ballot: All-Star F Max Domi F Sam Reinhart F William Nylander D Darnell Nurse D Shea Theodore G Denis Godla MVP: Sam Reinhart

I agree with Pronman's selections.

It isn't just about scoring.

Domi and Reinhart were great defensively and the Nurse-Theodore pairing shutdown everyone they faced.

I was thinking about this last night, and I could only come up with 1 lock.

I think Forsling will get one of the D spots just because the sheer number of points he's had.

Goalie I think will be Godla, but if Fucale has a good GMG tonight it'd be hard not to give it to him with the number he's got.

I think at least 2 of the forwards will be Canadian, but I can't figure out which ones.

Domi looked like a lock coming out of the group stage, but he hasn't been as good in the knockout stage.

Reinhart has been solid all tournament, on both sides of the puck.

McDavid and Lazar started off slow but they've been coming on strong with a couple really good games in the QF, and SF.

And Petan as well, who leads the tournament in scoring, and could have had about 8 goals last night.

I think it might come down to who has the better game tonight but the frontrunners as of now are McDavid and Reinhart.

As for the 3rd forward, if it's not a another Canadian I think its between Nylander, Larkin, and a Russian forward who leads his team to gold tonight.

There really hasn't been that one Russian forward stand out to me. A bunch of them have played well, but there's nobody who has me saying, yeah he's one of the best 3 in the tournament.

Larkin is behind the 8 ball with getting a spot losing in the QF, but he had a solid tournament so we'll see.

Nylander, like most of Sweden did not play well last night, but has created a lot in the tournament. Will need a good bronze medal game.

The other D, its down to Morrissey, and Rafikov imo. Whoever wins gold takes it. There hasn't been another standout D, I suppose Aho could get it, but I don't see them filling both spots from a team who didn't even make the GMG. Bowey could get it if he has an amazing game offensively.

My Contenders:

Forwards: McDavid, Lazar, Petan, Domi, Reinhart, Larkin, Nylander, Buchnevich, Barbashev, Sharov
Defence: Forsling, Aho, Morrissey, Rafikov, Bowey
Goalie: Godla, Fucale

My best guess as of right now: Reinhart, McDavid, Nylander, Forsling, Morrissey, Godla

I figure there should be a Russian in there, but I don't know who so I'll leave it at that.

I think you are looking at D scoring too much as a factor.

Guys like Hedman, Klefbom, Suter etc.. have been named because they were great at shutting down the other teams.

The Swedes didn't even make the finals so I don't see Forsling getting on the team. Morrisey and Bowey haven't been the greatest defensively...Bowey especially.

The Nurse-Theodore pairing has faced every teams top line and shut them down and controlled the game.

I think one of those 2 make the team.

I think Forsling is a lock. I mean, sure points and actual defensive play are 2 different things, but when has a defenceman ever doubled all other defencemen in scoring at this tournament? It's very rare. Forsling hasn't been a complete disaster defensively, and has twice as many points as any other d. He should get a spot.

And I don't buy the "he didn't make the final" thing. He made the semis. So did Nylander, so did Godla. Larkin didn't even make the semis. Why should the all star team be all players from the 2 teams in the GMG? It shouldn't, that has 0 bearing. If you had an outstanding tournament and got bronze then you'll be there.

As for Morrissey, or Bowey, I just picked one of them, because I didn't know who else to pick. Nurse could definitely be an option. Honestly if you let me pick 3 guys for that 2nd spot, I'm not sure I'd be confident in a bet at even odds on it being 1 of those 3, it's that open among a bunch of guys, and these picks are sometimes wacky.

Bowey would need an insane game tonight. Morrissey has been fine however imo.

Typically they try to share the wealth a little bit with the all-star selections across a number of teams.

Reinhart deserves a spot ahead of McDavid. Reinhart's been stellar all tournament long in all aspects of the game.

I actually haven't been all that impressed with Bowey.

I'm a bit surprised to see his name brought up.

Exactly.
He leaks as many chances as he creates.

On a weaker WJ team he would be exposed as a liability.

tournament all star team is chosen by media right?

We're in Toronto so might as well mark Nylander down for a forward spot now? Would give the Toronto media something to write about.

And I think Godla just locked up the goalie too.

So Forsling, Nylander, Godla for 3 spots

Reinhart, McDavid for the other 2 forward spots barring something big in the first period(as they have to be in by then?), and again I lost on the 2nd D. It'll be a Canadian or a Russian, but there could be like 6 different guys who could get it.

His decision making leaves a bit to be desired. Things like pinching in at the blueline at the wrong time, shooting into a player's shin pads when passing it off/dumping it into the corner would be a better choice, chasing his check rather than staying in position, etc.

He's a naturally gifted player, but I'm not sure how high end his hockey IQ is.

He's a bit of a high risk, high reward player for sure, but I definitely think he's played well. He's among the defenseman scoring leaders and one of the tourney's plus/minus leaders as well. Not to mention the numerous big hits he's had. Though I'd put Morissey higher on the list for the All-Star team, I wouldn't be surprised if Bowey earns the spot.

I didn't really think about it before but Reway may have played his way on the all star team as well.

If there weren't so many forwards playing amazing for Canada this year this would be easier.

Can we pretend the all star team is on the PP, and just run 4 forwards and 1 D, and put Reway at the point?

My Vote:

F- S.Reinhart
F- N.Petan
F- M.Domi or I.Barbashev or D.Larkin
D- D.Nurse
D- G.Forsling or J.Morrissey
G- D.Godla

Best F: S.Reinhart
Best D: D.Nurse
Best G: D.Godla

MVP: S.Reinhart
