BBKers,

Maybe add a remark regarding the Yandle trade. The 1st round pick in 2016 is lottery protected. If we miss the play-offs, Arizona gets our 1st round pick in 2017

Just an opinion. I don't think Jesper Fast is going to win the 2nd RW spot. FWIW I think he's a smarter and better schooled player than either Miller or Etem and his wheels are top notch--even so--his MO as a North American pro--he doesn't get enough shots to the net--whether in the AHL or the NHL and if he can't put up at least 150 shots on goal a season he's got no business being on our top two scoring lines. We don't need another playmaking winger when we've got both Stepan and Brassard setting their wings up and Zuccarello besides. We need guys who shoot the puck a lot. Fast does not appear to me to be that guy.

Agreed--I think Fast will play on the 3rd line.

I strongly agree with Fast not shooting nearly enough.

Good point.

Fast does a good job at getting to the net, and you often see him swinging at rebounds or reaching for passes at the far end etc. But, he needs to use his shot more for sure.

Fast intercepts the pass from Glencross.

Fast makes the pass to Kreider. The pass allowed Kreider to skate into the puck and take off.

Fast makes the play to recover the puck in the face-off circle. Yandle to G. Rebound. Stepan scores.

Fast may not be a top 6 forward right now but he is top 9 for sure. AV can throw him up on the 2nd line if needed. The Rangers have him at $950,000 for the next 2 years.

Development is the NHL’s hottest buzzword. The spike in hiring reflects the trend. The Rangers named former Boston University standout Chris Drury as their director of player development on Sept. 4. On the same day, ex-Bruin Rich Peverley was named Dallas’s player development coordinator. Corey Schwab (Arizona) and Brady Robinson (Philadelphia) are two of the goalie coaches hired this summer to work with prospects, not NHL puck-stoppers.

Trades are hard to make because of the cap. Free agency isn’t what it was because teams extend their best players before they reach the market. Developing homegrown players, therefore, is more important than ever.

“It’s almost essential that you constantly have an infusion of youth on entry-level contracts who can push for jobs at the NHL level, especially teams with star power,†said Wilkes-Barre/Scranton coach Mike Sullivan, a player development coach for the Blackhawks last season. “They’re allocating a huge percentage of the salary cap to a few players. It almost requires a certain amount of players on entry-level contracts to fill out the roster. Teams are figuring out the strategy of if we can make sure we draft well, then get our hands on the players as quickly as we can to expedite the development process, it’s going to help us as an organization to sustain a competitive advantage.â€

This is how you win and remain good in the NHL especially with the Canadian dollar trading at 75 cents.

The Rangers have Hayes on the last year of his ELC.They have Miller and Etem signed to cheap one year contracts. They have Fast and Lindberg signed to cheap two year contracts. The Rangers need Buchnevich to come over in the near future. Skjei will play in the near future.

Gorton brought in Drury for player development to assist Adam Graves.

Gorton brought in Greeley to assist him in evaluating the Rangers players and the other players on all levels.

I'm thinking that because there seems to be a New England presence in the room, they are bringing those notable guys in to kind of maybe "help" get the Rangers better contracts.

Ideally the Rangers would be able to move Marc Staal as soon as they deem Skjei ready which I don't suspect will be very long. The problem is the 3 year NMC they just handed to Staal--so how they're going to do that remains to be seen and with Yandle's contract on the horizon for next year--getting him to take less money than he might get signing with the Bruins or a team willing to give him more than the Rangers can afford is another issue. An NMC might be the thing for that so you really wouldn't want to tarnish the idea of that perk in Yandle's eyes and how you go about moving Staal in the first year of his contract with an NMC seems something to me that would have to be handled with an extreme amount of delicacy.

To me within the year--one or the other> either Staal will be gone or Yandle will be gone---because of Skjei--because he's ready and he'll be cap friendly.

I hope Yandle doesn't bail. He's a damn good commodity on our team because of his skills and were sorely lack that sort of movement skill on the back end.

Since fast has such a solid defensive presence:

Kreider-Stepan-Miller
nash-brassard-zuccarello
Etem-Hayed-Fast
Stalberg-Moore-Stoll
Lindberg

Contract speaking, that makes the most sense to me.

If the Rangers don't have Yandle re-signed by the trade deadline in March I think the Rangers have to very seriously consider moving Yandle. If they haven't reached a financial agreement by then it's a very strong likelihood he's going on the UFA market on July 1 at which point we'll have given the Coyotes and a 1st for a guy we can't hang on to. July 1st the $'s go up for Yandle. Unrestricted free agency isn't an auction for everybody but it will be a highest bidder thing for him. If he hasn't signed by the deadline--we have to cut bait and get the best deal we can for him.

If Yandle does sign--the day he signs then the Rangers have the Staal/Skjei conundrum. How ready is Skjei at that point and how to go about moving Staal. A smaller possibility is moving Skjei but like RB says the Rangers need younger players and cap friendly contracts. Good chance that Staal finishes out 15-16 on the Rangers and barring injury to our left side D--Skjei is in Hartford the entire season. Almost imperative however that Skjei if he progresses anywhere near expectations is a New York Ranger in 16-17.

The thing is how Yandle fits in the way we think and hope he will and whether he re-signs with the team.

Hahaha Skjei Moving? he's the rangers top prospect and rangers need to build the farm up, not continue to move out any, especially key prospects. Skjei has no impact on staal or vice versa.. Skeji needs to develop.

1- If Yandle doesn't resign (which I think he does), NYR will still get a kings ransom from a team trying to make a run in the POs.. they will easily recoup a 1st and top prospect or top young player on ELC.

2- I do think this trade deadline you will see Girardi possibly move for a top 6 forward.. Look at it as similar to when rosival was trading with years left on his deal. but this has a lot to do if they feel skjei is ready, mcIrath or Diaz can handle an every day role in bottom pairing.

Girardi is the second least likely defenseman to be moved after McD. What does Skjei have to do with Girardi? He plays the left side.

This must be a McDonagh can play the rights side post---because asking 20+ tough minutes against prime competition from Klein and the almost 40 year old Boyle is asking way too much. Trading Girardi at this point in time would decimate the right side of our defense-----that is unless McDonagh could do it--the question then becomes at what cost to McDonagh?

1. Does he get injured again?--both shoulder injuries Burrows and Kane came in the right defensive corner.
2. Will his two way game become more like a one way game?--something I think is very possible if such a move were made.

Personally I wouldn't do it. As much as possible you employ players to their strengths and especially the better the player. McDonagh on the right side is not playing to his strengths. McDonagh on the left side is.

As for Diaz and McIlrath. It's enough that McIlrath makes the jump. He will almost probably have to be sheltered a bit. Diaz is nothing special. Giving regular minutes to either our defense takes a hit as it is.

Finally there is Girardi's NMC. Boyle has an NMC as well--so why not him? The most easily tradable player is Kevin Klein if McIlrath can make the jump. If anyone were to move from our right side D anytime soon by far the most likely is Klein.

2016 DRAFT PICKS
  • 2nd round NYR
  • 3rd round NYR
  • 4th round from Arizona
  • 5th round NYR
  • 6th round NYR
  • 7th round NYR

  • We lost our 1st round pick to Arizona in the trade for Keith Yandle - this pick is lottery protected meaning that if NYR miss the 2016 playoffs the pick is deferred to 2017
  • We then also gained a 4th round pick from Arizona
  • We traded our 4th in 2015 to San Jose for James Sheppard

2017 DRAFT PICKS
  • 1st round NYR
  • 2nd round NYR
  • 3rd round NYR
  • 4th round NYR
  • 5th round NYR
  • 7th round NYR

  • We lost our 6th round pick to Nashville in the trade for Magnus Hellberg

This is great, just a heads up that Giibons and Adam were drafted by the same exact pick.

Is Huska really at Dynamo Moscova?

Should we be concerned that Skjei doesn't appear to be very effective in TC? Didn't watch much of the Packs playoffs but his numbers were really nothing to write home about and now he's been quiet in a tournament he should be dominant in. Lots of talk about how he's ready or will be this year, but I'm not sure what it's all based on. What am I missing? I get that he has a nice skill set, but why doesn't it appear to be accomplishing much?
