So they're gunna meet at like 6?

Hopefully they do 1 year

They can make Stepan eat $6 per year if they give him a two year contract while he's still an RFA, and then he'll be a UFA who can either destroy us financially or leave.

They should give him $750 more annually and sign him to a long-term 6+ year contract.

They actually have 4 days to reach a deal--it can happen any time before the decision is announced (which is 48 hours after the hearing on Monday).

Probably will be harder to come to a long-term deal after Rangers present their case for their ask. Those hearings have been known to get testy, personal, causing lasting acrimony.

Good thing both sides know this is a business, and aren't alarmists like yourself.

I liked Sean Avery a lot when he was here but people should keep in mind he got ripped by Sather because he was a third liner who wanted $4 mil per year for a few years when the cap was at $50 some million. I don't blame Sean for asking for it but Sather was right not to give it to him--even if the Dallas Stars did. Later when the Stars traded him back to us they covered half his salary and Sather got him for the amount he was willing to pay him in the first place.

The arbitration hearing for Zherdev when the Rangers walked away from him. Zherdev was really really good for the first half of the one season he played with the Rangers but then he kind of disappeared for the rest of the year and all the playoffs. Then he wanted a lot of money--a lot more than he deserved. Sayo-****ing-nara.

I seriously doubt Gorton is going to go to town by seriously shredding a player the team would be happy to give $6 mil per year to. Would you?

At the risk of sounding alarmist, Ill post a few links about how arbitration hearings spoil the relationships between players and orgs.

I could go on, but you'll probably get the point. A quote from link #2 in case you don't feel like reading:

"there have been a few instances in which the hearing itself has taken center stage in the player-club relationship. Doug Gilmour's acrimonious departure from Calgary stemmed from bad feelings brought on by the arbitration process. Tommy Salo (best known for allowing a bizarre goal that eliminated Sweden at the 2002 Olympics) and former Islanders GM Mike Milbury (best known for climbing into the crowd and beating a fan with a shoe) combined for an arbitration hearing so intense that several reporters saw Salo head to the bathroom in tears afterwards."

I consider Gilmour and Salo professionals. Maybe not Milbury.

Wow. Im not Zuccarello, and even I want to respond '**** you' after reading that. Dale Weise as a comparable? Not valuable to the organization? Not a fan favorite?

Haha oh wow that is rough.

I assume most of these arbitration documents go like this, to the tune of "You know... he's not that great, here are his many many weaknesses"

It's game, of course they're going to use every tactic available to try and win the arb hearing, including downplaying the significance of a player's impact on the team, in every way.

Is it ******? Yeah, but the players should realize it's not personal. Especially when the player's agents are using every dirty trick in their book to get the player more money.

Who was it then that had a hearing and it turned nasty?

For what it's worth, here's the team brief with Zucc: http://www.law.utoronto.ca/utfl_file/count/users/travascioc/CLUB BRIEF - ZUCCARELLO -TEAM 16.pdf

Is this brief for real?--because it is so full of blunders that it's really ****ing embarrassing to read.

For instance in the introduction Zuccarello is referenced as a defenseman.

In the next section he's back to being a forward.

Then the math on the stats for games played is off by one. WTF--can't ****ing add? Who writes this ****?

Then he's compared to three other defensemen?

Trevor Lewis--who is not a defenseman even though this says he is and who has never played for the New Jersey Devils.

Dale Weise--who is not a defenseman--even though this says he is.

T. J. Galiardi--who is not a defenseman--even though this says he is.

FWIW the Rangers were probably a bit miffed to be taken to arbitration by a player who still had a lot to prove at the point he was in his career. He had not as of that time found a real niche on the team and had been back and forth to the minors a lot. 68 NHL regular season and 13 NHL playoff games after three seasons--hardly surprising that the Rangers wouldn't want to break the bank for him.

If that brief is real though--all I can say is WTF!

lawyers write the briefs. Probably don't even watch the sport.

Even if that brief is real, which I have doubts about, it really ruined Zuccarello's relationship with the Rangers. I dont know how either side pulled themselves together for a 4 year deal

Toronto lawyers?--don't watch hockey these days? Where do they live? In an underground bunker? Toronto and Ontario = hockey like the Mecca in Saudi Arabia = desert based religions. This is laughably bad. And you would think that both the Rangers and the NHL would review it before and after the fact and not allow it to be on file in such a ****ed up manner for people like us to look at--if for no other reason than they don't want to look like idiots.

I didn't post the brief link, I cant vouch for its authenticity. My point was that arbitration hearings are necessarily contentious and can quickly sour relationships. I posted links about how arbitration hearings have affected player relationships, specifically Salo and Gilmour.

Guys, the arbitration article is a college writing class/project.

It is signed on the bottom "team 16". It is from UToronto. This type of stuff wouldn't be published online. It explains the errors and lack of knowledge. Someone wrote this with 2 hours to go before a deadline.

But not Zuccarello, and countless others.

Thank you. My faith in the legal profession is somewhat restored.

I assume that the brief the Rangers just presented is given to Stepan and his agent--isn't the damage already done?

And as others have pointed out--it's a business; when you have contract negositations with your employer I think you have to expect a certain amount of crap getting thrown at you. Stepan has been through this before, I expect him to survive the experience.

I cant believe such an innocuous observation would lead to such a contrived and meaningless argument. I said we run a risk by letting it get to the hearing. I didn't say it would impossible to sign him afterwards. Just more difficult. This isn't a controversial belief, I guess unless you post it on this board.

Yes the agents try to sell their client as the next Wayne gretzky but with a higher upside.. the team tries to sell that the player is walking garbage and the only reason why he is getting a contract is a cruel joke or by some result of a makeawish show

That Zucc brief was hard to read. Not only were there factual errors such as position played, but some of the "rationale" is completely misguided. My only hope is that this was written by a high school student somewhere because if it's from anything higher, then that person is just a moron....
