I see three tiers in the Metro:

Rangers
Penguins
Devils

Flyers
Jackets
Islanders

Capitals
Hurricanes

And the Atlantic is Bruins, Lightning, and the rest.

i always do a power rankings thing closer to the start of the season...still too much in flux right now.

Sounds good. Wasn't sure if it was around now or later in the summer. Enjoy be dating the middle of the east, since we know usually who is #1 and #2 although that opinion may be different this season.

Metro
Penguins
Rangers
Blue Jackets
Flyers
----------
Islanders
Devils
Capitals
Hurricanes

Atlantic
Bruins
Lightning
Canadiens
Red Wings
----------
Leafs
Panthers
Senators
Sabres

I think both NYR and CBJ finish ahead of the pens. Their D and goaltending are still awful. CBJ got better from playoff experience and adding Hartnell. NYR will be better with full year of MSL + healthy Nash, and Kreider, Stepan, McDonagh a year older/better.

1 NYR
2 CBJ
3 PIT

1 BOS
2 MON
3 TBL

WILDCARDS: PHI, DET

I see the Pens finishing first in the Metro and the Canes finishing last. I think you could make the argument for any of the 2-7 teams finishing in any order and you wouldn't be wrong. Here's my guess for the Metro...

Penguins
Rangers
Blue Jackets
Devils
Flyers

Islanders
Capitals
Hurricanes

And the Atlantic...

Bruins
Lightning
Canadiens

Red Wings
Maple Leafs
Senators
Panthers
Sabres

I'm gonna say the Metro sends 5 teams. Atlantic doesn't really impress me beyond the Bruins and the Lightning. Not to say the Metro is amazing either but I think there's a stronger group of teams there.

Penguins are regular season champs they'll likely finish first in the Metro. On paper we should finish 2nd again but you never know what can happen. After that it's pretty much a toss up. Could see any of the Flyers, Devils, Isles and Blue Jackets filling out the rest of the spots. Canes and Caps will be feasted on.

I'm feeling this:

Metro:
1) PIT/NYR
2) PIT/NYR
3) PHI

Atlantic:

1) Boston
2) TBL
3) MTL/FLA

WC1) NYI
WC2) CLB/FLA

Here is why I don't see any more teams getting anywhere:

New Jersey -- Let's take a look at this roster:
Forwards

JAROMIR JAGR R 6' 3" 230 FEB 15, 1972 42 KLADNO, CZE
PATRIK ELIAS "A" L 6' 1" 195 APR 13, 1976 38 TREBIC, CZE
DAINIUS ZUBRUS R 6' 5" 225 JUN 16, 1978 36 ELEKTRENAI, LTU
MICHAEL RYDER R 6' 1" 200 MAR 31, 1980 34 BONAVISTA, NL, CAN
MARTY HAVLAT R 6' 2" 210 APR 19, 1981 33 MLADA BOLESLAV, CZE
MIKE CAMMALLERI L 5' 9" 190 JUN 8, 1982 32 RICHMOND HILL, ON, CAN
RYANE CLOWE L 6' 3" 225 SEP 30, 1982 31 ST. JOHN'S, NL, CAN
TUOMO RUUTU R 6' 0" 205 FEB 16, 1983 31 VANTAA, FIN
STEPHEN GIONTA C 5' 7" 185 OCT 9, 1983 30 ROCHESTER, NY, USA

If I'm not mistaken, most of those players carried their offense... notice the bold? That is the AGE of these players... I can expect them to start off VERY good, but there will be a significant drop off towards the end of the season.

CAR - No major additions, just some retainees.... going nowhere, and fast

WSH - They MAY compete this year... but I fully expect them to flounder in the coming years thanks to those handcuffing contracts that they signed this offseason... Like stated before, The caps are depending on Trotz figuring out and working around Ovechkin, and management has all but tied it's hands on a retool after those horrendous contracts.

BUF - Still rebuilding

OTT - Still retooling

TOR - again, will probably compete for a wildcard, but will blow it

DET - I think this is the first year DET misses the playoffs, UNLESS

MTL - It's possible they fall off a cliff at the end of the year due to age as well.
