Why don't we just bring back all our UFA forwards, and for the last spot remaining we'll just re sign Poni? What do you think?

Maybe we can hit the top 25 in goals scored next year?

no you haven't lol

His contract is irrelevant. His production is nonexistant and the things listed that he supposedly brings outside of points is delusion.

What about his contract is irrelevant? It's very relevant. I would not want him here for 5 million, or 4 or 3. At under 2 it is an easy answer.

Production is nonexistant? 35 points in 87 games = good third liner.

How is that not proving it? I am providing hard evidence. You guys are all just making claims without any factual evidence.

You would think that with your usename you would have a little more cerebral genesis.

so because he makes under $2 million it means we should sign him? he was OK last year, not so great in the playoffs, and terrible this past season. on a decline.

again, people want to improve but they want all the same guys next year. what will change then?

I dont need points to prove anything. I watch the games and Ponikarovsky is invisible in 90% of them.

you guys all cry about how we sucked last year but then you want to bring back the same guys. what do you think will change?

Don't you think that replacing Parise with Bobby Butler, replacing Sykora with D'ags/Sully, rolling 8 Dmen and having significant injuries to Marty, Kovy and Zubrus might have been responsible for the team sucking this year? Possibly?:shakehead

how can anyone even speculate about not wanting poni back? yeah lets let him walk- then lets say lou cant sign zubes and/or clarkson. whoops

I'm pretty sure his play over the last 30 games where he floated around like space junk is factual evidence. Either he didn't wanna be on the Devils in the first place, or he just plain sucks now.

He was outscored by like every forward on our team in that span not named Barch or Kostopoulos too. Even little Stevo Gio who some people want off the team was better.

How many times did he skate around like some old man in Rockefeller Center that was skating for the first time in 30 years? How many times did he miss the net point blank and fire wide, or high? How many times did you notice Ponikarovsky playing at all? When guys like Elias, or Zajac weren't producing at least you noticed them out there. This guy was up in outer space somewhere commanding the invisible Sputnik.

absolutely they were. but bringing back the same team is not going to get us anywhere.

I don't think anyone is gonna argue any of this.

Hopefully we look to the UFA market, even if it's just an amnesty buyout guy. If we don't make a move the team is likely going nowhere, Poni or no Poni. There's always Stefan Matteau. Personally I want him in the AHL for a year or two, but he literally could be of more use than Ponikarovsky.

The fact that the major discussion in regards to this team, at this point in the year, is about Alexei Ponikarovsky makes me sad.

Poni 12-13: 30 games 7 points
11-12: 33 games 19 points PLayoffs: 24 games 9 points

87 games as a Devil 35 points. Thats a quality third liner.

Considering Poni played 'above' the third line for most of this year the numbers ain't even that great.

@AnthonyStella88: @ToddCordell Chris Nilan said yesterday on MTL radio that Clarkson is signing in TO. "Done deal". Take it FWIW.

If over 5 million, I want a gif party. Also, im pretty sure this is tampering lol

I'm still waiting for our tampering compensation for Parise last year, that was another done deal before UFA :P

Excellent point. He was playing above that which isn't exactly a great place for him. He was producing his first 8 games back, and then he got like 3 points in the last 20 games.

If you really want a pony though we can always sign this one.

...and letting players walk when you don't have a solid replacement in mind is going to make things worse. If Lou is confident that Matteau can be a regular this year, and if he gets Zubrus and Clarkson resigned, then I'm fine with letting Poni walk. Otherwise, sign the guy to a reasonable (1yr, @ < $1.6 milion) contract and see if he can bounce back. A good GM runs a team based on careful planning and contingencies, not getting pissed at a player who slumped.

nothing as bad as signing back a useless guy to play on the third line consistently.

youre probably right. horton and stalberg are probably already packed for NJ. NJ is the new Massachusetts

so what youre saying is even if Poni is not that good, we should sign him because we may lose someone?

great logic.

he should be the last of all the priorities. Elias, Zubrus, Clarkson, Zids, HEnrique, Lokti, then maybe Poni

Or we could just sign someone like Stalberg as was already said?

When you finish 28th in the league in scoring then you kinda wanna... I don't wanna say blow it up, but you kinda wanna maybe purge some of the turds? Poni is one of the easiest turds to flush. If Kovy doesn't get injured I'm still not sure we crack the top 20 in scoring.

Poni was playing over Josefson late in the season despite Josefson being better. Because he was one of Deboer's entitlement program vets.

no youre right lets just bring back the same team...what could go wrong there?

nah youre right 1 guy= the whole team.

seriously if we sign him for 1.5 for one year and he only plays in 40 games, is that the worst thing in the world to you? ever hear of injuries? holy god

He won't play only 40 games though unless he is injured. He will be used more than players like Josefson just like he was late last year.

He's a Deboer favorite.

because its time to let guys like Josefson, Tedenby, etc. play CONSISTENTLY and get a chance. you cant keep taking guys in the first round and stringing them along.

you need to play them in the NHL consistently and see if they have what it takes. not keep signing aging, declining stop gaps.
