Ryan O'Reilly made the Avalanche straight after the draft and put up a great season. He was selected 33rd overall.

Sean Couturier made the Flyers straight from the draft and put up a great season too. He was selected much higher though.

Stranger things have happened.

More than anything else, I'd like to see him get a little more discipline in his game before he sets foot in the NHL.

He's going to wind up getting his ass handed to him very quickly if he doesn't clean up a bit.

I think if Fanye and Larsson progress half as much as I think they will we will have one of if not the best unit in the NHL.

Add Gelinas' offensive upside is through the roof. Do people want a mind-blowing stat ?
Gelinas leads the whole team in shots per game with 3.5.

A defence-man...

i found this funny, given your name

and seeing all this smoke...theres fire. i feel pretty confident that lou may start the season as is, but he'll make a move. one or 2 defensemen have to go

Only one, I'd say. Roll 7 NHL guys, Urbom ready for emergency call up.

Zidlicky and Harrold are both UFA's. Within 6 months, we're down to 4 NHL D-man with 2 Albany guys ready and possible signings and re-signings.

I think Zidlicky will re-sign unless Larsson has a huge year and Merrill, Urbom, and Gelinas are ready.

Highly unlikely. Devils need to get younger and faster on defense and on their roster. I expect the Devils to focus any spending on their forwards the next offseason or two.

Zidlicky is a solid PP guy but he is getting older and is not the most reliable from a defensive standpoint. He is also not likely to take huge paycut and the Devils already have Salvador, Tallinder, and Volch.

Didn't Arnott get a training camp invite by the Stars? Not sure why he'd even be an option.

3 year deal for Salvador... :shakehead

Promising news on Matteau, though. I could see him getting a few games on the 3rd or 4th line to start the season, the carrot on the stick so to speak, to bridge the gap until Henrique is healthy.

I'm cool with Matteau playing some games, but I'm not sure what we're gonna do about this roster space. With 8 defensemen including Harrold, we can only carry 13 forwards, and if Darche makes the team I'm not sure what we're gonna be able to work with.

Janssen has to be the odd man out, and rightfully so cause he's on a two way. I hope he never plays for this team again, because he's top 5 of the worst players in the league.

Kovy, Zajac, Butler, Zubrus, Elias,Clarkson, Josefson, Carter, Gionta, Bernier, Barch, Darche, Matteau/Tedenby. That's 13 right there to start with.

I can see Lou holding on to the 8 D-men till the trade deadline, then he can cash in on a massive over payment.

That's most of the season though (3/4 to be exact - 36 games), a little long to ride it out if you're hoping to trade one of the d-men for a forward that can help. And then if someone gets hurt you can't cash in anyway.

I can see him showcasing Tallinder, or whoever he has plans to trade, for the first 3 or 4 games before making a deal.

I'd rather it be done sooner rather than later, but whoever is being sent out is going to need to prove his value a little bit, I feel.

I know we'll all panic over Game 1 lineups, but that'll probably be the case if no move has been made as of yet.

Ya I agree Lou is going to hold most of his cards until the deadline before making any sort of big deal, if he even does. Always possible he makes some smaller deals along the way ala Poni, but unless he sees something easy and cheap, he will hold out. All that D he definitely has his ear to the street, but we will never know who is looking into until it is over.

To fully replicate goals lost from last season, ya we definitely need to bring someone in unless Tedy just explodes or something. Syk's and Poni's goals could be replaced by Butler, a better 4th line, and other guys like Kovy and JJ stepping up, maybe better production from the blueline as they begin to develop more. Who knows maybe we can roll a PP that isn't a complete joke, that would DEFINITELY help fill the void if we actually start scoring on the PP.

I think/hope we can make due, but we need to bring someone in to make up for what was lost with Zach. Just going to have to be patient on that front.

A good PP will help. Oates was a joke last year, and he waited way too long to make adjustments, and it cost us games with those shorthanded goals last year, and it cost us in the SCF. We need the PK to be good too. I would rather see different forwards on the PP, than on the PK this year. Not saying none can play both. Just wanna see a few changes that's all. I feel we can roll with guys like Bernier, Carter, and possibly Gio, and definitely Josefson on the PK.

Same with defensemen too. I don't understand why Zidlicky got so much PK time in the playoffs. Darche could be some relief on the PK too. That way we don't have to burn out Kovy, Patty, Zajac, etc by burning them out so much on both units.

Our PP was 14th in the league last year it was not bad. They need to limit the shorthanded goals though. But they did produce.

If even one of Butler, Darche, or Tedenby isn't able to cut it, then we are in a hole and are going to need to find somebody to fill that void and with our current situation, there isn't any body to go to

The more depth and options, the better

I agree with this, but it seems as if the Devils are willing to wait it out. I wouldn't be surprised to see Matteau get his 4 or 5 games in either if he plays well, could definitely help the Devils in the beginning depth-wise if he's playing well.

I initially thought Sykora would be in camp though. I can see bringing in another winger, but a center just adds to our strength and just takes away time from Josefson or Henrique eventually. The only center I'd be willing to add is someone like Dominic Moore, who eventually settles in as a 4C when everyone is healthy. Arnott will likely not move from the 3C position, thus forcing Josefson out of position or to the fourth line.

He's one of the top UFA's available in terms of his production last year..

I think Sykora is actually the first right now. He was second highest in production last year while Doan was still on the market before the lockout. If they won't bring back Sykie, they definitely won't bring back Arnie. Besides I thought he was invited to camp by the Stars?

Any chance in hell we deal for Weiss at center?

Contract year. I mean if JoJo doesn't live up to it, is trading for a center a real possibility considering Elias can be moved around)?
