2013 NHL Entry Draft part II - Round 2

Bettman being booed lustily at Prudential Center. Worst I've ever heard at a draft. Kovalchuk contract, lockout factors...and he's Bettman.

Buffalo, Philadelphia, and Columbus released some videos of their draft preparations. Apparently Florida has one forthcoming as well.

Columbus: http://video.bluejackets.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=231&id=263713&cmpid=embed-share-video

Haven't had a chance to watch the Columbus one yet, but some posters put some screenshots up. Seems like they were really down on Shinkaruk (had him in the mid 20s).

Some interesting shots of Buffalo's head scout during the draft. Seemed like they badly wanted Ristolainen at #8 and were targeting a forward at #16 but Zadorov was unexpectedly there.

Philadelphia's video was interesting to see how much fluctuation there might be on the eve of the draft. This perhaps also demonstrated how a GM might not have that much input as Paul Holmgren didn't come in until the end; It's a small pet peeve that GMs get far too much credit/blame for draft picks.

On draft day, I really didn't like San Jose trading #20 and #58 just to move up two spots for Mirco Mueller. Apparently in the Columbus video, they tried to move up to #14. And in the Buffalo video, they turn down a trade of #16 for #20+. Mueller ended up being #9 on Philadelphia's list, so perhaps he was in a similar spot on San Jose's. So maybe in the Sharks' eyes, they were trading #20 and #58 to secure a top 10 player.

Columbus video was pretty good, probably the most raw footage out of the videos so far. Interesting tidbits:

- Buffalo was potentially offering #16 and #38 to Columbus for #14. The Sabres pulled the offer after Phoenix took Max Domi at #12.

- San Jose made a pair of offers for #14. First one was #14 for #20, #49, and a future 3rd. Jarmo said something to the effect of "According to the value chart, we'd come out ahead.....barely." Sharks later had a revised offer of "#20 and two 2nds" for #14 and a 4th. In the end they decided to keep the pick.

- Somebody at the table asks "So we're picking Wennberg?" and Jarmo replies "If that's who you want." Ie, he was deferring the pick to the scouts and didn't have a strong preference otherwise.

- At #19, they were targeting Curtis Lazar, Kerby Rychel, and another unnamed forward to give them a gritty character forward. Not sure who the 3rd one would be. At first I would have assumed Ryan Hartman, but they have Hartman's ranking at #28 for a split second when they showed their chart.

- San Jose did finally manage to trade up (in the Buffalo video, they were shown turning down the Sharks offer). Jarmo basically does a fist pump when San Jose took defenseman Mirco Mueller. It was a strange bit of asset management by the Sharks since it seemed like Columbus had long declared that they were targeting forwards. Sharks must have been in love with Mueller and gave up a late 2nd to leapfrog Columbus.

- Columbus had Marko Dano at #20 on their list. They figured they could try to trade back and get him. At one point Jarmo wonders aloud "What about Buffalo at #38 and #52? #38 might be too far to drop."

He eventually calls "Craig" and offers #2 for two seconds. I have to assume that is Craig MacTavish and the Oilers had picks #37 and #56 but were turned down. Interesting to me in that Edmonton was allegedly Edmonton was heartbroken over missing out on Zach Fucale by a pick. Edmonton eventually spun #37 into five picks. Historically the team trading up usually does a lot better than the team trading down for extra picks. So for them, it might be interesting to track Fucale vs. those six picks (Marc-Olivier Roy, Bogdan Yakimov, Anton Slepyshev, Jackson Houck, Kyle Platzer, Aiden Muir).

Columbus eventually offers #27 for #38 and #52 if their guy (Dano) is gone. Dano making the Slovakian World Championship team as an 18 year old intrigued Jarmo greatly.

Framegrab from the video. Hard to say if this was their final list since they took Dillon Heatherington (#38) when William Carrier (#35) was still on board. But still interesting to see another team's placement on Santini. Still kinda eye opening how low they had Shinkaruk. Something bad must have happened during the interview process and/or combine workouts.
