they got rid of baseball because cuba was too dominant at it, the only country to get medals in all five games that baseball was in.

also because mlb didn't participate.

I want dog sledding, or at least skijoring (skiing w/ two or three Siberian huskies on a harness) at the Olympics. But, I'd want the dogs to get medals, too. At least the lead one.

If there are other sports with more competition than women's ice hockey (which there obviously are, albeit mainly men's sports), it makes little sense to keep one and not include the others.

Women's Ice Hockey has come such a long way. Even though there are blowouts and Canada/USA are head and shoulders above everyone else, I see some young women from other countries with great talent. The twist is right now they are few and far between, leaving them with little depth. In time, the gap will narrow and I'm sure we'll see what we see in men's hockey.
I'm a bit north of 50 and I recall when there were but two men's hockey super powers...

Dear Zdeno, please try really hard not to crush Krejci either with your devastating slap shot or on the glass.

Hoping for a good game between the two.

Hoping for a good game between the two.

I would say less than 10% Chara knocks Krejci out for season- he might miss a few games or weeks but if Chara goes out of his way to slam DK he'll probably hold back a bit

In all seriousness I do expect Z to get physical with him

I doubt they'll be out at the same time unless it's special teams but knowing the rivalry between the two countries, I get a smidge nervous.

Hoping Norway upsets the Russians. Putin's reaction alone would be popcorn worthy.

It'll be interesting to see which one of the Czechs or Slovakia finally wakes up. My money is on Slovakia. Can't see either one beating the US though.

Really? I'd of said the Czechs. They've been a little bit better than the Slovaks. Last game I watched the Slovaks were really awful, hopeless offensively, and Z doesn't have a whole lot to work w/ on the back end. But agree, I don't see either beating the US the way they're playing. It's pretty much going to come down to which one of these squads really gels first. We'll see.

If Krejci gets any playing time whatsoever and it's not a blowout win for the Czechs, they'll probably be on at the same time. I see Chara finally logging 30 mins or something.

And sadly, from what I've read, Norwegian starting goalie Lars Haugen has had to go home because of allergy problems due to the location/state of the building he's stayed in (several others who have stayed in the area have had the same problems). He helped Norway stay level with Russia in the quarter final of the WC two years ago going into the third period, and I would've liked a big game out of him and maybe a one-goal Norway lead going into the third today. Not sure how much worse their backup, Bruins-draftee Lars Volden, is - but they have similar stats in their clubs, though Haugen plays in the KHL and Volden in Liiga.

Looks like the Slovenes will face Sweden. Lots of them play or have played in Sweden (something like 10 out of 25, and that's despite Gasper Kopitar not making the team). Most of them in juniors or the second tier league, but still, the Slovenian team has probably spent more time in Sweden the last 5 years than the Swedes.

Zuccarello out for Norway. Hand injury.

Elias is out for the Czechs with the flu apparently.

HopeNorway makes it interesting unlike Austria who just rolled over.

Haugen is in, I must've been misled by a(n intentionally) poorly phrased articled in which it was stated that he's left Sochi. I guess he just went to stay in a neighbouring town. Zuccarello might be a bigger loss than Haugen would've been, though. Sucks for Norway and for him.

With environmental allergies sometimes all you need is to remove yourself from the environment. I'm sure he also took an IOC approved antihistamine to help relieve the symptoms.

Props to him fighting through it.

I'm not shocked to learn the Russian players don't get along. All about the individual players rather than the team.

It leaks quickly into the game too. Hockey to me is the ultimate team sport, proven when a team of superstars looks to be very vulnerable to an actual team.

Stay out of the box. :/
Not watching the game, just watching the shot count and other events.

I think Canada is experiencing something similar. No set lines and too much time being spent on Crosby.

Not that I think anyone expected 4-0 after the first, the shot differential (7-6) isn't staggering, and apparently Rosseli Olsen had a good scoring chance in the final minute of the period. If Russia don't up their game, their tournament could easily end here, or at least against Finland (who have looked stronger than I thought they would but whose D probably won't be as good as Norway's at keeping Russia out of scoring areas).
