I'm saying does it have to be a rather serious injury?

I'm not sure exactly what would qualify. Obviously if he has a cut and it isn't stopping him from playing, that isn't going to stop a buyout. But anything that requires offseason surgery, even if he plays through it, probably will.

Look at Heatley. In the last 4 years, he missed 2 games. This year he had a season ending injury and the wild can't buy him out. Richards has had a concussion. He had the injury from the Kaleta hit which could have been much worse.

Richards isn't going to be the difference between us winning a cup next year or not. If we keep him and then can't buy him out next summer, everyone who said we should keep him for another year is going to be screaming bloody murder. Cut our losses now.

The irony being, of course, that you breaking something very expensive would be a direct response to a very expensive broken thing.

Swish.

Exactly. It has to fit the price tag of his contract

Thanks for clearing up the buy out business guys. We just have to hope nothing involviing surgery happens to Richards.

While it wouldn't be the worst thing to see if Richards can turn it around, the risk is just too high. If you ask me buy out now, buy out later, or ride it out, I'd go with buy out now.

Theoretically, if Richards' annoying caddy were to ask him if he was getting bought out, what else would you expect him to say?

I'd be shocked if that kid had the stones to legitimately ask Richards that. Even more so if Richards actually bothered to answer him while he was playing golf.

The only thing from Calgary that would interest me is Baertchi, and their 3 no. 1 picks, especially the number 6 overall. I know the Flames won't deal any of them, except maybe one of the picks.

I'm not against bringing Richards back with a different head coach, despite the injury risk. Hopefully, it gives him a jump start/new lease on life. I think he and Torts had to go their separate ways. He had to deal with Torts with Tampa Bay and here, and that may have been more than enough for him.

I'd try to trade Pyatt (too slow)/Powe (no offensive game)/Asham (too old). Signing Nystrom would be a good idea for 4th line. They need speed on the 4th line. I'd send MDZ + a mid level prospect for the no. 7 pick and one Edmonton's better prospects. And/or send Staal (add maybe a late pick or mid level prospect) to Carolina for the no. 5 pick (select high end skill forward) and one of their young defencemen Faulk or Murphy, maybe CAR add a little something extra, a pick or a mid level prospect.

Any "injury".

Samuelsson has a sore pectoral/shoulder which doesn't require surgery. The Wings are stuck with him.

Havlat had pelvic area surgery, no timetable for return. No way. He can be compliance buyout for #SJSharks.

Things got downright weird with Havlat once the calendar flipped to May. He left the first period of Game 1 against the Canucks after taking a pitchfork between the legs from Kevin Bieksa, but later said that wasn’t the reason he left. He sat out for the rest of the series with what we now know was a pulled groin.

In the practices leading up to the second round, Havlat skated off and on with the team, and eventually told the coaching staff he was ready to play in Game 3 vs. LA. Again, he didn’t make it past the first period, and put his team in a difficult position for the remainder of what was the most important game of the season to that point. The Sharks won on Logan Couture’s overtime game-winner, allowing them back into the series.

Havlat was seen walking from the locker room on his way out of HP Pavilion less than 10 minutes after Game 3, and in the coming days, lost his locker stall at the practice rink, moving to a temporary stall. Meanwhile, AHL call-ups Matt Pelech, Freddie Hamilton and Matt Tennyson all had regular locker stalls, which could be viewed as an indication that the team wasn’t happy with Havlat’s disappearing act. At Game 7 in Los Angeles, rather than sit with his fellow Sharks scratches in the press box, Havlat sat on the complete opposite side, away from everyone.

They are stuck with him for another year. Havlat has 2 years remaining.

Conflicting information here.

Richards told Brooks that he hasn't been told either way if he's getting bought out.

“I would love to be back but I haven’t been told anything,†Richards, who faces the possibility of becoming an amnesty buyout, told The Post in an email Monday. “That’s the truth.â€

While Heidi, who is BFF with Erik the caddy, tells me that Richards was "told by management" that he wouldn't be bought out.

@NYRUnlimited this was told to him by management

What to do when impeccable sources refute each other...

Brad Richards does not know his fate for next season.

“I would love to be back but I haven’t been told anything,” Richards, who faces the possibility of becoming an amnesty buyout, told The Post in an email Monday. “That’s the truth.”

There had been a report on Twitter that the 33-year-old center told his caddie during a Sunday round of golf with Mark Messier that he knew he would be back in New York next season.

“I probably said I would love to be back, but I have no clue,” Richards said. “Mark and I never talked about it.”

General manager Glen Sather told The Post on Wednesday that he has reached a decision on the issue but declined to reveal it, perhaps simply to maintain his options.

I'm on board with amnestying him since any injury serious or not would not allow us to buy him out. I was under the impression it had to be something serious. That is going to leave Sather with almost 21m of cap space :help:

I just don't see the point in keeping him for another season. Best case, you get a miraculous rebound year from him and are still pretty much forced to buy him out. Cap recapture makes him virtually untradeable unless you're dumb enough to think he's going to play until he's 40.

One year of good play doesn't outweigh the risks, IMO. If he gets hurt and we cannot amnesty him next year, this team is absolutely screwed.

I agree. Plus why keep him? Why not try and build for further than this season?

I think there are 3 major things Sather needs to do over this next few months. A top 6 LWer, a 3rd line center, and a top 4 right handed dman.

I wonder how legitimate that Phaneuf stuff is. Makes little sense for the Leafs to trade him, IMO. With one year left before he's a group III, you're basically dealing for one year of a guy who is going to get a massive contract next summer.

I know the Rangers loved him in 2003 and we've been linked to him before. Big shot and favors the right-side. Rut roh.

The only thing stopping me from a full endorsement of buying out Richards next week is the fear Sather will take that $6.67M and immediately do something stupid with it.

...and thats not a good enough reason

I think the debate is whether or not the Leafs truly view him as a #1 d-man. Phaneuf will in all likelihood be looking for a raise and if Toronto doesn't look at him as the type of guy to lead the backline, $7-8 million is alot to commit. I highly doubt he would look to take a paycut. If they don't have the belief that he can be The Man there, it would be in their best interest to deal him now before he walks. I wonder what the market would be for him around the league.

AV said he had nothing to do with any buyout for Richards. That's a management decision.

Sather waited until the last minute to compliance buyout Bobby Holik.

Maybe Sather is trying to trade Richards to Calgary. They offered him more money in 2011. The Rangers take a cap recapture penalty when Richards retires. They get him off of their cap until Richards retires. The cap might be $80M by 2017 when Richards retires. He is not retiring before 2017.

With the amount of players who will be amnestied, I would rather see a short contract given to someone like Briere or a trade for Cammalleri than see Richards again.

I have always thought that a trade was more likely than people around here gave it credit for. Not saying it is likely, just not impossible.

Could be. Calgary was one of the top bidders on Richards. NYR have paid the expensive part of his contract. Calgard has some guys NYR wants.

Richards for Cammalleri. The Rangers get a top-six goal scorer for one year, cap relief after that. Calgary gets a 1c whose name isn't Olli Jokinen. Win-win.

Rangers worked with Calgary in the Erixon deal.

If Richards costs NYR 3-4 years of cap hit way down the line, at a time when the cap is much higher, they'll cross that road when they come to it.
