Müller is injured and won't be available.

Bertschy is recovering from an injury and if possible he'll join the team later.

Good to know about Bertschy, I would love to see him get a shot. I also wonder why Pestoni wasn't called, it's not like there are that many options for top six wingers. On the other hand, the two Bern wingers are surprise calls, although Rüfenacht can certainly get some consideration if one of Bieber or Walker gets injured, but Scherwey has never been that convincing with the national team and there are many more interesting options for that role still playing for Davos or ZSC (Wieser, Künzle, Baltisberger...). It's also unexpected that no goalie was called, even though Mayer didn't show much this season, I can't remember Switzerland having only two for the 2nd week of training camp. Hopefully Berra can join for the games against Denmark. Romy, Kukan, Blum and Loeffel are very welcomed additions, C and D needed some depth.

Regarding the cuts, I thought Lemm and Kamerzin would get a better look and expected Sannitz, Leeger or Helbling to go before them, but we are not talking about WC caliber player anyway.

And sad news for Plüss. Although I could see it coming, he would still have been good enough to help the team. Now Seger and Streit are the last players left from the late 70's generation.

if Halifax gets out early in the PO's, I wouldn't be surprised if Meier gets a call... and gets close to the final roster. He could get the Nino treatment as he is physically already well-built.

Pestoni not being on the roster is really a surprise to me too, as I think he's a step further in development than Martschini.

and that AdC can afford to let Hofmann play 13th forward through half the POs just shows the incredible depth in their roster where any swiss forward has at least borderline NT-potential... even if he still plays like a junior from time to time his skill-set is so electrifying and could work an WC-level too... and Simion and Corvi are 2 other guys that could be considered in the next few years too, both have a very nice skill-set.

Geering is definitely the best swiss defender for the last 5 years without any WC-experience, his defensive intelligence is among the very best in Switzerland ând he got the wheels to clear the zone with the puck on his stick too.

in general this years d-line-up seems to turn out pretty small once again. this probably will chance in future as there are a lot of taller young players (Josi, Sbisa, Kukan, Marti, Rathgeb..) and the amount of giant sized prospects in the generation 93-97born has exploded... of course beside Mueller they aren't elite prospects (yet) and as in general tall D-Men need more time to develop we can hope that a few of them will turn out pretty well. I mean guys like Antonietti, Montadon, Paschoud, Jelovac, Haas, Kindschi, Harlacher, Fontana, Chuard, Heldner usw. Ther's some hope...

We all knew that this time will come. This generation has postponed it's end further and further. what a great bunch of players they were (and some still are). Rüthemann, Vauclair, von ARx, Jeannin, Plüss, Gardner, Seger, Streit...

Christoph Bertschy added to the roster, he'll join the team and start training step by step.

Calgary either out of the playoffs or facing Vancouver in the first round, so there will be at least one more NHL defenseman available.

Tonight's lineup, brought to you live from the warm up!

Manzato

Grossman - Loeffel
Kukan - Blum
Schlumpf - Genazzi
Leeger - Helbling

Hollenstein - Romy -Brunner
Rüfenacht - Almond - Suri
Bodenmann - Haas - Bieber
Scherwey - Sannitz -Walker
Martschini

Not dressed: Froidevaux, Herzog

Strong game again, should have been a win without two third period defensive blunders (giving away a two on one in the slot right after a faceoff and having four players deep in the offensive zone while protecting a lead with less than two minutes left) and a needless penalty. Good special teams, although the PK is probably a bit too aggressive, and excellent forechecking which gave a lot of trouble to the Russian defence.

Manzato had a strong game again, although his rebound control wasn't as good as last week. On defense, the top four performed very well. Grossmann was the best defenseman, Loeffel helped create a lot on offense, but he didn't look too good on Russia's 2nd goal, Kukan played a simple but very steady game, and Blum had some nice rushes forward. On the other hand, not a great game by the bottom four. Schlumpf was ok, but definitely not as good as last year, Genazzi wasn't as noticeable as against Finland and the 3rd goal is on him, I didn't notice Leeger much and Helbling.... let's just say that at least he was good at giving the PK units some practice time.

On offense, the top line was the only one who reguarly created chances, while the others got their opportunities mostly through grinding and crashing the net. The fourth line had a very good game, Walker was maybe the best Swiss forward, and I was positively surprised by Sannitz and Scherwey. Suri was excellent and was responsible for most of his line's chances, but Almond and Rüfenacht's contribution were pretty much limited to grinding. Haas had a very nice game once again, but his linemates didn't help him much and he's not good enough to elevate the play of his entire line like Suri. Martschini didn't get much ice time, but did very well when used.

My overall impression is that this team really needs at least four defensemen and two creative forwards.

I was impressed by Haas. Not sure if he s ready but he could be a very good international player if he carries on this way. His skating reminds me Taylor Hall.

With Streit, Blindenbacher, Du Bois and one of Diaz, Weber and/or Sbisa the D would look quite solid.

I'm not sold on Du Bois, I always thought he had trouble handling the speed of the international game. I guess he'd by fine as an 8th defenseman, but I'd still take Seger above him.

Are there more information about Streit? I don't think it's a done deal yet.

Oh, I forgot Seger. He deserves to be there and is still a good choice.

There is a link somewhere in this thread where Streit is quoted that he'd like to play. We'll see when the regular season is over.

Not much more to take from the 2nd Russia game. Russia didn't use Zaripov, their best forward on Wednesday, and Switzerland balanced the defense by scratching Blum and having Helbling play with Grossmann. The result was a lot less scoring opportunities for Russia, their two goals coming from a lucky bounce and a goalie mistake.

On offense, the only change in the lineup was that Brunner wasn't dressed and Martschini took his spot with Herzog an unused 13th forward. Froidevaux was still scratched. Once again, impressive game by the 4th line, but on the other hand Romy and Hollenstein couldn't create as much as they did in the first game. Not much change in the play of the 2nd and 3rd lines.

Overall, the biggest thing to take from this 2nd week is that the defense is hugely improved, and that the best players against Finland also were the most noticeable against Russia, especially Hollenstein, Suri and Walker. On the downside, Martschini has failed to convince he was a lock to make the team, and I expected more from Almond. I also hope that Bieber will be put back on the fourth line, even though Scherwey does fine there, as he's at his best with Walker and shouldn't get a more prominent role at the WC anyway.

As I doubt that Hanlon wouldn't give any rest to the ZSC and Davos players, Berra and Streit are the only possible additions for the games against Denmark, which means probably no goalie or defenseman cut. I guess a forward could leave if Bertschy is fit to play.

Edit: As I wrote this, Herzog announced as the only cut.

Damien Brunner is injured and won't play this week, he hopes to be back next week.

Same thing for Du Bois who will decide at the end of the week if he can follow the call of Glen Hanlon. He has a shoulder injury.

This Brunner thing is worrying. It doesn't sound too bad, but it reminds me of the Romy situation in 2013 (of course in the end things didn't turn too bad back then ;)).

Still nothing about Streit and Berra.

Mark Streit is already back in Switzerland, I think this is a strong sign that he'll join the team next week.

Hopefully you're right. Usually the first NHL players are already announced at this point. Josi and Brunner even played in the 5th preparation game last year.

I don't see any reason to start him over Flüeler or Genoni...

Better national team performances. There's a reason why Berra started six out of seven games last year.

Give me Berra when the goalie needs to steal the game and Genoni when the goalie shouldn't cost the team the game.
