Yet the third line scored three goals.

How many were 5 on 5? All I ask you is this. Ignore the score (I know that is all that really matters) and tell me who was the better team when our first line wasn't out there? The point is, we are not good enough right now. Obviously, we should only make moves that also help us in the future, but we do need help now.

Yet the third line scored three goals.

One, Umby and Nick scored on the PP, but it doesn't change the fact that we have one of the deepest line-ups in the league.
Umberger, Anisimov and Foligno combined for 43 goals this season. Cam, Dubi and Calvert combined for 35 goals (despite the fact that Calvert missed 26 games and Dubi 6 games). Find me a 2nd-3rd lines combo that produces better.
Speaking of "overpaid" Umberger. He's a top-90 player in goals in the NHL. If you do a simple math (30 teams - three 1st liners per team) that's a good reason to claim that he's good enough to be a top-6 forward on any NHL team.

Keep in mind you are comparing the CBJ to the best team in the league, playing at home, where they have the best home record in the league.

5v5 the score was 2-2. Our special teams were better than Anaheim's last night. I'm not sure what the problem is.

We don't have to beat the elite teams every night, just four times out of seven.

It isn't really my style to make proposals, but in light of the Canucks' potential re-tool I was thinking about a trade. I really like Jannik Hansen and believe he fits our mold well. He's got great speed and plays similarly to Matty Calvert. I think he'd look great between he and Cam. Was also thinking about Kevin Bieksa. Veteran RH shot with a little edge could be useful on our backend.

The Canucks are looking to get younger, so I think we'd be good trading partners. The deal I have been kicking around in my head revolves around Hansen+Bieksa and Anisimov+Savard. Now, Savard has looked really good this year, I know. But given the fact that he's younger than most of our D, I think he's who Vancouver would target. He'd be displaced by Bieksa, giving us a little different look. As for AA, I just don't think he is very effective here. He always leaves something to be desired. Hansen provides less offense, but I personally believe offense isn't an issue for us and that our bottom six needs and elite third or fourth liner, which Hansen is in my opinion.

Thoughts?

Here I thought the goal was to the best team in the league. I think some of you are confusing what I am saying. I have never said we have to make a trade. I am just saying I don't know how you could watch the Anaheim game and think we are just fine and don't need help. We need some help. For one, we need a defensive defenseman.

I guess I'm OK with us not winning the cup this year. I think we have the pieces in place that we can be a strong contender for it within the next few years as our players develop, and I'm a believer in the long-term plan.

We may not be the best (or top 5) this year, but are we on the path for that in the near future? I sure think so.

If Lupul is available, make sure he wants to be here first. Could be Carter part 2. When he was traded to Edmonton from Anaheim, it was a similar situation with Carter and Columbus. Although Lupul going to Edmonton might have been not wanting to play in hometown.

Absolutely wrong. He, at first, wanted to be there but he did wilt under the pressure of playing for his hometown team & his grandfather being one of the owners of the team. He was not a cancer in the room like Carter.

I am not in favor of a rent-a-player. Nor do I believe the Jackets should go down this road.

I think a move should be made to make eithe the PP or fourth line stronger. But, do it if a guy has 2 years left on his contract.

The 4th line is the one thing that doesn't need upgraded.

Just one opinion, but here goes.

While Jarmo has demonstrated that he is capable of surprises (see Gaborik) and in spite of the trumpeting of Portzline, I don't expect a big move at either of the deadlines. The team is playing well and trending towards the playoffs, there is good balance and chemistry working at the present and I don't see much reason to mess with it at this point. Barring some kind of a gifting by another GM, expect the FO to stand pat. Gaborik when he comes back functions much like a deadline rental.

That being said look for some serious movement after the season.

UFA's
Gaborik, DMac, Comeau, Nikitin, Skille, Bass

RFA's
Erixon, Goloubef, Prout, Savard, Weber, Tropp

Some serious decisions moving forward will need to be made.

There is lots of D potential/depth, the question is how much of it can you keep vs what kind of return could you get in turning it. If you assume the top four slots as set (JJ, Tyutin, Wiz, Murry) you get 6 bodies for 4 slots. And with Jarmo you might not be able to assume those top four. There will be changes on the blue line.

There seems to be an excess of depth on the lower end, again how much can you keep, who could you move and who can you just let go.

I think we will know a lot more about the FO's idea about brick by brick and how they view this team. There is some talent in the pipeline, how far off do they think it to be? Do they move some of the defensive depth for top end skill? How high do they shoot? Picks and prospects for a top end guy? Or do they move pieces to obtain more developing talent? D potential for forward potential or picks?

Who do they really view to be the "core"? How for off do they think they really are from a serious Cup challenge? This summer will answer a lot of these questions.

Next year's Blue Jackets will be different from this years Blue Jackets, of that you can be fairly certain.

Hearing Calgary is trying to sign Mike, but there is interest out of LA, Phoenix, New Jersey and Columbus. Not as much interest as some might be saying, but interest.

At this point in the process, I don't see JK or JD letting pieces leave without a return. ie. Niki6 and Gaborik are likely to be signed or moved I would think. Both are valuable enough assets to get some future building blocks. Niki6 has played very well this year but I do think he can be replaced, if the CBJ moved him, with minimal fall off or impact. I really want(ed) to see Gaborik play with this team but given how they have performed without him if he were moved I see little disruption to chemistry or on ice product. There certainly is more to be potentially gained with him playing though.

I really like this team but also know a chance to upgrade and continue to build the pipeline should happen if the opportunity presents itself. Especially if the impact/disruption can be minimal. I do not wish to see a high profile pending UFA come on board at this juncture. I don't see that as good asset management right now. I'm anxious to see where we go these last two months.

UFA's:
Maybe sign MacKenzie and Skille. Trade/don't sign Gaborik, Comeau, Bass. Trade Nikitin (sign him if you can't trade him)

RFA's:
Keep Erixon, Goloubef, and Prout. Maybe keep Tropp. Trade Savard. Sign Weber if you need him in Springfield.

One of the young D will go when Jarmo makes his deal. The question is will it be Erixon, Savard or Gobulef? I think Prout is safe (currently parked in Springfield). Possibly a pick and a 3/4th liner as part of the package (Commeau, or Boll top my list)?

This smells like a 3 for 1 deal coming. For Peron maybe?

Now, Perron is a guy that I would really get behind. A guy with obvious skill, he's been not only a strong forward for Edmonton, but has proven a quality guy in the locker room and really rejuvenated his career.

Maybe he's being too rough on the kids, so they're looking to deal him? If we could get him for a reasonable price, that could be an excellent move.

Damn SL, I just looked at his numbers. Didn't realize he was having that "monster" of a year. How much would a young guy like him cost now?

22 goals. Holy grail.

Perron would be interesting but he did miss several months with a concussion. Something to consider. However, he is someone JD/JK know very well.
