Ya, I was surprised when I saw the lineup last night and thrilled that he netted a pair. I still think it is unlikely he goes and he does have a get out of jail free card...but who knows, maybe the allure of Prague in the springtime, beautiful girls and great tasting beer is enough for him to give it a go. What rich 23 year old male can turn that down?

Lots. We'll see what he does, but I'm still quite doubtful. The pieces are there for a good group of forwards just out of the teams currently out of the playoffs. Seguin, Benn, Johansen, Duchene, Giroux and so on. The only thing is how many will actually go? I only expect Duchene (seems to like going, might want to go for some success after a disappointing season) and Johansen (emerging star, hasn't represented Canada at the senior level and has no real excuse not to go) to play, but you never know.

If he goes for those reasons, do you really want him there?

whatever motivates some young, elite level "A listers" into going, then I really don't care what their motivating factors are... And if that's what motivates a player like Seguin into going, then I'd prefer that than a player like Brayden Schenn going for strictly hockey and a high level of competition

b/c that approach hasn't really produced a whole lot of acceptable results over the past 5 years.

I'm open to giving anything a try...

The fact that the tournamet is in Prague is a good thing to mention. I think the last championships in 2004 was quite successful (for the fans overall) and Canada also won gold (with Bouwmeester, Smyth, S.Niedermayer, Heatley, or Luongo in the roster). Besides that, the city is attractive and quite popular for tourists, which could definitely be a plus side even for the players...who knows.

If LA misses the playoff, we'd have a lot of other players possibly coming. Toffoli, Pearson, Williams, Muzzin, and maybe Doughty or Carter. Same with the Sharks, they got Marleau and Thornton if these guys want to play for Canada which might be their last time. Couture, Burns and Vlasic would be really solid aswell.

I think Canada will make it to semifinal this year atleast there have been enough close losses in quarter's in a row propably will make it to final even win gold...

If San Jose and Los Angeles are out, I expect maybe 6-8 players from those teams, at least. Yes, this is an optimistic expectation, but why not? Pearson, Toffoli, Carter, Doughty, Muzzin, Vlasic, Burns, and Couture. Especially that defence would be awesome.

Isn't Pearson on the IR, not expected back until close to the POs? In the event L.A. misses (unlikely) I doubt he'll accept an invite and risk further injury to that foot. But Toffolli? giddy up. Obviously I'd love for a few of those Olympians to answer the call, but I'm not counting on it.

yeah pearson is still injured

Why not add a few Canadians playing in Europe?

Nigel Dawes and Dustin Boyd are playing excellent in Barys Astana in the KHL and Pierre-Marc Bouchard seems to be doing great in Zug in Switzerland

I agree. Instead of taking 3rd line players from the NHL Team Canada should try taking some Canadians playing in Europe instead. Especially on defense. I found our D to be very slow on the big ice last year.

I hope Hockey Canada goes in this direction for a change. What do they have to lose?

whoever hockey canada invites will depend on who has past international experience and people who are not playing in playoffs.
I think they should try and invite some younger dman and one or two veteran dman.

I really, really hope that a large contingent of Canadian players who aren't in the playoffs actually decide to go. I know very few care about this tournament but I'd like to see Canada give this one a good go of it.

The best goalies available will likely be Luongo and Mason. Hopefully at least one of those two go.

In terms of defensemen, looks like all the best of the best will be in the playoffs (Doughty, Weber, Subban, Keith, Pietrangelo, Letang). If the Flames don't make it, it would be cool if the Giordano (if he's healthy)-Brodie pairing could go. Ditto for Vlasic and Burns if the Sharks don't make it. Campbell and Ekblad as well if the Panthers don't make it.

There are a ton of good options for forwards, including Seguin, Benn and Spezza from the Stars, Giroux from the Flyers, Johansen from the Blue Jackets and Eric and Jordan Staal from the Hurricanes.

They've already be doing that though. That is why I would like them to try some of these Canadians who are playing in Europe/KHL.

Calgary still defying expectations... at this point, they may even win a round. So, no point in expecting any of Calgary's players to make the trek to Europe. I would say it's a shame, but I'm actually looking forward to watching Monahan and Co. play some outstanding NHL playoff hockey. giddy up.

if colorado don't make the playoffs or are elimated early i think matt duchene deserves a chance to play for team canada. He went to the olympics last year but didn't get to play much cause he was a extra forward.

Since Winnipeg dropped out of a wild card spot with last night's loss. An updated roster:

J BENN T SEGUIN C GIROUX
L COUTOUR M DUCHENE R JOHANSON
A LADD B LITTLE J EBERLE
M HOFFMAM K TURRIS W SIMMONDS

S COUTURIER

M.E. VLACIC B BURNS
M METHOT T BARRIE
B CAMPBELL A EKBLAD
M RIELLY

S MASON
M HUTCHINSON
A HAMMOND

But we'll probably get more of something like this:

J HUBERDEAU RNH J EBERLE
M HOFFMAN K TURRIS M STONE
J SKINNER A HENRIQUE S BERNIER
M MOULSON T ENNIS C HODGSON

E GELINAS T BARRIE
D SEVERSON T MYERS or J SCHULTZ (Good grief more Oilers)
M RIELLY A EKBLAD
K CONNAUTON

And the 3 goalies doesn't matter who as there's another 1/4 final exit. And I'm especially praying to the baby jesus that the Schenn bros stay home.

That feels spookily accurate to me.

I actually like the Ottawa line. I'm not sure of Stone's skating on big ice, but he could be decent in front of the net on the PP. He has the IQ, but just not the wheels. Other than that, I'm giving this tournament 1 last chance.. if it is anything like we have seen over the past 5 years, then this tournament goes into the ignore list just like Bettman's World Cup nonsense. Not even worth watching as an early afternoon warm up to that evening's NHL playoff action.

I don't think you want to see Gelinas defend on the big ice.

I can usually take enjoyment in at least seeing the best young players in action. For example, I enjoyed the losing teams in the early 2010s that featured Tavares, Duchene and company. The games can provide entertainment as well provided the reffing is adequate. I just want to see good players participate. Last year was the worst for me.

I don't particularly want to see it and I wasn't suggesting it as my preferred lineup for this year's Skodas....just as an example of the roster invites (those who accepted) that have so disappointed me over the past 5 years....and if that trend continues, then that's the roster we'll see (or a reasonable facsimile) in a few months.

edit* I should clarify, that out of those 5 years, only 1 year did I actually like the roster...thought it was a decent team, but results were the same. so, who knows really. select all players, an entire roster, from European leagues. that maybe would be entertaining.
