I disagree with this line of thinking. There's tonnes of talent left in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Guryanov, Hintz, Roslovic etc all have top 6 potential. Oilers will need these guys in 4-5 years to fill in the shoes when RNH, Hall, Eberle will likely priced themselves off the team when they hit UFA. We just can't afford to give them 8M each. The reason why Chicago has been successful is they always keep their cupboard fresh.

Guryanov isn't lasting into the 2nd round, and Roslovic is not lasting past the early 2nd=31-36 range IMO. Hintz will but probably only till the end of the 2nd.

Besides that I fully agree try to draft the most skilled and hard working guys there if they have size that is a bonus.

Every year in FA there is guys who had bad years and are 4th and 3rd line fits who end up being steals for fairly cheap so you don't need to specifically chase them in the draft as for the most part those guys don't pan out and struggle in the AHL.

KHL contract. He will be similar to Buchnevich and fall out of the first IMO.

I've said the same thing about Barbashev last year.

It doesn't hurt to have too many top 6 forwards. They hold more value than goalies and they have a better chance off reaching their potential. Worst case, we trade them to fill the holes.

I keep thinking about trading down, I wonder if the Sabres would consider.

To BUF: 16th, 57th and 79th

for

To EDM: 21st, 31st and 51st

Edit: Love that its back, try a grab Samsonov at 21 and then guys who shouldn't have fallen to the 2nd round at 31 and 33

If we could get just the 21st and 31st for 16th and 57th that is a win for us in terms of draft pick value on most draft pick value charts. A recent comparable trade would be the 2012 draft where Calgary traded the 14th overall for 21st and 42nd overall from Buffalo, obviously Buffalo didn't get a kick back 2nd round pick, but the moved up more spots in the 1st round and the 2nd round pick they gave up was of a lesser value then 31st overall. Just dropping 5 spots lower in the 1st round for 26 spots higher in the 2nd round is pretty substantial in this draft.

I'd prefer if we just focus on drafting what we are good at drafting which is skill players, defensemen in the first two rounds, undersized centers, and gritty character players. Anytime we take a dip into drafting coke machines, knuckle draggers, over-agers, goalies, or players from 2nd tier leagues it tends to turn out poorly for us. I'd prefer to trade the 21st overall for Jonathan Bernier rather then gamble on Samsonov.

No doubt if you can get them late take them. I dont want to see us waste picks on players that have no chance of ever making it so if nobody is available in those spots that meets the criteria above then take a player that can make a difference on the bottom two lines. If these guys are so easy to get why have we not had any for years? Playing that type of game takes a younger player, because they are young and cheep teams are not letting them go. You need to be able to draft all positions and roles or you wont be successful. Free agents are just for filling in the odd hole not a cure all.

I know this might sound lazy, but is there a website that has all the draft rankings of these players from different sources. Ex) McKenzie, Button, Pronnan, ISS, McKeens, Hockey News etc....

Some of those you have to pay for, so that's tough, if you just want the top-30/60, the prospect board has a couple threads with most of that information.

Not all, but you can see the rankings for a lot of them on eliteprospects.com. They recently added the final ranks from ISS, FC and Bobby Mac so guys outside the top30 would have their rank shown as well.

Example1: http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=263964

RANKINGS Ranked #16 by Hockeyprospect.com
Ranked #24 by ISS Hockey
Ranked #24 by Future Considerations
Ranked #22 by McKeen's Hockey
Ranked #7 by NHL Central Scouting (EU Skaters)
Ranked #21 by TSN/McKenzie

Example2: http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=92117

RANKINGS Ranked #52 by ISS Hockey
Ranked #71 by Future Considerations
Ranked #14 by NHL Central Scouting (EU Skaters)
Ranked #58 by TSN/McKenzie

I want a Guryanov at age 18 vs Slepyshev @ age 18 comparison.

To me Guryanov is far from a surefire 1st round selection this draft.

I think Marner ends up being the 2nd most productive forward (points wise) of this draft class. He put up incredible numbers this past season.

I definitely see him being #1 most productive of his draft class. In the CHL.

Better than McDavid?

I am a big Marner fan, I think he will slip but end up being a big time player. Eichel and McDavid will be the best, but after that I would take Marner.

If he slips to the 2nd round and the Oilers grab him at #33 I'll be dancing. He's a fast skating 6'3" sniper with maybe the best shot in the draft, and he's been trending upwards.

If you listen to Bob Mckenzie it sounds like there are talent drop offs at #12/13, #20, and #45 and that especially between #21 and #45 there are quite varied opinions on the rankings according to the scouts he surveyed. So he could be there at #33 with the Russian factor but I doubt he gets by St. Louis.
